Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for September 16, 2015
Transcript:
Toni: how'd cats get out of trees before there were firefighters? man: If they can get up, seems they could get down. Man: It's the angle of their claws. They gotta back down. Man: Set out some kibble. Fluffy'll come down eventually. Man: Point is, we don't rescue cats. We're here to serve people. Man: What if a person gets stuck trying to rescue their cat? Man: We rescue the person but leave the cat. Right, cap'n?

Is this one of those “meetings that could have been handled with an email”?Or are the Evans’ trying to erode my respect for firefighters? Because really, all it’s doing is making me lose respect for certain cartoonists.

This looks like a filler week. I might be concerned about the fire department’s policy on rescuing cats if I could remember seeing a cat in this strip, but I can’t.-(I see in Wikipedia that Luann used to have a cat named Cuddles but gave him away to Mrs. Horner due to her father’s allergies. But that was years ago.)-I’d rather see a week about Luann going to junior college and taking a course that relates to something she might major in. Or making friends in college whom she didn’t know before, and who have actual names (I don’t think “Mr. Jock” and “Mr. Goth” count as names). Or even revealing the name of the college that Luann attends.

Is this going somewhere in the next days? Can’t see the point for a meeting about cats don’t being rescued from trees

That is a lot of moaning about a free web comic.

I have a feeling this is leading somewhere interesting. Don’t hold your breath because it’s Luann-time, but hang in there.

Probably the most uplifting news story I read today was about firefighters who used the jaws of life to rescue a trapped kitten that had slipped between two boulders. After rescuing it, one of the firefighters decided to adopt it.

Just sayin’.

With the wildfires in California at present time, I would think they would be doing all they can to fight it.

Everybody knows that cats climb in trees just so they can look down and laugh at us while me make fools of ourselves trying to carry them down.

they won’t respond to cat in the tree, but they would respond to dog trapped in the well

Has anybody ever found a dead cat up a tree?

2Perhaps the reason why I am not finding this arc very appealing is that (like Methodology suggested) it reminds me too damn much of the plethora of meetings I have to attend….. filled with nonsense and wasting of time.

Why did the guy 3 people to our right of the captain turn white in today’s strip? He was black in the previous 2 strips.

When I was about 12, my six year old brother climbed a tree and got stuck. I was terrified of heights, but I went up that tree to get my baby brother down. Then I got panicked and my mom called the fire department. I was glued to that tree and the fire dept couldn’t get me to let go. My dad finally came home and persuaded me to loosen my grip and got me down!

Why are they sitting around talking about cats when half of California is burning?

Has “Pitts Community College” ever been stated within the strip itself, or is that just what people here call the college?

Cats have never needed help getting out of trees. We as humans fail to appreciate their abilities.

My dad was a fireman and I spent A LOT of time hanging around the firehouse over the years. Based on my experience, this meeting actually seems pretty realistic.

I’m with @activist1234 – they’re all big and bad now about leaving cats in a tree, but tomorrow they’ll be out rescuing someone’s cat out of said tree.
eelee over 9 years ago
Some people may not realize that cartoonists draw their strips weeks ahead of time. It’s a coincidence that this strip is appearing while wild fires are raging.
Complaints about this group of firefighters sitting around discussing cats up a tree should also realize that 99.99% of time they are out serving the community saving human lives and property at the risk of their own lives.
dre7861 over 9 years ago
This is very peculiar arc. Not sure how it fits into the main story lines. It really seems like a digression.

I’m picturing a leopard that has hauled some kill that weighs as much as he does up a tree. Someone call the Namibia Fire Department!

The captain doesn’t seem to realize how much some cats mean to some of the people he is eager to serve.

@EditmanEditman said, With the wildfires in California at present time, I would think they would be doing all they can to fight it. . . . .——————————Remember that these strips are created long before they come out. .No such fires then.

Ho-hum. . . . .What are your candidates for the dullest sequences ever found here? .For the sequences that were the most fun? ..For the sequences that were best done?.My candidate for the latter would be Knute and Crystal’s first date. Or perhaps Luann and Aaron in the library.
doverdan over 9 years ago
Responding to minor crises gives any such team a chance to get out of the station, and away from the numbing boredom that can create major morale problems — and a slackening of preparedness..It is not necessarily a waste to catch some fresh air. At least it can break up meetings like this.

Seminars can be good, but most meetings are not. Best advice: Get up, turn around, take a step or two, then talk to the wall. Your point will be made.

a well aimed fire stream will get a cat down quicker than you can say "wet cat ".

It’s still Greg’s strip. Karen may help tangentially, but she doesn’t cosign it.

Of all the arcs this is my least favorite… bunch of firefighters talking and joking about silly minutiae………what’s the point here? Are Brad and Toni gonna decide there are other more interesting ways to make a living?… not that fire fighting isn’t critically important… it is…but this part… no….

I could see a rescue parody, “Rescue 311”, with Wiliam Shatner (or some reasonable parody personality) recounting the “daring and perilous rescue exploits”… of what actually turns out to be of the “decidedly minor” kind, but “amped up” with a bit of that “dramatic flair”. (A la Freberg: [Dragon:] "A 412? What’s a 412? " [George:] “Overacting.”)

I appreciate a bit of what some call “lull”.. after all, roller coasters don’t thrill people, if they’re all ups…and I’m sure that even surfers wouldn’t go out, if there was nothing but 30 foot waters, and no way to swim into them…and I’m sure that people appreciate a low, flat surface to walk on, after climbing a large hill…..

I’d say that senior officer needs to sit down and let the citizens who pay for firefighters tell him what his duties are.
If we want them to rescue cats in tress they can **** well rescue cats in trees.
