Congratulations to whoever predicted this! Let’s see, who was that? (Looks back through archives.) Oh yeah, it was everybody in the world, 2 years ago. (I wonder where the other hundreds of engaged couples in Pitt will get married in the next year, since there’s absolutely no other suitable place?) Of course, they won’t get through the ceremony, because they’ll all be called out on an emergency, which will be the “respectful tribute” to the firefighters.

In real life, it would be full of real disgusted firefighters, because they will have made the day about themselves. And it’s so weird they’re putting it off for another year.

And hopefully someone keeps an eye on Dr. Smith. He might wander too far close to the sound and P.A…..

Technically, anyone can marry anyone, as long as when they get the licence at City Hall, they have the clerk – who IS licenced – say the whole “do you – I now pronouce”. No ceremony needed there, you are legally wed, and can relax and enjoy the celebration event.

I have officiated a wedding at a firehouse. Possibly the weirdest wedding I’ve been to, though the one at the ice rink competed.

I though they had decided that The Warehouse was going to be the venue.

Greg, DO NOT have a wacky wedding where theres a fire call in the middle of the ceremony and she has to fight the fire in her dress and the pastor does the vows on the truck on the way to the fire and shades of every sit com wedding I’ve ever seen. Do it right.

Saw this coming. Actually Millinnials, and Brad (Bwad) and Toni are definitely Millinnials, find weird places to get married.

I already see where this is going. They’ll have their nuptials interrupted by a fire alarm and they’ll race to the fire and one of them will end up trying to rescue someone and as they’re trying to leave a big beam that’s on fire will fall and block everyone’s view as one of them screams out the other’s name. To be continued…

A3 – A couple days ago I upset you by saying Mom should take computer classes— sorry. But that is advice I myself follow! First I check a book out of the library. Plan B is to ask a friend (actually, that’s plan A.) Plan C is to take a class offered at the library or the local job service office (both are free). Plan D is to register for and take a class at the local community college (usually about $30).

2I think that “wacky adventures” during the ceremony (like getting a fire call and Brad and Toni going out on a call in their wedding garb would be more fun and enjoyable than a traditional “HOOPLA” sort of wedding of pomp and gaudiness. I do not know what Greg has in mind…. but I have to HOPE that it is going to be interesting and not “HOOPLA”. I also feel reasonably confident that if Greg pursues the 9/11 date for the wedding comic… he will figure out a way to do it a) respectuflly, and b) hopefully with some humor (not about 9/11, but about the wedding).I would still rather see the wedding be small, and a bit more formal and a bit more subdued than it seems a FireHouse wedding would be, but that is just my opinion. I have a nephew who recently got married in a tuxedo with purposefully “highwater” pants (as did the groomsmen) and the bride had a traditional (but “highwater” dress) as did all the bridesmaids…. and they (all the wedding party) wore hightop converse “old school” gym shoes of an array of colors. The wedding was held in a wooded parking lot near the reception. They thought it was unique and interesting. To me, it seemed sad and gaudy.

@SueB, exactly! Firefighters lost so many of their “brothers” even if it wasn’t from that station, they are all considered family. And 2016 will be the 15th anniversary, so memorials will be more poignant. Terribly stupid idea.

A friend of mine’s birthday is on 9/11. They always celebrate now on either 9/10 or 9/12 as she says it just doesn’t feel right to be out celebrating on that day.

The fire station sounds both campy AND appropriate. They can both wear their yellow fire jackets (saves on the dress and tux rental) and the processional could include Brad sliding down the pole. The possibilities are endless, although I’m a little uncomfortable with weddings on 9/11, especially involving firefighters.

Otherwise, why not? My wife and I got married at center ice before a hockey game (red carpet to center ice, players skating out and forming an arch with their sticks, a post-vows lap around the ice on the back of the Zamboni with cans trailing). Got our pic in the local paper and the AP picked it up. 24 years later, we’re still together.

I’m not saying it can’t be treated with respect, but that doesn’t stop it from being used for “dramatic” effect either. For a while after 9/11 happened movies stopped filming buildings being bombed and falling, but eventually it went back to “business as usual.”

Just can’t get on the wedding “bandwagon”. To be truthful, I’ve enjoyed funeral luncheons better than most weddings that I’ve had to go to. Sounds morbid, and I’m not a member of the Addams Family, but it is true. Consider one the Gateway to Heaven, and the other one the Gateway to Hell. Take your pick.

I’m one of those who saw this coming (not that it required a crystal ball or anything); what surprises me is that it took so long for someone in the strip to think of it. Another big plus to having the wedding at the fire station is that the fire department’s chaplain can officiate, thereby saving Toni and Brad from having to find someone; I daresay they’ve probably already at least met him.

Will any character in this comic realize what a bad idea this is? At least half the commenters think it is a bad idea. Maybe Bernice will point it out, or Delta, or the Fire Captain, or any of the other firefighters.

They need a venue? Do we know anyone who, say, just bought a large building that they’re renovating as, oh, I don’t know, an art center/restaurant thing?

Of course, one year is Luann-O World is really about 7-8 years in earth time. Kinda like dog years, if you will. (I guess, even if you won’t…)

The date is important to them. I have a friend whose birthday is 9/11 and people have literally told her she shouldn’t celebrate her own bday on the actual day because of 9/11. Now I’m all for remembering and honoring, but I don’t think NOT celebrating your birthday or getting married on that day does that. Avoiding any kind of happiness on 9/11 is the wrong way to honor their memory.

Implausible…. I agree with you in what you said:“If someone you know has a party on 12/14, and invites you, then awesome! If someone you know has a party on 12/14 because of the Sandy Hook shootings and they remember that date fondly and want to celebrate it….um, what? This is what Brad and Toni are doing. They are celebrating that 9/11 happened because it changed their lives for the better. That is what’s wrong here. 9/11 is not the 4th of July, you don’t “celebrate” it. You don’t go up to a 9/11 widow and ask her to your celebration of 9/11, because it was a great day in your life.”And, I can also understand how it feels exactly as you state because of the way in which the 9/11 date was selected by Toni and Brad. However, I suspect that over the course of the next several weeks and months, Greg will clarify the situation more and it will be clearly stated that the wedding date was not chosen to be 9/11 because the tragedy happened. Instead 9/11 was chosen because they both met because 9/11 changed their paths in life.In some ways it still seems a bit “shaky” to me too as a date for them to select….. too many potential ways to see it negatively. But, I think in the end it will be presented in a considerate, appropriate way.

In many jurisdictions, couples can’t serve at the same station because of fears of preferential treatment even if neither is a supervisor so… who will have to transfer?

The very best way to “honor the heroes” of 9/11 would be to NOT hold the wedding on that day. A wedding is a celebration of the couple who are getting married. That would detract from the day of remembrance. Any way they try to spin it, this ceremony is about them, not about the firefighters who died. Shame on them.

Off duty firefighters do not have to answer a fire callout. Why would they have their wedding on a work day?

And to support your point, per his balloon in one and two, he did emphatically and specifically mention the day means something to him, and recognized that it’s a meaningful memory to him, the events of that day!

That’s a lot of trust and other valuable resources, mentally and emotionally, to have to invest in a person! It’s tough as it is, in trusting people, in general. To allow someone into our personal space, into our very core, it’s damaging, indeed, when someone violates that trust! .

Should one who has survived a near terminal disease be made to feel guilty whenever they choose to “celebrate living”, or proclaim to the world their own “personal survivor story”, even though tragically there have been others who didn’t survive?

Since people seem to like to make comparisons, here’s another. Should one who has been violated by another (whether victim or attacker was male or female), always be made to live in a shell, to never rehabilitate the ability to have relationships and trust again? – Do we not seek to do whatever we can to help that one to function in relationships as much as possible, and not be made to relive the tragic events (at least in the capacity of watching it over and over again, in the form of our “mental picture screen” in our memory and mind) over and over and over again? Do we not rejoice when finally that one can go on living, and not be made to feel guilty for not remembering the tragedy, the violation, over and over again?

The day will be about Brad’s feelings, about how inspired it made him become, about how now he wants to be a firefighter just like they were, and about how now with his bride beside him, 9/11 is absolutely the must wonderful day of his life! Party time! Drink, dance, and toss confetti! It almost looks like falling debris!

There are many cultures in the world that, instead of having only a mournful time in observing tragedy and dying, actually encourage celebration, and life.. even on a day of loss.

Or in arguing with someone who WANTS to believe that whatever Greg Evans does is correct, pretty much by definition. If Greg had let some other character (say, Jonah) suggest to Brad and Toni that they honor the heroes of 9/11 by getting married on that day, and Greg had let B&T tell him that was a terrible idea in completely bad taste, then 99.9% of the posters herein would have proclaimed that same opinion, and they would stress that it shows that Jonah is a clod, idiot, and probably an unfit parent for even thinking such a thing.

Most likely there will be an emergency before the vows and one of them will be hurt. Greg did it before.

So, so true!! – It’s funny how a person will take the time to “squeeze the fruit” in the produce section, try on a bunch of different shoes, insist a person bring in umpteen different references for a job interview, a place to live, or to go to school, or “pull up an app” to thoroughly search for a good price on something… but decide on someone meant to be entrusted with all that you and your nephew mentioned, just because “they look good”, or “they’re fun!”. Or just because they are financially compatible with the lifestyle one may seek. – But, admittedly, it is a powerful temptation to go with those things…
