So the Fourth Wall is suggesting that Love – and Truth – is specific to one person at one point of time. That is the clockwork of live theater. The Luann comic is like live theater.
“Love is a deeply human reality and of such complexity, that some give up all definitions, considering the words as useless and powerless. Love cannot be defined. It is as mysterious as life, hence the variety of the almost contradictory aspects of love. For the word “love” is the most fluid, the most complex, the vaguest and varied in meaning of all words.”
Those are the cutest dogs. That said, does Luann only have one class? I’m trying hard to stay interested in this comic, as I’ve read it since I was a kid, but it’s going so off kilter with its storylines and splitting everybody up.

Oh, PLEASE don’t let Luann slip back into her old habits and start getting weepy over Q-ball being gone.-She was revved up and ready to move on with her life last time we saw her, and now THIS???
Yes, Jay, each day Puzz would say something along the line of, “Here is my attempt to fill in for Jay. Hope we hear from you again soon, Jay.” They were the messages of a friend.
Very clever!I don’t think Lu is pining for Quill; she’s just answering the question in terms of girl-boy love experience she had. I do wish Greg had gone back to last week’s drama, but he changes gears over the weekend almost every time. I am also surprised we haven’t moved into the Spring Break trip to NYC.
Does Luann, who insofar as we know is not majoring in art, nevertheless take an art class every semester? If so, why? And why is it always with the same instructor and the same two classmates? I thought the reason for moving the strip from high school was to break out of the Fogarty rut by allowing Luann to interact with more people (as one would expect a college student to do), but apparently it was just so that the Fogarty classroom rut could be replaced with a Zebu classroom rut. It’s not clear that this revision is much of an upgrade.
Anyone seriously interested in the neurological aspects of love may want to read “A General Theory of Love,” by San Francisco psychiatrists Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini, and Richard Lannon. They include the devotion shown by dogs, among other things.
I can’t fathom why people are saying the New York Spring break trip isn’t going to happen! Patience people! Obviously it isn’t Spring Break time in Pitts yet!
In Luann time this appears to be only the second semester of college for her, given that she is still 18 per a recent strip and Spring Break is still to happen.
When they return from break what Spring art projects will they be assigned:Sidewalk art?Permitted graffiti on construction fences?Something botanical?Something like this?http://tingilinde.typepad.com/starstuff/2016/03/a-egg-zoetrope.html
On the topic of today’s strip itself, I am not surprised to see Luann still thinking about Quill with regard to the question of love. Just because she made the decision, and appears to be unwavering in her belief in the correctness of that decision, does not mean she is ‘over’ the pain of the loss of the relationship. When last we saw her, she was distracted by new developments and the anticipation of adventures to come, so she was not dwelling on Quill. However, when confronted with a question on love, it seems natural for her mind to still go to Quill at this point as the end is still fresh, especially since the main issue was not a lack of love, but rather different priorities.
Gunther has stubble and looks “hot” (according to Tiff)Piro has stubble and looks “avant garde”?Jock has stubble and looks “sweet”.*Well, guys, I guess you know what to do!
This arc is for me the ultimate disappointment..Leaving a half dozen interesting stories hanging, is IMO bad writing. But so typical recently. It’s actually what I expected..Not opening any promised new arc (like NY, or Les, or what Pru is doing, etc.) compounds it..Going to Zebo and these stereotyped critters is IMO pointless. They play no role in any plotline here, as far as I can see. Not even funny. Three kinds of love for three different breeds of dogs? Come on, now..Needless to say, art is NOT about love. Some famous art depicts hate, or fear, or tranquility, or respect, or other basic emotions..Moreover, showing Luann mooning about Quill in this way is totally inconsistent with how ex-boyfriends are typically envisioned by those gals who made the break..That Luann has no love for Puddles, her parents, her grandparents, her brother, her country, for anybody or anything (but perhaps the guy she dumped) is odd in the least. This is not our Luann. .Love, is, as they say, a Many Splendored Thing..This arc is for me totally incomprehensible. I had some hopes that Karen’s writing was improving. This is a serious relapse.
While I sympathize with those who hate, hate! multiple unfinished arcs, I see this as realistic and satisfyingly complex. I find this Bozo arc boring, and I hope it remains unfinished, unless this teacher has a fatal freeway accident.
Love? Don’t even go there. I subscribe to the song in South Pacific………….“who can explain it? Who can tell you why? Fools give us reasons, wise men never try.”
Remember that we haven;t seen Les since the characters were still in high school, and now they are nearing their second year of college. Maybe Les graduated sooner than Luann’s class (he does seem to be older), and he’s done more than 2, maybe nearly 3, years in the service already.
As I mentioned, though, we shall have to write our own backstory, since the whole thing seems to have been invented in haste just to fulfill the requirement of having Mr. Gray ask for something in February. It doesn’t really make any sense, because if Mr, Gray had actually wanted them to hire Les in February, there’s absolutely no reason he couldn’t have told them that last fall instead of making them (and us) wonder what the favor would be. Again it seems to come back to poor pacing of the story line.
Art instructor/self-anointed genius Zébo generates a humorous interlude with his pseudo-philosophizing. But it is the three students (I use the term loosely) who generate the joke itself. N’est-ce pas vrai?
What kind of college is this where they have the same professor for two classes in a row? Is this Luann’s major? Thought it was just an elective? And he does Art AND English?
I could not comment last night when this arc started, so let me comment just before this is about to turn over. I have just glanced through the comments so far, and I am not ready to guess where this is going. It’s interesting to see the goth type young man (if that is not goth, feel free to correct me, but I hope it’s clear what I mean) not having an ability picture love and it being a void. An abundant void. What could fill that black hole like thing up? Somebody mentioned Three Dog Night with the big dude and his three dogs, whom he loves, and most important, because it is her world we are in, is Luann who pictures Quill. I had to think about it, but I don’t think this means that Quill is coming back. I mean he might if he can get over his blindness, self-centeredness as much as Luann is working through hers (another theme here? but just because people in love break up does not mean they do not still think about the object of their affections that easily. That is part of the pain of breaking up, however it happened. That object has a piece of your heart in his or her hand, and that takes some time to recover from. With that in mind it makes sense that Luann, a real romantic, would still have Aussie boy in her head as being an example of love. Wonder who Gunther would have in his thought balloon if he was in the class? Questions marks (lol)?
It wouldn’t work as a Sunday strip, since (1) it makes reference to Luann’s dumping Quill (in the daily continuity), and (2) Sunday readers don’t know Luann’s classmates and thus wouldn’t understand their thought balloons. It may be a stand-alone “filler” strip, but it has to run on a weekday. I too had thought this week would be devoted to NYC trip preparations and departure.
When we do see Lu, Pru, and Bern leave for NYC, will we also see Quill leave for his fill-in role with the traveling dramatic production? Will we ever see him come back, or is the first performance slated for the Caldera Dinner Theater?
Many years later, on May 15 2021 the artsy guy, Nil, will invite Bernice (through Jack) on a date to his art show and it is titled The Unsaid. “It’s using Nothing to say something”. Wow- so he has always been into the void vibe. Ok!
