Yeah when did Mr. Gray meet her, we did not see anyone conversation with them all night except for the unknown joke. What really bothers me is that Tiff is into Les, as we can see in the last panel she is actually pleased to get his number! Tiff you have to be careful, slimy creatures don’t make good lovers.
Hmmm … if Tiffany is just play-acting and feigning interest in Les in order to promote Gunther’s growth and maturity, I think she’s taking it a bit too far.
Since we last saw Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger, Mrs. Berger has lost her apron and Mr. Gray has lost the handkerchief in his suit pocket. I am sure we all know that that means:
1.There was a mess to clean up and Mr. Gray volunteered his handkerchief and Mrs. Berger volunteered her apron.
2.Mr. Gray demonstrated that he could tie the stem of a maraschino cherry in his mouth and he showed Mrs. Berger a few similar things he could do with a handkerchief.
3.Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger realized that with Tiffany there to keep Gunther and Leslie from fighting, they could enjoy watching “America’s Got Talent” without interruption.
4.Mr. Gray had to go into the back and print up a business card for Leslie so he could hand it to Tiffany. Mr. Gray would love for Tiffany to be a part of the family, but he is smart enough to know that this will never happen with Gunther. It’s going to be Leslie.
5.Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger finished up the ice cream back in the kitchen wearing nothing but an apron and a handkerchief and ice cream dripped all over them, so they had to put the handkerchief and apron in the wash.
6.Mr. Gray used his handkerchief as a part of training for Leslie to hand Tiffany his card using two fingers and with a pinky finger extended telling him this is how they pick up girls in the mob.
7.Mr. Gray and Mrs. Berger were in a conference together to see if for the next dinner they could find some way to invite Tiffany and not invite Gunther.
@ROLLOTHEGROUCH: I think by now we should abandon the belief that Tiffany was just acting, in order to somehow promote growth in Gunther. He probably invited her so he would have someone to talk to at the dinner and ignore both Les and the man he considers his rival for his mother’s affection. Instead, since Gunther is not great at most social events and Tiffany is, she turned into the life of the party and he was even more alone…
Maybe Gunth should tell Tiff the next time she needs help with her schoolwork, she should call her new best friend Les, as he (Gunther) is too busy getting his own degree. In fact, he should use extra schoolwork as an excuse to beg off of the next dinner, or two——or twelve.Too bad Gunth didn’t know anything about Piro staying in her dorm room.I would have loved to have seen everyone’s reaction if he had casually dropped that into the conversation. Kind of, “You don’t have to try so hard Les. Tiff’s dorm room is open to everyone.”
I think it’s now a safe bet that Tiff and Les are going to be dating for a while – at least until and unless he does something very uncouth to offend her. In the mean time, I suppose she’ll probably have to pick him up in her car, on the assumption that he doesn’t currently have one.
I wonder if he’ll scheme to take financial advantage of her in some way?
So Tiffany can be taken in by some attention and some corny flattery. That’s actually kinda plausible. I don’t recall anyone ever saying anything nice to Tiff, much less flattering her and paying attention. Gunther’s never been that pleasant, that I recall. Imagine how she must feel right now.
Hey Gunth? THIS Your own durn fault. And Remember, YOU were the One that thought Tiffany wasn’t quite Good enough because She wasn’t “Smart” enough for You.
And You’ve got bigger problems. Not only is Tiff and Les going to be Making Goo-Goo Eyes at every dinner, but Every time You go to over to Tiff’s place for “Studying,” that Jackball Les, will probably BE there.
Time to cut Your Losses and move On and Quit being so Darned “Generous” with Your “Hot Dates.”
All things considered, it is a rare event in this comic strip when other characters listen to what Tiffany says, enjoy her company, and give her honest compliments. We know Gunther is about to make her evening a misery, but the last few strips have been very good to Tiffany. It’s so odd to see people be nice to her, it’s a little refreshing in many respects.
Okay, okay – I haven’t said it here, but I’ve tried hard to remain supportive of Gunther. After all, I wouldn’t want to spend an evening seated next to Les Knox. Nor would I want to spend the evening listening to Ma Berger’s inane yammering or Mr. Gray’s formality. But Gunther’s continual poutiness and surliness has worn thin.
It would be interesting if, on the drive home, Gunther went to put a move on Tiff. Gunther won’t do that? When Les tried to ask Rosa to the Valentine’s dance a few years ago, it resulted in the most passionate, explosive kiss this side of “Love, American Style”. Gunther seems to have the ability to talk to Tiffany like no one else has and has seen her fresh out of the shower without her makeup, so I think he has been closer to Tiffany than he was to Rosa. Now that Les is again in the picture honing in (or is that horning in) on Tiffany, he might just do something daring. This time, it just might stick. If we all remember, when Gunther was helping Tiffany study and got ready to leave, she tried to get him to stay, but he was focused on Iceberg Bernie.
I don’t think Tiffany is acting! Just because many of us see Les as a “shifty and shady” character, doesn’t mean that Tiffany will! Gunther also assumes Tiffany would see him as that…vut remember this is a girl “hungry for adoration and attention”. Sometimes she seeks it in negative ways, sometimes not so negative. Well, she’s now getting that attention. Whether she continues to seek it out ir not, she’s going to “eat it up”, while it’s being fed. And not just from Les. It’s from Ma Berger, and Mr. Gray.
When all of them were back in high school, Leslie was the one who had gotten Tiffany to play the part of the heroine in the movie “Eyez of Zeye” based on the video game he came up with. Go back about 3 or 4 years and check it out.
Thanks to the many who corrected me yesterday; Ming the Merciless did not come from Mars! RollotheGrouch, thanks for agreeing with me, Les is a con man. Someone yesterday also mentioned how, in the end, nobody was listening to anybody; everybody was in his or her own little world. // Last, and certainly least, Trilogy: A curious creature you are, “calling out” those who have issues with the strip, as in why are we here? // A little secret: This comic strip is one of many in which the comments are far more entertaining than the strip (Greg, I hope you’re reading this!). There’s also an element of nostalgia here; this is a strip that many, myself included, used to enjoy.
1) He was in an ‘unknown territory’, with a girl who likes him, on an exciting adventure, and even though it was out of his comfort zone, had the chance to pick up some skills, roughing it in a challenging environment, that could’ve brought him fulfillment…
2) Got homesick, hated his mother giving attention to someone (besides him), decided to return to his comfort zone, and is now unsatisfied with everything going on around him, and on top of that, now doesn’t have the girl anymore…
And Greg E just keeps heaping the frustration upon Gunther. If not careful Greg will turn him into one of those news accounts. You know the ones. Neighbor: “Gee! He was a real quiet guy. Kept to himself mostly. Don’t know why he went berserk.”
This entire storyline is making me angry, why does no one remember that the first time Tiff and Les had a scene together, he was sexually harassing her and only Ox made him back off? Now they’re acting like they just met for the first time.
GOOD! I love the arcs where Gunther and Tiffany are by themselves and talk. They both reveal so much and learn so much, and become more rounded characters. I just hope we have more than two more days of that!
Next Gunther has to hear Ma Berger scolding him: “Gunther, you were such a stick in the mud. Did you notice how that nice young man Leslie charmed Tiffany? Mr. Gray and I want you to make friends with Leslie – you could learn a thing or two.” This arc has been very interesting. Yes, Leslie is a big phony – on the other hand, Gunther is never going to get a pity date. Probably a new arc coming up – Gunther’s wishes will be stored in the cloud along with the stolen TV.
PREDICTION: Gunther will wind up with Tiffany, at least for a while. Why? Because Mrs. Berger obviously likes Tiffany and Gunther would never dream of going against anything his mother suggests. Whatever Tiffany might want is irrelevant to Gunther, especially if it is at odds with his mother’s plans to micro-manage his life.
Damn. From today’s comic it sure seems like Tiffany was NOT acting in order to try to help/assist Gunther. Furthermore, it also currently appears like Tiffany is considering Les and his “offer”. To me this is a disappointing turn of events. I had been hoping Tiffany’s efforts were all a ruse that would end in benefit for Gunther.
I guess I am also especially disappointed that Tiffany is not showing any visible signs of caution about Les, given that she should remember how unpleasant he had been during high school.
* * * *
What I guess I can hope for is that Greg, in his long range planning for this story arc is going to (somehow) end up with reasonably positive outcomes for Gunther and for Tiffany (and perhaps even for Les). What these may be at the moment is not something I can currently suggest any predictions about. However, with Greg’s very strong story-telling abilities, I will have to maintain faith that it will eventually all work out well.
He’s a “bad boy”… Tif and Bern seem to be into bad boys these days. Both are interested in Pyro, another bad boy… actually, a “dark and mysterious boy”.
Btw… did I miss something? Didn’t security have on video the person who was breaking into the common room machines and were closing in on them? Wasn’t Tif some how involved in all that? Did that story arc ever end?
Jimmy Durante always seemed WONDERFUL! If i think back to a personality from my childhood who i most wanted to meet, he leads the list. My Uncle Lou later reminded me of him.
Boy this arc certainly got a lot of comment on all of the characters, from the main characters, to the minor, but important ones, sort of like MidSummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. The main ones being the kids, Gunther, Tiffany, and Les, with the minor but important one being Gunther’s mom, and her beau, Mr. Gray. Mr. Gray actually was shown smiling a couple times. I will withhold any personal prediction about who is going to go out with, be romantically involved with, or grow or fail to grow up or not, for now. This arc has still two more days to go since this panel is a Thursday strip. But even though Les is proving to be very charming, and apparently attractive to Tiffany, likewise with Tiffany to Les, it remains to be seen what happens with that, and his not so savory back story still is out there. Gunther is still a sad sack, totally left on an existential fugue of confusion, while Tiffany had fun being the life of the party, thus receiving all this affirmation. Further I have to say in “closed session” (lol). Great arc for us Luannverse addicts.
Gunther will probably drive Tiff home. Gunther will probably also arrange for Toonces the cat to drive Les and Mr. Gray home, taking the Sea Cliff Drive route…
Tiff has no real interest in Les, she just enjoys the attention. Gunther is going to develop health problems if he stays this angry and resentful all the time. I would not want to be in a car with an angry driver. I hope he doesn’t get in a crash while driving Tiffany home.
What’s wrong with a simple, uncomplicated friendship? Someone to share problems with, without the burden of a mutually unwanted romance. I can see Sun, more sensitively drawn, tiny, probably majoring in nuclear engineering, as Gunther’s intellectual equal or even better. A cute couple, challenging each other in the classroom.
I think Tiffany enjoyed the dinner because she does not have a “family life” like this. She may have enjoyed it enough to try pursuing a relationship with Gunther.
@TUTTIBUGS: Tiffany had tried to get closer to Gunther a couple times when he was helping her with her class work, and he backed away. He is not the type of guy she generally goes for, as she usually prefers a more athletic and less intellectual type, but she did obviously feel something for him. Yet he backed away; he seems to want to be the one who makes any moves. So Tiffany will probably not try again, since she is no more happy about rejection than anyone else…
Tiffany in a social setting is naturally charming, witty and entertaining. She go on well with Gunther’s mom, Mr. Gray and Les, though he doesn’t count as all he sees is a conquest. Tiffany is too smart for him. I refuse to believe that Tiffany is so foolish as to see Les as a potential romance. Tiffany is working toward a future and Les has none. My theory is she is just lonely and liked the attention from a boy her age. I am hopeful that this dinner party will push Gunther to take Tiffany seriously and make his move. The perfect result of this is the two of them helping each other. Gunther helps Tiffany excel in school and she helps him to socialize comfortably with others.
I find it strange many commentators seem to think Tiffany is in constant acting mode. She only acts when she wants something – mostly to aggravate Luann. Her flirting is a part of her acting skills but yet is not acting because she does like guys…flirting to win their attention is simply an ego booster for her as much as enjoying male attention. In the strip, Tiffany is in flirtation mode but there is one factor missing….Luann. So she is not flirting to aggravate her nemesis…she is flirting because she likes Les. She is not acting. She does not want to help Gunther in any way. She simply accepted his invitation to get out of her doldrums, routines, whatsoever. It was never about being a friend to Gunther. Sitting at a table surrounded by people gives her the opportunity to be the center of attention which she adores.
I hope Rosa comes back from Perú. Don’t want Gunther going after his sister (Bernice) because it looks to me that Paris(tiffany) seems pleased with Less’ more attention. Looks like it is over for him with Tiff.
Gunther. Tiffany has already stated that she has something like 6 TV’s. Why don’t you and her get together in her room and just watch a late night movie?
Gunther is receiving Karma for his initial request. Before they got to the dinner, he told Tiffany to talk to Ma Berger and Mr. Gray and ignore Les. That was disrespectful to Tiffany as well as Les. He is not perceiving her as a human with her own mind. Gunth – you can’t program a girlfriend.

How about: “You must get lost in a crowd…cos you’re one in a million!”

Tiffany Farrell was triumphant last night in her appearance in Dinner at the Bergers! We can hardly wait for her follow-up appearances!
Gunther Berger also had a small part.

Perhaps Leslie would have done even better with Tiffany, if he performed “Don’t Forget My Number” by Milli Vanilli, just like they did, in this video:
