@BRDSHTT: We used to use dry yeast, though I understand spoiled buttermilk is also good. Somehow that package doesn’t look like either one. I suspect that any house that has a guest house in its yard must be hooked to central sewer…
There are two types of late teenagers-young adults; the moonlighters and the early risers. The vast majority of them are moonlighters. The early risers are atypical and often considered Personality A. Gunther is the early riser and Les is the moonlighter. Well, Gunther can have the run of the house while Les sleeps and Les can have the run of the house while Gunther sleeps. That works out, especially for two polar-opposite personality types.
@Chopped Fowl: Les obviously didn’t pay for any of this; otherwise, he wouldn’t have asked Gunther what it was, he would have known. And he’s already eating…
Help me out here, if Les is Animal House, then what would Gunther be? Many if you are far more poetic than I am so suggestions are encouraged and appreciated.
Get used to it, Gunther. Les considers any food you buy to be his and I imagine any protest will be met with “Hey, man, my uncle built this house and you’re only living here because he’s allowing it. You don’t like it, there’s the door.”
OK, I’m ready for this version of The Odd Couple to go away. IMO these are the 2 least interesting/important characters in the strip and it’s time to move on. And has anyone seen or heard from Delta since she was apparently kidnapped?
OK, we get the idea. (Actually, we got it months ago, when this totally unnecessary “guest house” living arrangement was first put forward, as a contrived plot device.) If Neil Simon were to read this jejune reboot of his insightful comedy The Odd Couple, he would weep. So can we henceforth just ignore these two annoying roommates and move on to something else, such as Luann’s choosing her classes for the upcoming semester? (Figure drawing, maybe?)
I remember Tiffany and Bernice were given a chance to be a sort of ‘Odd Couple’, when they first started at Moony. I guess compared to Ol’ Bernie, though, Gunther would at least seem a bit less uptight and buttoned up…. by strict exclusive comparison, of course…
Unless there is some interesting or shocking surprise in store for the remainder of this week’s arc…. I think that maybe Greg overestimated the comedic potential in the Gunther/Lester dynamic. After this long, it is starting to seem almost akin to a spinning record stuck in a groove…. several weeks worth of the same basic premise….. "slobby""quick acting" “Oscar Madison-ish” Lester contrasted with “prim” “careful” “Felix Ungerish” Gunther.
I am still hoping that this compare and contrast repetition is leading us to an awakening of sorts in Gunther that he damn well better start taking his circumstances and “making them his own” by making decisions that interest and excite him. But, I now am fearing that it really was a pipe dream on my part.
I still have a smidgen of hope that Greg is going to surprise us in the next few days, however.
Okay, Gunther. We’ve seen your anger driving Tiffany home after the dinner party. You’ve got the capacity – summon it up now. Don’t just internalize your anger at Les (via your usual sniveling and sulking). Set him straight. You’ve already let him take the larger bedroom and “divide” the refrigerator. Don’t just stand there while he helps himself to food you bought and dumps half of it on the floor. Set the boy straight.
And there you have it, the new “Odd Couple” (for those of you not old enough to remember, it was an old TV show about a slob and a neat freak living in the same apartment).
This “odd couple” arc is tedious and annoying. I can’t be certain how long ago it was written, or how much longer we must bear it, But if it was today and tomorrow, I would not be unhappy. In other words: it sucks.
After reading many of the comments, it seems many readers find these 2 guys could easily be removed from the comic. I would not miss the character’s, especially the whole thing about them living in the house in the back…….UGH!
This arc really sucks. Gunther was bad enough himself but adding Les the Mooch is too much. I wonder what it’s going to take for Gunther to grow a set and stand up to Les and put him in his place.
I know this is sexiest and I am the bleeding heart here, but these two blokes need FEMALES bad, very bad. I hope Greg and Karen have something resembling that in mind.
For all those who were accusing Gunther (yesterday) of pining for his mother’s care and feeding ( I didn’t quite see it that way), I find (throughout this arc) that it is Les, not Gunther, who requires the supervision and care of an adult. The one item he declared he was happy to do without is what he needs the most. I sure hope Gunther doesn’t waste too much energy on this chap who despite being legally an adult seems incapable of functioning on his own.
@SCHRODINGER’S DOG: The only time I ever though Gunther might be high functioning on the autism spectrum was when I saw the way he reacted when Rosa kissed him. He’s ok when he initiates something, but freezes if a female makes an overture. So I don’t agree with you on what this kid needs, because it takes a long time for him to decide to act, and the Rosa’s of the world don’t wait. If some woman walked into that guesthouse and started flirting with Gunther, he’s liable to just freak…
usually the first thing one reaches for after climbing out of bed is caffeine. but that’s for someone who knows he/she has things to do. thus, Les is just an adult sized 10 yr old kid.
Gunther should invite Les to wash lunch down with a sip from the Cask of Amontillado, in the basement, with a fresh batch of cement at the ready. Whoops, too heavy. Let’s just steal his porno comic book instead.
Greg – Karen: In regard to this arc, consider mercy killing. If this is a flight of fancy – abort it. If all else fails, try switching to greeting cards or PEZ dispensers.
In some ways I can sympathize with Leslie today (being retired and able to set what hours I choose; viz., stay up late and sleep late). But, essentially, Gunther is the more responsible character here. —If only he can be strong enough to influence Leslie, rather than the other way ’round….
This looks like it’s going to Saturday, folks. Les and Gunther are not a comedic gold mine – they are a comedic dumpster dive. Mercy. Have mercy, G & K.
