Oh my goodness. I don’t think I have ever seen something so marvelous and so spectacular in a daily comic strip! It’s magnificent! It’s amazing! It’s stupendous! It’s the great coloring in the 3rd panel! Congratulations, colorist!!
Panel 3: A little treat, the artwork is very nicely done. Panel 4: I must realize that Luann will always be a plain Jane. And, finally, Tara will come back with trouble.
Tara’s expression as she leaves – she’s kinda letting Luann & Jack amp up on the snuggling. On the other hand – Tara may have spotted someone that interests her.
I find Tara’s leaving very suspicious. If confronted about their VIP tickets (or lack thereof), Luann and Jack will undoubtedly freeze and blow the whole thing.
Our girl definitely has grown up hasn’t she? Jack notice? Love the drawing of the truck smashing through, with the red color people will miss in the paper, and of course Ms. Luann’s extremely stimulating (ed) reaction.
And now it’s time for all those negative people to notice how smart it is to sit far away from the action and to wear earplugs! Maybe not put the plugs in until the action starts though.
Am I the only one wondering why Jack didn’t make sure Luann knew to bring earplugs? Or just bring a set for her? Maybe Tara will bring some back from the concession stand with her (no idea whether they sell them, but they should!).
Know that hearing damage, like brain damage is permanent. That is why people at gun ranges ALWAYS wear hearing protection. Hearing aids do not restore normal hearing, you sign a form understanding that. ALWAYS wear hearing protection when around loud and/or prolonged noise (generators). Wish I knew then what I know now.
As stated by several others… the monster truck panel is colored quite artistically!
Not a huge amount of plot movement today, so not too much to speak of in that regard. So, what else do I notice?
1. I do enjoy the way that Greg has drawn Luann’s closed eyes in the last panel.
2. The similarity others see in the last panel to the old Maxell cassette tape commercial… I had the same thought when I first saw the image. It is indeed funny how some images (even as in this case, commercial images) become quite iconic.
As a rather noise-sensitive person, I do not think I would do well in an enclosed arena like this with all that noise. I am not even sure if 30+db earplugs would dampen enough of the noise for me to not quickly grow cranky from the noise.
I guess I will need to wait until they have electric vehicle “Monster Trucks” so there is no noise. :)
So how many times this week did they use the “monster trucks are REALLY LOUD” punchline? And yet there’s people here still acting like it’s a fresh joke, like a baby playing peek-a-boo who keeps being surprised every time the parent reappears.Still, at least it’s not as blatant and annoying as a few months back when the writers beat “Mrs Fogarty is a terrible therapist” completely into the ground. Plus this is an actual event that’s happening and being shown on-panel, which is a step up for this strip and its normal pattern of skipping past everything that could be remotely exciting for the characters.
@SweetSinger: Tomorrow’s arc: First frame – ambulance arrives to cart Luann off to hospital as blood pours from her swollen ears, but nobody can hear the siren. Second frame – Ambulance pulls onto field and is squashed by one of the trucks. Third frame – Tara returns with snacks and is annoyed because, from her perspective, Jack is ‘snuggling’ with Luann. Readers see that Jack is trying CPR…
Would someone please help me understand why Tara has often been described as “good-looking”, while Luann has been christened “plain Jane” over and over. It does’t make sense, especially with the way Luann looks in this picture, but perhaps someone has the answer. Thank you.
@montylc2001: It’s no stranger than the fact that a lot of guys like to watch wrestlemania, and can’t win at arm wrestling, or football, and can’t even run across their backyards, or the Kentucky Derby and can’t saddle a horse…
Now that Tara has exited, security will come by and kick them out. Tara is the type of person who instigates trouble, like doing something illegal, then does a quick vanishing act when authority arrives. God knows I grew up with a guy exactly like that and one of my sons “friends” did the same thing to him. Got him into a situation where he, very tall and wearing a very distinctive hat, attracted the law while said “friend” after police had arrived, snuck in and robbed the place. My son wouldn’t tell the cops anything until he finally used all the money he had saved to buy a car and hired the best lawyer in town. Who very quickly convinced him that telling the cops on someone who could ruin your life was not in fact snitching. He did, the trouble vanished and he was able to leave for Army Basic training on time, from which he finally retired as an E8 FSG late last year. 25 years Active duty.
We use to say that regarding guys like your son, “There he stands looking like a tiger with all those stripes.” Congratulations to the hero and the parents who taught him.

A few more horsepower and that truck will be able to achieve escape velocity. Then come crashing back, superheated, into their laps.

Kudos to Greg also. All the comments about Luann’s “torsal attributes” arise from his depiction that the sound blast doesn’t affect just her hair. :o)

In a comedy movie, Luann could playfully say to Jack, “I wanna #%*!” – knowing Jack can’t hear it.
