Yes, Bets. “Stomped, tattled and dumped” is exactly what the old Gunther would have done and apparently what the new Gunther wished he had done. Will Bets be able to turn this around or will old, angry Gunther come roaring back into life? Will Gunther reveal his true personality and drive away the best girlfriend he has ever had? The tension builds.
Well Gunth, how else SHOULD she put it? Cause that’s EXACTLY what you would have been doing. So, hurt Burn’s feelings and get Tiff in trouble—-would THAT have made you feel better?
And Gunth? If you have a problem about Tiff lying to you, then go take it up with Tiff. Remember how you confronted Luann? Like that!
Bets. You don’t get it. You should have stayed out of it. You were not invited to the party and did not have any business getting involved. Getting the video did not mean you got to to get involved just because you saw Tiffany in the video. If you hadn’t said anything, Bernice would never know about the party and Tiffany would be safe and spared from lying to Bernice about the party and her role, especially lying to her about not going to the party to spare her feelings. Listen to Gunther – he is not impressed.
But there’s a third option. Both of you, but especially you Gunther, could’a kept your mouth(s) shut and let people (aka Tiffany and her user / loser buddies) take and accept responsibility for their own decisions. No wait! Too simple.
Bets is loosing a lot of luster this week. So, not enabling Tiffany and her FrIENDs is infinitely worse? A little bit of understanding how Gunther feels would be nice about now.
I believe Gunther clings to his so called moral high ground because he has trouble dealing with complex social interaction. For example Gunther handled Tiffany’s lie very badly – he didn’t have to say why Tiffany wasn’t at the study ball. Good for Bets opening Gun’s eyes to see that sometimes telling the truth can do more damage than evading the truth. Next I would like to see Bets slyly prompt Gun to initiate physical contact – so far it looks like she has to make the moves each time. Gun – You have a girlfriend – reel her in !!
Moral dilemma indeed, as I have been saying all along. This panel is almost a logical tautology. In panel one the misgivings of Gun(ther) summarizing the real moral (ethical is relative, absolute, or post-modern—your truth, so lets stick with moral) problem, Tiffany’s selfish lies. Then the connecting panel two, Bets “so?” To which connector, “we aided and abetted.” Panel 3 is the conclusion which raises the moral question: does saving Tiffany from serious trouble, sparing Bernice’s feelings, and protecting the Hall A crowd, including Stefi and Kip, justify the proposition stated in panel 1? It’s not likely to be a fight, or personality/character issue, Bets will likely go along with what they decide, but Gunther has moral qualms, but if he gives in and tells, then all hell will break loose. Moral quandary time.
It’s funny how yesterday’s comments were all so negative about Bets and today’s comments are the exact opposite.
From the very start, Bets did nothing wrong. She quickly figured out that Bernice was going to kill the party and yell at Tiffany for bailing on the study ball. In warning Tiff, she saved Tiff from a scolding. Bernice was happy so Bets didn’t burst her bubble. No harm done.
But who put Bernice and Gunther in charge of Tiffany? I am not talking about Bernice’s job as RA but the insistence that Tiffany just be at Bernice’s study event. And her insistence that Bets must maintain a 6 foot distance in order to study. That was also not Bernice’s job.
Tiffany really could not be honest, since that would have busted everyone st the party. So, she chose to go to the party and had to deal with Gunther and Bernice.
Wait… Bets says (hypothetically) “[so] We should have stomped Bern’s feelings [?]” Does Bets really believe that Tiff was “protecting Bern’s feelings”? Somehow, I think not. What Bets was doing was getting her friend Tiff out of a jam (I have no objection there). The “protecting Bern’s feelings” was just a poor cover story that made no sense, knowing Tiff and Bern’s true relationship.
Since when did Bernice become such a sensitive snowflake that she needs to be invited to any event that Tiff gets invited to? She’s still Miss Gestapo-lite on one hand, but NewBern is also the needy, clingy type that will cry if anyone Tiff, Bets, Gunther, Dez, etc. do anything without her?
This is the conversation Gunther should have with Bets for pouring it on with her private joke on Bernice about the “true friend” and the “study ball being a ball”? Now, will this be the start of Bets disappearing from the strip as her role has run its course? It could be as the Evans may have run out of ideas other than her helping Tiffany stay in college.
Of course, Gunther didn’t do himself any favors when he agreed to lie for Tiffany and then when he yelled “Fire” instead of telling Bets and Bernice that Tiffany said she had some other matter to attend and couldn’t make the “study ball”. But, we wouldn’t be at this point now, but on some Shannon arc or other. Even moreso, will Gunther have that conversation with Tiffany who created this situation? After all, she was the one who set this whole arc into motion. She will probably continue to remain in this strip until the Ann Eiffel situation is resolved – found out to be a con artist or married to daddy Tom.This could last until she gets out of college – either by graduating, dropping out or being expelled.
As far as being friends with Tiffany and Bernice since 3rd grade, definitely not Tiffany. I think he meant knowing them since 3rd grade. He was looked down upon until high school when Luann and Bernice began to accept him as nice kid and not a geeky nerd. I know, he saved Luann’s dog and she went mini-golfing with him before high school, but her conversations about him with Bernice weren’t the “friends” kind. With Tiffany, friendship really didn’t happen until college time.
Like a light switch. Either you turn on the light or leave it off. Ya can’t have it both ways. Best ta just leave the lights off in this case. An just stumble on occasion in the dark.
Bets is right! She’s making a sarcastic remark to let sleeping dogs lie by staying out of it.
This proves to me that Bets is the smartest person in the strip so far; she probably is already working on her PhD and Gunther still wets the bed and throws tantrums.
Do you people realize that this is a comic strip, not reality? The characters in this strip will not act like real people but how the writer imagines. Therefore, all your speculations are meaningless.
Gunth is mad. He is finally figuring out his high-school friends lied to his face and smiled while doing it. Were they your friends Gunth, or were you just used.
Maybe it will be a good time for bets to break Gunth of his super-honest super-earnest (and super judgmental) mold.
I get why he’s mad, he didn’t want to be put into that spot by Tiff or Bernice, but he was in that spot because of his own doing. All he had to do was “not care”
Tiff is an adult (however young, she’s over 18) and can make her own choices.AS for Bernice, given she was giving you heck over proximity with the GF, not sure why he’s too worried about it. What happens between them is between them.
If I didn’t know better, I’d almost wager he’s upset because he failed at diverting Bernice for Tiffany, and Bets came through with the last second warning.
Bets’s answer is good and ironic. By lying they saved everyone, but for Gunther lying can only be a bad thing. I’m glad they are talking about this. Maybe now they will going to the Blackout Party to meet Tiffany and talk to her?
I have been mildly criticized at displaying dislike of Bets nickname for Gunther. It has nothing to do with firearms, per se.
I promised Dog I’d stop indicating my displeasure with the nickname when Bets stops using it. I could be cajoled out of it if Bets’ nickname referred to some, as yet undisclosed, physical attribute. Perhaps she refers to some performance capability not as yet displayed in any strip panel. That being the case, perhaps “Gunny,” as in gunnery sergeant, would be more to my liking and at the same time more coquettish.
I suppose I should be content that she doesn’t call him “short fuse” or some other demeaning epitaph. Perhaps the sobriquet “Gun” was the impetus for Luann’s curiosity re the couple’s nocturnal activities.
But I contend that Bets’ treatment of Gunther around others, as shown so far, has only been demeaning and overly possessive. Except of course that she calls him “Gun” (ugh!).
Guns, you are THIS close to blowing it. AGAIN. To repeat, it is neither Bernice’s business nor yours if Tiffany wants to party instead of study. Don’t risk losing the second-hottest woman in the strip over something that’s not your concern…
Bets seems to think that not having one’s feeling hurt is 1st priority even at the expense of knowing the truth. I doubt anyone would want that. Gunth might give that some thought. He won’t explode but hopefully some serious discussion is order… or is this just another item that he sweeps under the rug for the sake of preserving the relationship.
I don’t get the hate Bets gets here. She is fun, has been a good addition to the strip and works well with Gunther. He needs to unwind a little before he becomes a stick-in-the-mud like Bernice. And speaking of which, I wish Bernice would unwind a little, too. I understand she’s doing her job as RA but I would like to see more of her outside of that role (or as a wannabe psychologist).
I agree with Bets today. First time for that, I think. Bernice does NOT need to know what everyone is doing. Tiffany is allowed to go to a party. Gunther should have never been involved in any of this.
Okay, this is what I was worried about coming into this week. Gunther getting all holier-than-thou over a situation that was entirely his fault.
I mean think about it. If he hadn’t poked his head out of the room for no reason at the worst possible time, none of this would have happened. But that’s not really his fault, oh no. The trouble came when instead of just telling Bern that Tiff wasn’t coming, (or, you know, just not mentioning her at all) he instead agreed to lie for her.
Then, since Gunther is a terrible liar, he actually ended up alerting Bernice to the fact that there was a party going on. It was only then did Bets step in, because you know, Tiffany is her friend and most friends don’t sit by whilst the others get in trouble. Literally, all she did was clean up the mess Gunther made and dragged her into.So for him to give her that look in the last panel is completely hypocritical. You know that saying “you point at me, there’ four fingers pointing back at you?” It applies here. If Bets is in the wrong so is he and even more so. The only difference is that Bets isn’t guilt wracked over the whole matter, and she shouldn’t be.
Honestly this whole scenario isn’t that big of a deal, and trust me, It will be forgotten by most, if not all of the characters in the Luann-verse real soon.
PS: I know Tiff is really the cause of all this but Gunther is responsible for both Bets and Bernice’s involvement. All he had to do was stay out of it. Tiff’s a grown adult if she wants to make bad decisions let her, just keep your nose clean.
Politics free zone! If I want to read hurled insults, I’d go look at Facebook. We can at least do a tiny bit of compartmentalizing here, can’t we? This is a “rest area” from the crap outside the window. Or, at least I thought it was.
Do you realize Tiffany has been “trying to study” since February 22. This silly black-out party was first mentioned on February 26. I like most of the arcs and find them interesting. I may be all by myself, but I haven’t found this arc to be interesting at all, and it’s been going on over a month. Today is only Tuesday.
Gunther has many qualities of an Introvert. 1. Do not like large crowds, 2. Slow to warm up to people, 3. List of friends is small, 4. Can be found at home, (usually), 5. Interacting with people can be exhausting, 6. Hate confrontation, 7. Are fiercely loyal to loved ones. They need to be listened to, given time to reflect, not interrupted, have privacy respected and not forced into being an extrovert. I think unless Bets has a good heart to heart with Gunther, their relationship will have more problems.
Tough ethical dilemma. They happen sometime. It’s done now, Gunther. If I were him, I’d tell Tiff off and say I’d never lie for her again under similar circumstances, so if she’s busted she’s busted. But he’ll probably spill to Bernice because he can’t keep his feelings under control.
Why are these people acting like Tiffany has to justify herself to Bernice at all anyway? “So she could party instead of study”? Hate to burst your bubble Gunther, but Tiff doesn’t answer to you guys and can party all she wants. The problem here is that Bernice is not their boss so there’s no reason to lie to her in the first place. “I don’t want to do your Study Ball, and my whereabouts are none of your business.” See how easy that is? This middle-school mindset is for the birds.
And to those arguing whether Bets, Gunther or Tiffany is more to blame for all this, I offer an alternative: the fault here is with Bernice. None of the lying would’ve happened if the Dormenführer didn’t have that huge stick up her butt.
Problem with white lies to protect people’s feelings and such often lead to big issues if and when the truth comes out. Bernice will feel worse if she finds out about the party and then realizes everyone was lying to her. Guess we have to wait and see, maybe she will never find out that all her “friends” lie to her and it also brings up the subject what do they really think of her. Obviously they resent her being an RA.
There are all kinds of opinions e expressed here as it should be, and we should respectfully, and in fun argue over them, but the political opinions are totally uncalled for and jarring. There are plenty of opportunities to vent politically, this should not be one of them.
Good grief, Gunny! Stop with the Guilt Trip. Bets is better at this. No real harm was done and you need not feel “to blame” for anything! You’re okay, boy!

Bets.
Now here’s a young woman who barely a year ago, stated how much she disliked “liars and cheaters,” when in reality, she’s a bit of a “liar” herself.
And if Gunny feels so strongly, there’s still time for him to “rat out” the party.
Or better still, Bets should take him by the hand and drag him TO the party. H3LL, he might even “enjoy” himself.

I think unless Bets has a good heart to heart with Gunther, their relationship will have more problems.

Oh boy. Gunth is going to be the coworker that rats everyone out. There’s a time for ethics and a time to have a bit of fun. Haha!

Still can’t figure that stuff out on your own, eh Gunth?

Okay.
Please see BJShipley’s comment about Bernice, above. He is 100% RIGHT about her and about this being all HER “fault.”
“Why?” Because Bernice is over-zealous about her “job.” Has been from the day she got it.

What’s WORSE is Dorm Director Lopez recognized this early on, yet did NOTHING………,

Now, Bets get back to your dorm room and pack for spring break, while in Miami Gunth is taking you to the HauloverSandbar boat rafting party.
