This sounds like Bernice is becoming a permanent resident of the Degroots household. Maybe Luann will move out to an apartment.

Nancy Degroot is reading a book on JFK?

The options being read off was Luann’s weak attempt to make her parents think they had a choice of “gourmet” dinners so they’d think she’s helping out. When in reality Luann had NO intent on making them, she already had a pizza in the oven. Frank and Nancy just didn’t want to say anything

Bernice is neither playful nor mischievous around this family, at least not lately. Utterly humorless. I’ve no doubt she’s attempting to make the grossest sounding item on the menu. The other items sound tasty, though.

What’s with all these cooking gags? First Luann tried to make E-Z beef stew with a million ingredients. Then there was (I hate to cook) Bets with E-Z vegetable soup, and now Luann and Stepford-Bernice offering to cook any of a half-dozen advanced cooking meals, not tp mention Bernice breakfast of pancakes? Do all the girls in this strip now have to prove that they can cook to be allowed to continue? Or is the joke that none of these young women know any more about cooking then Frank does. which is to say nothing? And why is this even funny since Frank and Luann agree to cook supper because Nancy was working. Clearly by now they’ve learned how to make something without burning down the house? It’s just stupid, stupid, stupid, and demeaning to Luann and Bernice.

Earlier in the afternoon, Luann and Bernice were at the local aquarium.

“Mom, Dad – tonight you guys are each having a live squid, fight it to the death and eat it. Along with steamed rice.”

Bernice and I are having pizza…

What a forced gag, though. Luann researched recipes and put them on paper. Then she put a frozen pizza in the oven. Then she told them about the recipes, anticipating their apathetic snide reaction (not hard to do, actually, they’re easy to predict). All this. For this gag, for three people’s lack of amusement. And mine, too!

I’m still trying to figure out why everything else gets a sauce or starch, but the pork chops get a dessert. And one that can burn down the kitchen, at that.

At least they pretend to try to do something good for them to please them ♡. It’s funny and sweet to see Luann and Bernice team up in this farce ♡♡.By the way, homemade pizzas are way better than frozen ones and really easy to make. You just have to prepare the dough a few hours before to let it rise.

My mother only taught my sisters how to cook. I learned how in the Boy Scouts, so what I make is basic campfire cooking. I also learned to eat what I cooked, as that was all the food that was packed in.

Steak and sauce is pretty easy. Fish and fried rice is easy, but I’d worry about Luann frying.

    Wow.

Bernice and Luann are getting along like imaginary sisters, and deluding Ma and Pa DeGroot over dinner choices.

And (GASP) Bernice is actually lying in the last panel and is in GRAVE danger of having a bit of “fun.” Saints Preserve Us!

It just goes to show. That as long you remove a ‘Guy’ from the equation, (Zane, Piro, Brother Ben, or Mr. Jack) Bernice actually becomes semi-bearable. ;)

Bernice’s moving in with the DeGroot’s has been a rather harmonious cohabitation from the start; including with Frank and Nancy. Bernice is being presented more as a member of the family. As if she has been adopted!?

Her living with the DeGroot’s has encroached even into Sunday strip appearances. Since she’s moved in the Sunday strips have alternated among: Luann with Frank and/or Nancy; Brad and Toni: Luann with Bernice alone; or Luann and Bernice with Frank and Nancy.

How long will this relationship continue and is there some larger schema in it?

Funny! I wonder what the excuses would have been for each of the four selections, had Nancy and Frank chosen one? Loved Bernice’s remark about shelling the scallops. I never saw them with shells! ;-)))

I was in high school in my home country. Our Civics teacher came in and calmly said, “John F. Kennedy has been killed.” The reactions of my classmates was that probably the teacher made a mistake; maybe it was his brother Robert.

Later, our Language teacher came in and, with a voice that she was terrorized said the same thing. This time the reaction of my classmates was different; they believed that JFK had been killed; there was concern.

Those rascally but adorable kids are playing a trick on the parents. The kind of trick that a 5-year old thinks is funny.

Stick-in-the-mud parents refuse to go along. Boooo humorless parents; five-year-olds love it when their parents join in pretending.

I was in 5th Grade in November 1963. When we heard the news, one of the kids, in all seriousness, said “Khrushchev’s first move”. That actually made it scarier (I don’t remember much about the Cuban Missile Crisis, but I certainly remember my parents being very worried).
