The lights will come on, the last four years of the strip will disappear, and Luann will be sitting on the couch in the prop room with Quilly and all their clothes will be disheveled.
.
Oh, yeah – and while we are on that theme, J.R. will find Bobby in the shower. Very much alive…
Shannon found the candlles and did not set them on fire, did not set herself on fire, did not set Luann on fire. Such a good little angel. Though I’m sensing a pattern here — a week of Shannon not destroying stuff. When Shannon is being a good girl how does hilarity ensure? Also yesterday Shannon only came up to Luann’s waist, fixing her age as around three, Today she’s nearly a head taller, setting her age around 6. I wish Greg could be ore consistent about Shannon’s size and age. And I hope this week’s adventure will be something more than Shannon-doesn’t-do-it.
well while I rarely say negative things about this little girl (mainly because if the can channel all that energy, she’s going to grow up to be awesome)…I don’t think she’s quite ready to know where the candles are.
So Shannon seems to be at Luann’s almost as often as she is at her aunt and uncle’s considering she knows where the candles are. Ask her to find things they seem to be missing.
A lot of people are unaware how infrequently power outages are nowadays. Growing up in rural Australia I remember a lot of power outages! We use our phones now as a substitute flashlight.
Risking wrath once again, I still feel G&K – if they don’t “owe” us – should at least be considerate of us and explain how and why Jonah appears to have been deleted from the strip.
I am particularly frustrated that, apparently, Shannon is never depicted as with her father.
Hey! I have my hand crank radios with flashlights!
Clutter between storms.
Must haves when the power goes out.
Anyone remember the old Eton radios, with sound from analog TV channels 2 – 13? Yeah, I still have a couple of those. Too bad TV’s all digital now. AM/FM still works on them, though.
Sweet little Shannon ♡♡♡. She’s right, those are candles♡. Brad’s firefighter training will surely help them in this situation. But where are Nancy and Bernice? Stay tuned for tomorrow episode! Nice work with shadows and light sources.
After a number of blackouts here in the country, we bought a 20 kw propane fueled generator. Power goes off, genny self start, back on the grid, genny shuts down. Best. Investment. Ever.
Ice storms and accidents cut off power to my house at least twice a year. I have back up heating and power units. Strange G&K don’t know about flashlights and LED lamps.
I remember trying to fix a flat tire once at home. My young one, about 4 to 5 at the time, came to me then with a bicycle pump and asked, “Will this help?!”
I said, ‘No, Sweetie! But thank you!!’
Of course, it wouldn’t have worked, but her gesture was open, sincere, and SO Sweet !! … (That’s my girl!!) … :)
I think the more important question is, “where are the matches?” With the decline in smoking, and restaurants not giving out free matchbooks, I haven’t seen them anywhere. Do have a lighter for the grill, but many don’t need that. Shannon was trying to be helpful, that’s nice. ;-)
Well the story is in the dark at the moment, but I think a clue will be more evident tomorrow, Wednesday. Until I will wait to predict, but I will say this, Shannon is a cute, somewhat hyperactive, and smart child, not a brat. A brat just means such a child that aggravates a non-understanding adult.
Well, they did ask for candles. As much as I usually dislike Shannon, she’s doing her best here. Hopefully this arc is a start to a rehabilitation for her character. We see now that she’s useful for more than just “oops, I broke something” punchlines that never receive any follow-up.
If you live in a hispanic area, the grocery has big 9" saints candles, the best in power outages. They go on for ages and are in thick glass, won’t tip over.
They do, but they need the light from their cell phone to find out where they’ve been stashed and where to find the batteries. We have a couple of sets of battery operated candles that we can switch on in an emergency, plus we bought a bright battery operated lantern which is in a cubby where we can easily find it.
I had a job which often required me to sit in the dark quite a bit, to avoid running down the battery of the school bus I was working as a backup on. I got one of those $1 solar lights and removed it from the bottom reflector. The light it gave was bright enough to read the newspaper by. (Then I went to a Nook my wife bought, then another tablet, then a Chromebook.) Don’t do it anymore, but would use my ZTE phone nowadays (so the Chinese government could read along).
We had an outage for over one day a while back. My in-laws went to the store to buy a hand-crank radio, so they could keep informed. Hand crank.. let that sink in… never mind battery powered… or the fact that they could, oh I don’t know, umm… GET IN THEIR CAR for a little while and have heat and radio…
Candle in glass bowl. Heat other end, stick to glass. Light candle. Pour in a little cooking oil, stopping below the wick. I think the oil would work as fuel.
Yes, yes, I know, fire hazard. Put the bowl in a glass plate and spray down the table with water. Satisfied? No?
Better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.
Around the house, we have several LED lights – a few of them are hand crank types where if you crank them for about 30 seconds, they will give about 15 minutes of usable light. All the flashlights are LED type except one huge 5 “D” cell Mag light. Something we found a few months ago was a small battery operated Edison style LED lamp in a small stone block. It runs on 3 “AAA” batteries, and it will run for about 75 to 80 hours on one set of batteries. The lamp is about 7 inches tall, has a stone base, and a regular light bulb type screw – in socket in the stone base. The real glass bulb looks like a standard clear LED bulb with a slight tannish tint to the glass and has four LED “rods” inside. While not as bright as a standard 120 volt light, it does put out enough light in a 360 degree pattern to softly light a fair sized room. After trying one out, I went back and bought several more of them – at about $6 apiece, it is a pretty nice little lamp, even if it was made by i – Zoom. If you wish to see what it looks like, here is a link:
Living in California (Sacramento), we do not lose power as often as some that live in other areas that are subject to PG&E shutdowns. I think we lost power maybe twice last year, and it was down for less than an hour each time. We did lose power yesterday morning in our neighborhood as someone hit a pole that feeds the area, but it was not out for a long time. I have a generator set for that, if necessary, in addition to about 20 large deep cycle batteries where I can run on inverter power If I need to.
??? What? So… Luann went on a camping trip last year way out in the woods, far, far from civilization. Didn’t the girls have a camping lantern? Or were they planning on using the car headlights as a light source?
As for candles… no… in this day and age, why would anyone light candles (with all the possible fire hazards) when the power fails? It’s not the 18th century! It costs ONE DOLLAR to go to the dollar store and get a 2-pack of those battery-operated tea lights. Put one in each bathroom and let them run all night. Those little CR-2032 coin batteries can run those tea lights for hours, possibly days. They’re cute, they look like candles, but much safer, they’re cheap and they last.
first time commenting, and probably a little late, but am I the only one that feels a little concerned that a child that young knows where the candles are located and not the adults

Now that the lights are out, it’s slowly going to dawn this crew how much they depend on things run by electricity.
And then when the lights are back on, they’ll cuss when they get monthly electric bill. ;)
Perhaps We’ll seque way to other characters in the VAST Luanniverse to see how they are handling the blackout.
And PLEASE, Gaw. Don’t depict the lads at the Gulag predictably fumbling around in the dark like Buffoons while frantically looking for that cat.
