Interesting dialog here. Bets says this competition isn’t about money. Gunther asks then what is it about. Bets looks off into the distance and Gunther says “bets”. Is bets the answer? Does this mean that Bets can’t refuse a gamble? And is Tiffany doing something in the distance that might overshadow the cosplay?
Bets may be at the threshold of an “Ah Ha!” moment. Will she finally confront herself on her need for fame and recognition? Will Gunther like what he hears?
A more appropriate question for Greg since he has been beating down Tiff ever since I have been reading this strip. One exception was when Tiffany exposed Ann Eiffel’s phony pregnancy and saved her own father.
If Bets has a moment of introspection, everyone will think she is fine. Unfortunately Bets is used to turning every situation to her financial advantage. Opposites attract, indeed.
We still don’t know a lot about Bets’s background, homelife. Remember, she indicated that she did not want to go home for the summer. I suspect she has had to work very hard to get where she is, against some really difficult odds. She’s so used to competing and fighting that the idea of collaborating with Tiff is unfamiliar, and unsettling.
Gunther drills right down to the point, and from appearance, it is difficult to tell if (A) he is getting the “Silence and buzz off” treatment, or (B) perhaps she is realizing that Tiff is being a very good friend by letting her stay at the Farrell Estate, and she needs to even the playing field by helping Tiff. With Greg and his misdirection plays, it is sometimes hard to tell. Anyone have any feeling as to the direction this may go? A? B? C? None of the above? Perhaps she hires Les to bump off Gunther?
Tune in tomorrow, same Bets time, same Bets channel.
Today’s episode brought to you by Fleaspeck’s Flyspecks, the letter “J”, and the color purple.
Friendship and cooperation, a new twist for the hyper-competitve Bets and the clueless Tiff. Ah! The beneficial influence of Luannverse may be at play here, maybe not. Hmmm.
Good old Gunther, he can’t stand injustice and has no problem pointing it to Bets, but she has an ulterior motive, something more important that making money… Maybe Bets is trying to give to Tiffany an experience that will make her grow as a business woman? Seeing how first she helped her with social media and then encouraged her to try something else, I would say yes. Bets wants to encourage Tiffany to work hard and find her way, I think Tiffany is the first friend with which Bets shares the passion for business and she probably wants her to be successful and that there is a friendly competition between them. For me, this is the explanation.
If Bets and Tiffany join forces, that still leaves us with some questions.
(1) What will happen about Stefani? Will they try to foist her off on Dez? Will the issue resolve itself somehow (e.g., Kip getting a single room again)? Or …?
(2) Who or what will throw a monkey wrench into the works? The zoning board? Some other government agency? Complaints from neighbors? Tiff’s Dad? Burglars? A pool party getting out of control when it’s crashed by a bunch of Bets’s fans and their friends, friends of friends, etc? Something else?
(3) If adversity strikes, will there be some twist that makes things OK? I picture a couple burglars roaming the mansion while Tiff and Bets are in Maui. They bust into a locked room in a far corner of the south wing, and as they’re checking it out, one says to the other, “Hey, Knuckles! Lookit dis! I had a dame once what wuz always goin’ on about how high-class and espensive dis stuff wuz. Wannid me ta take her ta Paree a give ’er a fat wadda dough to buy some.” So they decide not to bother with the college kids’ junk, the mansion furniture, etc. Instead, they load their van with cartons and cartons of “Souffle” lingerie.
Yet another “Warning Sign” from Bets, which of course, you’ll choose to ignore.
But think for a moment: You have to TELL Bets, a young woman who has supposedly been “abused and hurt” by others, that what she’s doing to Tiffany is wrong.
Let that SINK in, Gunth.
Well at least Gun is the “voice of reason” here. So Maybe that will earn him another “star in his crown,” or something.
Now if only Ox will talk some sense into Tiffany in the next few panels, then this arc will be worthwhile.
And maybe a trip with the four of them to Maui, later. ;-)
Tiffany’s “valid business” is cramming the belongings of strangers into her father’s house which is not built to be a storage facility. And she is apparently doing this without her father’s knowledge or consent.
Oh boy….. Gunther is taking Tiffany’s side over Bets’ side in a competition.. It doesn’t matter whether or not he’s correct about what he says… And he is correct, it isn’t fair… this isn’t going to end well for him…
Tiffany : Everything Gunther tells you is a lie. Remember that. Everything Gunther tells you is a lie.Gunther: Listen to this carefully, Bets. I am lying.Bets: (On her 3-D printed suit, the chest lights blink faster, and her cellphone is frantically beeping) You say you are lying, but if everything you say is a lie then you are telling the truth, but you cannot tell the truth because everything you say is a lie. You lie. You tell the truth. But you cannot for… Illogical! Illogical! Please explain! (Smoke starts coming out of Bets’ head, android overload is inevitable.)
You are all missing the point. She has a BET with Tiff. Her name is Bets. She now understands that her name has unconsciously placed her into this position. Quit over complicating it.
Leave it to Gunther to insert logic and fairness into this situation. Now that Bets has said money isn’t the object, she’ll have to decide what is. Maybe her competitive spirit or does she just want to beat Tiffany at something, anything. She should be nicer to Tiff.
(After speed learning mindfeed computer self-destructs)Number Two: What was your question?! Prisoner: It’s insoluble for man or machine. Number Two: What was it?! Prisoner: W-H-Y – Question mark. Number Two: “Why?” Prisoner: Why? (Episode 5, “The General,” The Prisoner )
I can’t wait until this storyline ends. I’m sick to death of shallow, self-absorbed Bets and her constant, egotistical obsession with her so-called “fans.”
Why is everyone saying the bet isn’t fair? Tiffany made the bet, she started it – quit whining for poor little Tiffany. She’s an airhead. Gunther needs to butt out.
Gunther is stating what I said a week ago, that it’s not a fair fight as Bets is starting out way ahead, there’s no way Tiff can win the bet. When she put her hand up, I don’t see that as “talk to the hand”, I think it means, “stop and let me think about what you just said”. I’m hoping Bets will think about this and stop the competition and take Gunther’s words to heart and look for ways to cooperate instead of compete.
I hope Gunther can get thru to her… there’s a famous line from a very campy movie, “Barbarella” (Jane Fonda as Queen of the Universe): “so they’re still engaged in primitive neurotic competition…”
Bets says making $ is not the goal. Then why did she initially say that the winner should get $500.00 from the loser? It’s just another way to further crush the person who earns less. At least she did eventually agree to a non-monetary prize.
Both Bets and Tiff do NOT have valid businesses, and it IS about the money. Tiff’s storage business is difficult to scale and has a very dicey expense to profit ratio. It’s one step above selling candles on ETSY as a career. She needs a profitable business plan. Bets has a well established, strongly branded, scalable business with a well structured and proven profit ratio. Plus Bets already tried to help Tiff be an influencer.
Either A: The dance Ox is doing is incredibly impressive or B: The recent display of Tiffany’s address has lead the way for Bets fans to swarm onto the property.
Bets: Does not compute! Does not compute! See: ‘Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and McCoy outwit the Androids’, using nonsense to confuse and disable the androids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbHtzqCge_8
believe, from my own view, a gamble isn’t about the windfall, though I’ve rarely ever done lottery tix and never casino. Most commonly, I had joined the exGF to Friday night bingos, and to me it’s not the actual money but the principle, uh, gratification, of scoring a ‘win’.
Though sometimes a win between friends can be pyrrhic, costing more than it’s worth.
To me, today has me thinking that Bets may POTENTIALLY have realized how competitive, controlling “, domineering, and attention seeking she often is. IF that IS what she has realized, then the ball is now in her court to decide if that is how she wants to be or if she needs to work on changing herself to be how she would LIKE to be.
