You should eat when you are hungry, stop eating as soon as you stop feeling hungry and not eat in accordance with the clock – eat according to your body.

One of the biggest dietary problems people have is “proportion distortion.” Mom fed us a large plate of food and restaurants typically serve twice as much food as a meal should contain. So we think that a one-foot diameter plate heaped up with food is “normal.”

The other issue, especially for those of us raised by depression-era mothers, is to “clean your plate” – it’s a sin to waste food. Also add grandmothers who came from countries where food was scarce.

Ideally, we should eat saucer-sized meals and then if you are still hungry wait five minutes and decide if you are still hungry enough to eat another one.

Yeah, like that’s going to work out on anyone’s schedule.

As a former secondary teacher, I truly hope the references to J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpieces come from folks who have read the books and not just from viewing the films. While they are some of the best movies I had seen in nearly 6 decades of movie watching, the books are far and away the most richly colorful and wonderful literature of the 1930’s. Beautiful use of language, richly detailed, colorful allusions, almost an entirely new mythology. The movies, also very well done, brought them off the page and into the world.

It’s the one you get by going through the drive-thru and eating in the car.. on the way to lunch. Because it’s a shameful practice done in solitary, it has no name.

One of the earliest signs that a friend is getting old – when his main topic of conversation is when and where to eat the next meal (even while he’s eating)… second sign is when he leads conversations with medical complaints…

It is called Tea. Though some confuse it with High Tea which it is not. Tea is served with finger sandwiches and biscuits (cookies). High Tea comes at 7 pm, and is a sit down meal that was once observed by the lower classes but is rarely observed today. I was once lucky enough to be invited to Tea at the Savoy in London, and it was amazing.
