Drat—I apparently got the date wrong for my favorite Non Sequitur. It showed a single rower in open area. The corporate Board table at a higher level and a Board Member saying “I don’t get it…After all the budget cuts to streamline the work force, why aren’t we moving faster?”

If they wanted an efficient galley they should have hired the Priestess of the Whip (Raquel Welch)1 for that gig.

This is actually very poignant. The Ship that size represents the government that all the deadbeats with their hands out want.

The two guys and the drummer represent the government that the taxed half want. If everyone had to pay as much of their income in taxes to the government as I do I think you would find a lot less people in favor of big government.

But the way you have it today, we have a whole bunch of people who don’t pay anything so if you tell them that the government could do even more for them if those evil rich bastards would just contribute more and they think that’s a very good idea.

We have seen government try to run a business. Without a profit motive and competition there is no cost control and the attempts all fail. But the dummies keep on trying.

Nothing wrong with government being run in a businesslike manner, with efficiency and accountability (which is not to say all, or even most, businesses are actually run that way). Trouble starts when government begins to think it actually IS a business and that public services should be profit centers. That’s when you start seeing things like forest preserves containing landfills, police departments dealing drugs, and roadside checkpoints that don’t catch any drunks but do write lots of profitable tickets for minor equipment violations (all of these things have been reported in the news). Government should provide those services that the public really wants (as demonstrated by a willingness to pay taxes for them). Nothing more, nothing less.

If this were a true reflection of business, then in addition to there being no rowers left, the drummer would have been promoted to his job with no training so he would be doing it wrong.

If the government was run like private enterprise, there would be an engine in the ship making it go faster, further and more efficiently at lower cost while the oarsmen would be on shore working other jobs. Wiley Miller has this one all wrong.

They cut the captain’s taxes, gave him a bonus for trimming costs of labor, and increased middle class taxes (cut out their food & water ration). Voila! Self-imploding ship (of state).

If the business model is so good, how come they run the military with socialism. Maybe we should let free enterprise do everything, build roads, bridges, the Air Force, Marines, Navy. Yup, a for profit military would be much more efficient.

Are you sure about that? I switched cable/internet/phone providers January 4th, returned the old provider’s equipment on the 5th to one of their authorized return centers, and fought with them for two months before I got an accurate final bill Thursday, after threats to have the account sent to a collection agency and a letter stating that service could be interrupted on Feb. 27th if they didn’t recieve immediate payment (that would have been a pretty neat trick- their line was disconnected when I changed over back in January). Final bill, when it all got straightened out? Six bucks and change after two months of back and forth. Meanwhile on 28 Feb. I got a vehicle registration renewal application from PA in the mail; went online to renew, and the papers and sticker arrived in today’s mail. Which would you say was the better run organization, the cable company (private) or the DMV (govt.)?

The post office was supposed to be run like a business. Ever since then, it has been deteriorating- both as a job and as a service. Fannie and Freddie started out as public corporations, too. W Bush touted his business school acumen and did a soft shoe shuffle on the White House stairs when McCain kept him waiting after the MBA president crashed the economy. Goppers! sheesh. whiners, blamers, followers of Norquist. historically and scientifically in error.
