ACTUALLY, the fastest moving bullets don’t kill people. It’s the ones that are slowing down as they pass through them.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said “Guns save lives.” People, you can’t have it both ways. If you’re going to say “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” then you have to say “Guns don’t save people, people save people.” If a gun is an inanimate object that can’t kill people on its own, then it certainly can’t save them.

It’s true, mostly. “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” Guns, modern ones especially that were unimaginable to the Framers of the Constitution, just make it a whole heck of a lot easier for people to kill people. Lots and lots and lots of people. More guns = more safer, right?

Maybe we should get closer to the root of the problem: Since it is a finger that “pulls the trigger” on a gun to propel the bullet (which may then kill someone): Maybe trigger fingers should be amputated from everyone (or maybe just gun owners?)

[And since a lot of people are killed when a knife blade penetrates their body, maybe we could amputate the hand that would wield a knife of anyone who possesses a sharp knife.]

In the late 70’s I was at the counter in a burger joint in Israel with a friend. A young woman reservist came in and set her assault rifle down so that the muzzle was aimed directly at my friend’s head. He said “Would you mind aiming that thing some other direction?” The young woman said “What’s the matter—you afraid of guns?” “No, ma’am, just bullets.”

Two major problems: What do you do about the 300,000,000 guns out there already. Number 2: What do we do about the mean, violent, aggressive people who are in possession of guns and have no respect for themselves or any human life. Any of the other arguments are political in nature and will solve nothing.

People with guns kill people, so all people with guns should be killed by other people with guns. Then those people should be killed by the government with guns. Then the government with guns can kill whoever it wants to kill.

The 2nd amendment included the term a well regulated militia. Are any of the civilian groups even close to well regulated?

Would they work better if placed under the control and direction of the national guard command in their states?

But, then, most claim not to recognize the federal or most local governments. You know, the ones that uphold their right to say those kinds of things without being arrested and imprisoned on the spot.

An office mate died suddenly. He was divorced and hadn’t seen his kids (now adults) for many years. When they came to settle his affairs (no will, no other relatives), they discovered that he had several hundred guns and so much ammunition stockpiled that they called in the authorities because they were afraid it might blow up. He had more ammo in his basement than he could have shot if he had lived another 50 years and spent all his time shooting.

There are subtle changes in language usage for harm / death as a result of using a gun. When the political climate offers a chance of additional gun regulation, such deaths are reported as “gun violence” – no mention of the shooter, the instrument is somehow responsible; when there is little chance of additional regulation, they are reported as “shootings” – the person is held responsible, not the instrument.

I have yet to see a bullet get up off the ground itself and then propel itself at someone. Just like I have yet to see a gun get up off the ground and fire that bullet. I’m fairly certain a person pulled a trigger. Just like when someone uses a pipebomb or a knife, we have to address the real issue. Until we do, any tool can be used to harm others, even tools like hammers.

Even in a poor country like the Philippines they have a voters ID. It has your picture and fingerprint. If you change your address you have to report to the Commission on Elections office in the city you moved to and get your ID updated. That office will contact your old office with your information. Then they will remove you from the rolls of your old city/village. You will not be able to vote until you check in with the new office. I know this because my Wife worked for the Commission of Elections for over 15 years.
