If Kate can finish her homework on the bus, her father needs to move her up to a more challenging class (Disclaimer: I actually never saw my daughter doing homework until 11th grade, so I’m not one to talk)
In high school, I managed two of three years to have a last-period class with a teacher who wanted us to do the chapter work in the last 10 minutes of the period. So I did his/her work during class, pretending to be taking notes. Then I had 10 or sometimes 15 minutes to do the rest of the day’s homework. I worked fast, so as long as I didn’t need a bibliography or like that, I could usually get more than half done.
I did all homework/assignments immediately. Back when you had to do research in the library, that meant in my case, me and one other person out of 40 wanted the same books. The rest of the people felt rushed, and complained “the books I need are always checked out”. I never felt rushed or stressed. The other 18 always did.
Did homework in Study Hall. Once home there were farm chores and pick-up games to be had. Football, basketball, skating, bike riding etc. Never could figure out why so many friends choose to use “free” time doing what they could do while imprisoned in the school.
Hardly ever did homework on time when I first went. Later, when it was important and I was going to night school, I did it over and over. The good part is I had a week to do it before the next class.
Of all of Wiley’s wonderful characters, I’ve got to say that Danae is my favorite. I love the way that Wiley draws her expressions. Today’s 3rd panel is a classic example!
I suspect there’s a little of Danae in all of us – even when we pretend that we’re more like Kate.
I was like Kate. I never had to do homework, because I used every free minute during the school day to get it done while the other kids were socializing. I made straight A’s. I didn’t have many friends, but I didn’t care. Most kids my own age seemed like barbarians to me, and I was indeed “from another planet” to them.
I was from Kate’s planet. I always had my homework done before I got home, usually on the bus ride. It was not until I took calculus in high school that I had problems that needed evening time to solve. It was a matter of time management, working on assignments while the subject was fresh in my mind and being able to read over a thousand words per minute. I was very lucky.
If school is supposed to prepare us for “the real world”, how many real-world jobs require you to take some of your work home with you so you can turn it in tomoro?
Careful, Kate…I know from personal experience that a lot of folks thoroughly resent efficient people. And if given the chance, they will try to make things difficult for you so you can be as disorganized and wasteful as they are. Keep details about your efficient ways to yourself as much as possible.
I can relate to Kate. However, all the “Uses My Time Wisely” awards, straight A’s, commendations, plaques & ribbons for Honor Roll, etc etc won’t land you a better job. Found this out the hard way.
My high schooI was mainly for boarders, and all daily activities (academics, arts, sports, work) were mandatory in the interest of balance and health (and keeping the kids too busy for mischief). In college I did interesting extracurricular stuff at the expense of my grades. One was a student-directed singing group, loosely led by a guy so brilliant he never seemed to need time to get work done, and was always friendly and easygoing.

I used to do my homework in class also, but on the day it was due.

I needed motivation to do homework and the pressure of the last minute usually worked for me.

Actually, I kinda think it’s Danae’s antenna that’s pointed somewhere off earth, but she does have the most amazing adventures.

Well, at least from a different one than from the one Danae is from.

The only problem with that plan is if the teacher has other plans.

I always thought homework should be illegal. It was never monitored. There were no minimums or maximums. It’s like teaching is more art than science.

I agree that someone in this strip is from another planet, but I don’t think it’s Kate.

One son did his before class was over. The other did his but never bothered to turn it in (till we caught onto him).

When Kate becomes successful later in life someone will call her an entitled racist white supremacist.

90 minute ride in the morning and 90 back home again each day, but who can stand reading&writing on a moving bus?

In college, I scheduled all my classes in the morning to get them out of the way.

It was an hour each way on the bus in high school. Teachers didn’t like my handwriting but I had time to learn.

So Kate’s from another planet – not to be mistaken for the one Danae’s on, the Postpone planet.
