Back in the 1960’s “the goat” was what they called the player who was most responsible for loosing the game. At least that’s how I remember New York News Sports cartoonist Bill Gallo using it.

I’ve always found that term mildly offensive, especially when applied to young people – not that it matters, since I am neither young nor a GOAT in any field. But in my mind “goat” will always be a lecherous old man.

Germans who thought (and think) that Hitler was a total megalomaniac mocked him by calling him Gröfaz – „Größter Feldherr aller Zeiten“ (greatest commander of all times). To the fascists this was difficult. It was obviously an insult but it was also a quote from Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel who was serious about it in the early years of WW2.

There were also some similar mocking acronyms in Germany later on for other megalomaniacs. Like Gröpaz referring to Trump.

It used to be that the “goat” in sports was the guy blamed for a big loss. That’s what it still means to me. This new usage is all due to one idiot who wrote a book.
