Ask your mother, Nelson, to take you to the grocery store in order to know what an artichoke is.

Speaking of artichokes, don’t bother doing this recipe from Food Wishes:

Kind of like eating crabs. Good eating, but too much work.

Poor Nelson. By his age, I’d already had (part of) an artichoke, and learned the joy of lemon-butter dripping off my elbows (hey, I was about 6 or 7, I think). I’ve loved them ever since, and that’s longer than I’ve loved most things. Though things did get a little rough when I was losing my baby incisors…

Since then, I have of course learned that there are other excellent vehicles for lemon-butter, garlic-butter and occasionally honey-butter. (swallows some saliva).

That’s the trouble with old sayings. One first has to educate the listener about the context.

I’ve never had an artichoke. And the online pictures don’t inspire me. But the saying would work well with “pomegranate”. Barely worth all the effort to get to the seeds.

Makes you wonder, who was the first person to look at an artichoke and say:

I think I could eat that??

Earl described a golf ball. It’s a lot of effort to peel off the outer shell, and then get through all of the wound-up material that surrounds the inner core. Once you get to that core? It’s pretty useless.

I’ve often wondered about the person who first looked at an artichoke and thought, “I bet I could eat that.” Of course, I’ve wondered the same thing about Brussels sprouts.

An artichoke is an edible version of a thistle, and if you wait too long to eat it, it will bloom into a beautiful flower in your garden. Thankfully not as pokey as a thistle.

I saw this in a Pickles strip, many years ago…young people talk about the future because they have no past. Old people talk about the past because they have no future.
