“Dear Diary,” wrote modest Herr Mann / taking his journal and pen in hand. / “Today we finished my portrait. / I don’t know quite what to make of it. / While it’s a good enough likeness, am I really that bland?”
My family is VERY fortunate to have the daily journals that were kept by my great-grandmother. They cover period from about 1879 to the 1930s when she passed away. She wrote in them practically every single day and used every page. She recorded their daily life (her husband was a farmer so tidbits of planting, harvesting & what they got for a price when sold.) Also things about friends and neighbors – who got married, who had a child, who died. There were also entries about visiting people and having oyster stew. I have attempted to transcribe them, but have only made it through two of them. (And if I’ve posted this previously, I apologize for redundancy – my memory is not so great anymore.)

I have added a comment there (awaiting Mr. Melcher’s approval) pointing to some info about this artist. First work by him used here.

/// F. X. tries here to write, yet not look
at the quill, or the ink or the book.
“Court Accountant,” that’s him.
Looked away on a whim.
It’s a risk that he should have forsook.
/// For the lines he just hastily jotted
are all crooked, besmirched and ink-blotted.
And the ledger’s now filled
with illegibly quilled
words that make it seem he is besotted.

He’d like Texas to be a “free nation”////But he differs from you and me/
In his vision of “liberty”/
Though his need is acute/
For folks to pick fruit/
To him “free” still means “Mexican-free”.
