An absolutely fascinating book that shows how the understanding of pi also shows the state of human knowledge and progress and lack thereof at times is this:
I don’t know whether it’s the crust, the filling, or both, but I’ve never encountered a pie that I liked. Meringue pie, which I have NOT encountered yet, sounds intriguing, but, alas, meringue is made from eggs. As of last year, my body has decided that eggs are Not Good, and to be… rejected… from here on out.
Here is a puzzle. You have a circle of diameter D, and an area AC. You have square with side length the same as the diameter D, and an area AS. You want to know what the ratio of AC to AS is. Find it without using pi.
I was going to make a Bavarian Cream. I may make a strawberry rhubarb pie instead. Or maybe the Bavarian Cream with a strawberry rhubarb compote. Hmmm – what to do, what to do?
Thanks, Georgia for actually helping me out on an art project today. I am building a large cardboard sculpture of a wheel and need to figure out the circumference. I was meaning to look up the formula online but the robber mice have so handily demonstrated it today!
Also Albert Einstein’s birthday. (Fun fact: In MS Office, when you go to set the date and time format, the sample date is today, I believe in memory of Einstein. Nice little Easter egg.)
Thank you Miss Dunn, I love you even more. That’s an accurate math lesson, and a good one. My lesson: I’d have my students bring in various circles. Extra credit for most creative (bike wheel as opposed to coin). We’d measure them with tape measures and meter sticks/rulers I provided, then divide to discover pi. I brought a hula hoop for variety since most students brought something small like a lid. I’d express surprise that we all got the same answer although our circles were different sizes. Hashtag Discovery Method Math. Hashtag Moore Method. Thank you BCN for awesome cats and awesome math.
Pi is a transcendental number. Among other things it can’t be expressed as the ratio of two rational numbers. It gets worse but the word “polynomial” comes into play and most people would prefer not to know that.
I once read of a demonstration that used a wooden floor with one-inch-wide strips and toothpicks cut to one-inch length. If you randomly drop the toothpicks and they are free to rotate, you will find that the ratio of twice the total number of toothpicks to the number that land crossing a line is pi. Of course, it takes a LOT of toothpicks

I make homemade lemon meringue and pecan pies (from scratch including the crust)
this year, I want to try my hand at something a little different, namely an Irish cottage pie for St. Patrick’s day and a few other real traditional treats from the emerald isle.
Pucky you look so cute in your Pi t-shirt. Advanced calculus (not the the equation for Pi is advanced) always got me as well, so I sympathise with it being confusing.
On the subject of egg substitutes for recipes: 1 T. ground flax seed and 3 T. of very warm water. Whisk water and ground flax seeds together in a bowl until combined, about 30 seconds. Let sit until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Whisk again, about 30 seconds. Let sit until thickened, about 2 minutes more. Equals one large egg. I have used this; it works. It comes from allrecipes.com
As i read this, I am actually eating an apple pie, also how many digits of pi can you recite, i know 3.14159, and that’s it. (useing a website copy-paste doesn’t count)

Don’t look now, guys, but I think there may be, close by here, a plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a Robber Mouse.

The mice show up, a pie goes bye
Sweet Pucky thinks they’re just explainin’ pi
Filchin’ a pie, filchin’ a pie
Gotta get it home, dessert resupply
They love to steal, duh! they’re robber mice
But they’re not rude, takin’ just one slice
Filchin’ a pie, filchin’ a pie
Gotta get it home, a great feast is nigh
Bye, bye, bye, snatchin’ a pie
My, oh, my, filchin’ a pie

Don McLean: American Pie
My, my, the circumference of pie
Oh, the diameter is d times 3.14159
The Robber Mice, you see it’s their time to shine,
Saying this pie tastes so mighty fine
This pie tastes so mighty fine.
…….
Did you use a homemade crust,
And save a piece for all of us?
And is it apple, or maybe cherry pie?
Now do you make a fine pecan?
Or is custard in your plan?
And do you like it a la mode?
…….
Now I know you love your peach pie, too
Sweet cherry pie with lots of goo!
Baking is such fun!
Is there enough for everyone?
It was great to learn geometry,
The girls all taught it well, I see,
But why are there only three?
Wounder where Agnes could be?
The day, we lost a slice!
We started singing:
…….
My, my, the circumference of pie
Oh, the diameter is d times 3.14159
The Robber Mice, you see it’s their time to shine,
Saying this pie tastes so mighty fine
This pie tastes so mighty fine.
