Hoping the experiments were psychological and not medical – mazes and boxes being a little more family-comic-strip-friendly than, uh, medical horror territory.
I wish I still had my “Rats Have Rights” t-shirt. I’d wear it this week in your honor, Robber Mice. As a long-time animal rights advocate, I’m already finding this story arc emotionally disturbing. The reality for mice in laboratories is terrible and painful. The T-shirt wasn’t accurate either: rats (and mice) should have rights, but sadly, don’t.
I remember speculating that that building was a school, as the wall of windows reminded me of the schools that were built when I was young. But now we find it’s even worse!
Singin’ “…One is a genius, the other’s ones insane* They’re laboratory mice* Their genes have been spliced* Their twilight campaign is easy to explain* To prove their mousy worth* They’ll overthrow the earth*…”
I went back to the 8/4/19 drawing Georgia did of the town. This time, I looked at it on my big, work computer screen. I would love to visit such a place. I only hope that there would be a historical cemetery that I could see.
P.S. I would love to buy a print of the original map.
In my youth, (1960-70"s) I worked as a scrub nurse for an experimental research facility. (yes, animals ) MD’s would perform surgery on the animals to perfect procedures such as kidney transplants, vagotomies, trach resections, etc. for their human patients. The best was meeting and assisting the great heart surgeon Michael DeBakey. In one marathon session 40 other doctors learned how to do bypasses and heart transplants. The doctor who did my Mom’s triple by-pass in 2002 was one of those doctors.
Well it’s understandable that the Grim family took what was left of their media (fairytales) empire and transitioned to technology. They were probably driven out by The Mouse. I’m surprised The Mouse’s lawyers haven’t handed Dunn industries a cease and desist order for having a comic with mice in it. Time to Lawyer up!
I love that she is using a “broadcast” date that we can find on our calendars too! Ironic I’m (being forced to) watch(ing) a Peppa Pig on recycling as I read this.
Georgia’s original revelation that Natasha escaped from a research lab can be found here as a reply to a comment by @lpayne, which is the featured comment of the day.
As a scientist I am worried about this. I have worked with rats. In order to avoid their being stressed as I worked with them I started by handling them every day, sometimes roaming the halls of the college. (A little good PR for rodents.) I have also had lab rats as pets. They make excellent companions. But much of the miracle of modern medicine comes from research on animals. We just need to insist that they be treated as humanely as possible. Thank you to wintercollie.

Don’t forget to take any answer with a grain of rice, Bea. Nat may be a slightly unreliable narrator.

Barry Mann/Cynthia Weill, Performed by The Animals et al: We Gotta Get Out of This Place
In this gloomy old part of the city
Where the sun refused to shine
People tell me there are strange things happening
…….
Violet, my friend, outside is pretty
And one thing I know is true
Time to escape to there, I know
Watch from the window the lovely sunrise
Watched the things out there for the taking
Tired of watching and worrying about what could happen
And I’ve been looking to go (yeah)
Every night and day (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)
We gotta get out of this place
If it’s the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
‘Cause there’s cheese and things to take for me and you!

They’re on the lam and now they pray it lasts
The road behind was rocky
But now they’re feeling plucky
Nat talks with Bea and recalls their past
And that’s the reason why they’re happy and fast
And she sang
“Ain’t nothin’ gonna break our stride
Nobody gonna slow us down, oh no
We got to keep on moving
Ain’t nothin’ gonna break our stride
We’re cunning and we ‘borrow’ what’s found
Oh yeah, we got to keep on grooving"
