Stamp collecting used to be quite popular when I was a kid in the ’70s along with Estes Model Rockets, coin collecting and the 150 in 1 electronic project kit from Radio Shack. I think Estes is still around but obviously Radio Shack went belly up a few years back and while coins and stamps can be valuable, I wonder if kids still collect them today.
In k-12 I tried four sports, three instruments, two clubs, and many drama productions. I don’t know if it was low perseverance or a burning desire to try new things. I never did have one collection, a jar of bugs, a matchbox of bottle caps, and lots of rocks and shells.
I work in a chemical lab, and I “take prisoners” – bugs that wander in and are found in the lab. Spiders, beetles, etc. I never “grew out” of this inclination!
The last little cricket we caught was fed to the resident spider who’s web is right outside the lab.

We were encouraged to save leaves and flowers by pressing them between newsprint (and under heavy books). Bugs not so much…

Calvin might like to get into Amateur Radio. There’s many younger Hams out there he could talk to that would help him get his Novice.
