Hey Calvin. Can I have your autograph? Just sign it on this paper saying, “Whoever signs their name here must stop being demanding and ridiculous.” Thanks.

When you have a personality like Calvin’s, people won’t be your friend unless they’re contractually obligated.

Calvin Only family members are contractual and that contract is called a Will. Be so thankful that you are an only child.

Huh. Sound advice, that. Of course, in Hollywood, you might still want to have that contract. Non-disclosure agreements don’t really work these days.

Contractual or conditional – it amounts to the same thing: they are NOT a friend.

It’s worth remembering that one of the signs of a narcissist is that they expect complete loyalty from their friends. Normal people are saddened when a friend drifts away; a narcissist becomes angry.

I think it’s worth remembering how Hobbes became Calvin’s friend. In the very first strip, Calvin was telling Dad that he had set a snare to catch a tiger and was using a tuna fish sandwich as bait. Dad sarcastically replied, “Tigers like tuna fish sandwiches, huh?” The last panel showed the tiger that we came to know as Hobbes was caught in the snare but happily munching on the sandwich. In the second strip, Calvin asked Dad what he should do with the tiger. Dad replied, “Take him home and stuff him, Calvin. Can’t you see I’m busy.” This time, the last panel showed that Hobbes had eaten food Calvin had brought from the icebox. “No more for me, thanks. I’m completely stuffed.”

Calvin seems to have bought Hobbes’s friendship with a tuna sandwich and food from the icebox. Hobbes has proved a good friend in many ways and sometimes manages to teach Calvin a life lesson – although he usually fails. He has also shown his conscience in changing from tuna fish to salmon when he learned that dolphins were caught and killed with the tuna. His change of diet came in a strip first published in 1990.
