Some people used Tinker Toys to build a computer that could play Tic-Tac-Toe!

I presume you need a successful, working concept/machine to even apply for a patent.

Look at Dad in panel 3. For one brief moment he wondered if Calvin would come up with a viable concept.

Dad knows Calvin all too well to believe that, but I bet he’s interested in how Mum will respond to Calvin’s ‘work’ :p

I see Tinkertoys! Hasbro now owns them, but I can’t recall the last time I saw Tinkertoys “in the wild”.

Calvin: I’m inventing a robot.

Calvin’s Dad shows a good sense of ironic humour but he has no sense of the past and present verbs.

A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law”.

A Zeroth law was revealed after the initial three stating that: A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. I’m just glad Calvin’s dad took an interest in his sons achievement.

Is this the only hint we ever get that Dad is a patent attorney?

I can’t remember seeing his dad take such an interest in his creative pursuits before. Of course, he discourages a minute later.

First thought, Calvin will probably grow up to become a politician.

After stating in yesterday’s strip that a coffee can would be too small for the head, Calvin apparently used one, anyway. Unless it was a big bulk can of baked beans or something (and I can see Calvin raiding the pantry, opening up a big can and dumping the contents).I like Dad’s final comment.

Calvin, think about it. If you invented a robot that does what people want, you’d be history.
