Gunther: "Uh... excuse me? Everyone? A toast!! To Quill- a genuine talent and a true friend!"
Everyone: "TO QUILL!"
Luann: "You have a lot of close friends here, Quill"
Quill: "Yeah. Close friends who are about to be 8,000 miles away..."
Rosa’s not even looking at Gunther while he makes his toast. She either looks completely bored with Gunter or she is gazing wistfully at some sexier guy in the distance off in the distance.
I think the smoke represents the end of an idyllic phase of Luann’s life….when she finally got to see Quill in her own world but her ‘dream’ is coming to an end as he is leaving. Most of his new friends were able to attend this impromptu farewell party but, for various reasons, others could not be there.
Rosa is looking up at Gunther with a content look in her eyes. He has put his shyness aside and has gotten brave enough to make a farewell toast to Quill who had appreciated his designing talents which others have taken for granted.
Obviously, none of the friends had much money so they could only have TJ provide cold drinks….which he is most willing to do in order to publicize his new venture.
Even Tiff is happy to be among this group and it appears she left her uppity attitude at home for the day. That said, she and Ox always did seem to get along previously, so, perhaps, she was glad to see him again. I think she liked the tall, strong and dependable type anyway. Hope something comes of it.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Quill return for a more prolonged visit in the coming school year.
Brought to you, by….Steam Insect repellant… “Say ‘hey hey goodbye’ to your pest problems with Steam”…..==The Candy 2 and 4 door vehicles, from Ocasek Motor Cars…“Redesigned and yet still classic”…. “You’ll be saying Hello to it Again and Again”….==“Gold” Timepieces… from Andrew Artisan Crafts… “If you had a party, invited everyone you knew… you’d stand out, with the biggest gift in the smallest box”……==Scandal Thrift… " With great selection, they will all be a ‘good buy’ to you"==And by…Ray Tires, and the Handy-Charles Lug/Jack System, from Wheeler Industries…. "So dependable, you won’t think twice once you ‘hit the road’ "……
Actually, I think both Knute’s and Delta’s clothes are supposed to represent the typical clothing worn by your typical teenager….in other words, they are assimilating into ordinary teenagers instead of choosing ‘over the top’ items that make them stand out from the norm.
I am surprised definitely about no Delta(she is one who suggested the party) and a lil surprised there is no Bern, and I would have expected for all the Degroots and Toni to be there
" Why does Knute have a feather on his right chest?"^Possibly to represent Quill, as a “quill” is a writing instrument (feather pen)…….==“is drinking a purple drink except for Rosa.”^Looks like purple cans and red labels, on the zoom in of the strip….==“The Australian flags are coloured black where it should be blue. It gives it a kind of dark, solemn look.”^Could possibly just be a dark, midnight-navy blue…
I agree with those who say she’s looking up with contentment at Gunth…. her head is ever so slightly tilted up, and her almond-shaped eyes have that look of calmness (I recognize that look, as such type of eyes are in my family)…..
Wow, thanks! Now we’ve got more shopping to do…. I’ve got to try that pepper in our pasta…. ==I guess it would make more sense for dry wine to keep the tastes in line… I was hoping sweet wine, as around here, some like their ‘pasghetti’ with that “hint of sugar” flavor, Lol! But I’m always one to explore new tastes… and my wife will love the chance to try this… thanks for the suggestion!
Maybe Delta and Bern weren’t included in this strip, to give the others a chance to be in the strip for a bit, as it is kinda dark over in the corners that the strip doesn’t show… lol!==And Maybe Bern is on vacation, resting her pet “Snark”….. ha ha!
“…white wine has no place in an authentic pasta sauce – especially not a Riesling,….”^Though not “authentic”, still…. there’s an adventure out there in the different variations… there’s all kinds of combinations and all kinds of palates… it’s like re-inventing a dish, or making the dish unique for you or your area…..As I was mentioning earlier, in the South, and even in some of the Mid-Atlantic… they like their pastas/ sauces sweet (some actually will put literal sugar in to achieve this)… I’ve found honey mustard to have a nice taste with some pizzas… I’ve found some who like chocolate on their fries….there’s the pleasurable taste of “beer chicken”…and then, too, there’s “Hawaiian Pizza”… I like mine with crab and pineapple….. there’s sweet and sour meatballs… there’s…..
I suspect that we’re seeing only part of the party, with the most concerned principals on stage for this farewell toast which Gunther proposes and four—Crystal, Knute, Tiffany, and Oxford—join in vocally. Rosa looks on contentedly (as several have noted), and Luann and Quill strike the proper notes to establish the scene. It seems likely to me that more guests are not in sight, out and among “us,” the audience, including but not limited to Delta and Bernice and, if they are not at work, Toni, Brad, Frank, and Nancy….
Nancy will be devastated that She didn’t get to bid Quill a special farewell. Frank will be devastated when his credit card statement arrives. Luann should have paid for the party herself, with all the money she’s earned this summer from her hard work at the jobs she took when drama camp rejected her, such as… uh….
“Like I said, it’s only Wednesday. We could be seeing them before the week is over.”^Yeah, I figured such… Delta was there yesterday, and I figured that there’d be screen time for Bern later, if that’s how greg was going… that’s why I said to give others a chance to be “rotated” in for this week…
" A possible colorist error?"^It is possible….. some very quality strips on GoComics that have their creators post on them have explained at times when there was either a miscommunication about the color, (including the shading of some characters, or something else involving background/foreground objects) or a rush to post that involves a change…..
“The Australian flags are coloured black where it should be blue. It gives it a kind of dark, solemn look.”
Seriously, this is because most newspapers still print the daily comics in black-and-white, and cartoonists draw with that in mind, using black to represent dark colors. The newspaper syndicate colors them in for those few papers that have color comics on weekdays (and for the internet), but they can’t color over the black areas that have been inked.
Just for the record, I’m not too crazy about the new coloring for the strip, which apparently started on Monday. All colors are now much stronger, and – to me -not as attractive. Just for the record. The strip is still very readable.
“This makes no sense.”^It may be because the Evanses are fond of Austrailia, having spent time there…. Quill could be there, to represent their attachment to “down under”, and whatever storylines (ex.: Lu and Quill) they create… ==And, Greg has said that his characters are really him , so, that would explain the characters’ ‘closeness’ to him…
When you use the CNTRL/+ or CNTRL/- feature, you can enlarge the picture even further… upon doing so, you can notice some features become oddly shaped or distorted out of their intended shape (e.g., the design on Knutes shirt) while others become more clear (e.g. the “purple cans” that many are holding)…..==In looking at them, it seems that the design on Knute’s shirt was drawn or meant to be viewed at the level that we can see it, and the “circles” on it were probably incidental, or a “generic design” to go inside of the “main design” of his shirt…==But, conversely, the drinks that they are holding are not necessarily “purple drinks”…. there are red designs on them, in the purple, and also writing on them, as well… so it seems that they are meant to be cans/containers… in addition, there are teal containers on TJs tray….
Hey now the jig is up!! All the couples are shown, of course Luann and Quill, Knute and Crystal, and Gunther and Rosa. Tiffany is in the back with Ox, although they are not a couple contrary to some comments. Also of course TJ who is catering with his truck. Whether he has a girlfriend or not, I think he is a connection between Brad, who is after all grown, and the teenage characters of the strip, who are about to move on I believe, but the couples who are the heart are clearly indentified in this party. To me, and I agree with some other comments, where are Delta and Bernice? They never have had any boyfriends. It is very, very interesting to me. What do you have in mind Greg? Are you about to pull the trigger on some major societal shift in sexuality? I hope so -:) There I said it.
Luann gave the party, not Crystal, and Luann probably invited everyone she thought would like to say good bye to Quill. She undoubtedly included Crystal because Crystal is (supposedly) Tiffany’s best friend – invite Tiff, also invite her friend.
Why you would suggest an arc where Luann and Crystal argue over who has to be ‘stuck’ with Knute, since Crystal seems to like the guy.
We are probably only seeing part of the party; probably Delta is there, somewhere. I wouldn’t think Bernice would want to be there, since she can’t stand to listen to Luann talk about Quill. I don’t think Bernice is interested in Luann as a friend anymore.
Agree that Bernice is sick of hearing Luann talk about Quill; disagree that Delta is just as sick, since Delta was the one suggesting the good bye party. Also disagree that Delta is showing no support for the black community by supporting environmental protection; industries that pollute may provide jobs to the black community ok, but when they locate on the cheapest land (usually near the poorest communities, sometimes black, sometimes poor whites) it is the residents of those communities who pay the biggest price in health impacts. Ask anyone who grew up in coal country.
And Delta also works on behalf of the elderly, not all of whom are white. There’s nothing at all wrong with a teen who is involved with community issues.
You can’t fit 20 people into one of these tiny cartoon panels and still see who they are. Probably Delta is elsewhere, just not displayed because she is less important to the current arc. Ditto Degroots and Toni.
You mentioned something interesting, though. Most of the food truck events that are now occurring here in Florida don’t require the provision of portable, uh, ‘convenience facilities’. My bosses want me to create some amendments to our land development regs that would allow food trucks in our community — maybe I’ll add requirements for porta-potties, just in case… gee, thanks for the idea….
Does anyone know which city in Australia Quill lives in? That way, by adding 8,000 miles, I can figure out what part of the US Luann lives in …unless this is common knowledge?. Thx!
“Variety is the spice of life and vice – versa.”^Well said! And not just about food! -
“who ever heard of anything Italian being spicy?”^Anyone who didn’t watch that Alka Seltzer commercial! (Mamma Mia, that-za spicy-uh meat-a-ball!)….-“Must be their cars that are spicy…”^Ha ha! And-a ex-a-spensive!…. (Ferarri, Lancia, Alfa, Lamborghini, etc..)
Thanks! "That clip is good times, good times! That’s when some commercials weren’t so annoying…I keep a playlist of vintage commercials on one of my channels, myself on YouTube and added this one so that I don’t have to keep fast forwarding …. ==Also have a DVD or two of them… Even has the Meadowlark Lemon Burger King commercial and some other classics….
Luann invited Tiffany to the party so she could show off how much Quill cares for her and ignores Tiff. Tiff accepted because Luann bought the only picture of her – an expensive one at that. Tiff figured that Luann has finally decided to be her friend. She also knows that Quill doesn’t want her, BUT Ox really like her. So she wants everyone to know that she is attractive to him.
“He (Evans) has mentioned that occassionally he looks to see the number count, but seldom reads.”
As expected. I would imagine his legal folks would not care too much if he were to acknowledge his presence here… the old “fanfic” issue. If he should acquire an idea or suggestion based on what someone might have said on these types of forums and subsequently uses it, whomever wrote it here could sue him for copyright infringement. I used to belong to a bunch of old USENET news groups about movies and tv shows, and none of the cast or crew could participate in them while the show was actively in production. But many did after the given show went off the air.
I “think” the background was purposely left “blank” because if it was colored in, there would just be too much of everything, and the characters would be “lost” against such a background. It does look like they are in the clouds, though! I do think Delta should have been definitely included. She was the friend who suggested the party, after all. I’m not sure if Quill is sad or not about leaving his “close” friends in Pitts…after all, he must have “close” friends in Australia… He just looks tired…or is drained from the drama camp and all the work he had to do as the male lead. I’m guessing we won’t hear from him for a while as the others start to gear up for the beginning of a new school year.
For the record, when I’m responding to a post, I generally drag-and-drop the post (or the segment of it) that I’m responding to into the reply field, and I put that part in boldface.
I really wish everyone would do that. It gets hard to follow the discussion sometimes, especially when the commenter being replied to has posted several comments. I always get here rather late and many times the original comment is several pages back.
I’ve always floated half a ship for TJ and Delta, but Leviticus put a different idea in my head. If Diane still lives next door she may stop by TJ’s truck some time. TJ could keep up with her much better than Brad ever could. I would be interested in seeing Brad explain to Toni why it bothers him so much.
And just to clarify, the thought of someone being impotent isn’t what I find funny (that is a serious problem); it’s the thought that this could be a future arc.
I think the same link that “Sara” was talking about, with the “Wizard of Oz” on FB, has Greg mentioning Quill actually “going home”… so I guess that for now, it’s a “boot back to Oz”….
Being from Escondido (in North County), I’ve always knew it was set in the area from back in the 1990s. The mall luann hung out in was modeled after El Camino Real.
Honestly, though, I learned quite a bit about the color aspect, today… found myself with the “mad scientist” laughter after discovering the color codes/ formula.. but yeah, I’ve still got a ways to go… lol!
Wow! Pushing 300 comments!I like the character, he’s cool in a manly hetero way, but this strip reminds me of the saying:Everyone give us happiness; some when they arrive, others when they leave. In Quill’s case, both times.
You claim TJ is “afraid of women” because he did not make out with Tiffany or Luann when he had the chance, or have sex with Ann when offered, as “a cad with no morals whatsoever” would normally do.
Is it not at least possible that he is a man in his twenties who chooses not to pursue physical relationships with sixteen-year-old girls, one of whom is his best friend’s little sister, and that his reaction to Ann was based on disgust, rather than fear? If so, does that not suggest he has a fairly well-defined set of morals, or at least ethics, after all?
*
Thank you for this! Exactly my thoughts, RWJAMES, only very much better put.

“Maybe we are going to get the reason why she didn’t come to see the show at drama camp, and it may not be a happy one for Gunther.”
It would indeed be a serious turn of events if Rosa did not go to see the show. Isn’t it possible she was there, just not shown?

There is one possible exception… the assembly of cartoon strip icons in tribute when Lu was reading about their gathering in New Orleans with Frank…

Lol, that is a seriously funny remark! Talk about ideas . . . I wonder if that arc will ever turn up.

Works in our house – I mess ’em up, she cleans ’em up…
*Works for me, too. My guy’s by far the better cook of the two of us. He cooks, I clean, we’re both happy.

But wouldn’t Greg then have to acknowledge in print who gave him each idea? That might prove to be (to him) a royal pain in the butt after a while.
“Pluggers” does that every day.

“Actually, I wasn’t trying to be funny . . .”
And just to clarify, the thought of someone being impotent isn’t what I find funny (that is a serious problem); it’s the thought that this could be a future arc.

Being from Escondido (in North County), I’ve always knew it was set in the area from back in the 1990s. The mall luann hung out in was modeled after El Camino Real.

Thank you for this! Exactly my thoughts, RWJAMES, only very much better put.
