Duke: Earl, did you know Trff was plotting a comeback? Earl: No, but don't offer to help... We can't afford some pro bono restoration gig. We're only taking paying clients now! Speaking of which, we've just been asked to rep a new breakaway republic. Interested? Duke: Not the kurds again... Earl: No, Texas.

“Free Again, free again! Thank God Almighty, we’re Free AGAIN!”
(Victory cry of the Texas secessionist movement, circa 2025)

Texas took Texas from Mexico at the battle of San Jacinto and established a republic. Not until 1845 did they become part of the US. Knowledge of history – or lack thereof – is part of the reason we’re falling so far behind in education.

Secession again? Didn’t we settle that about 150 years ago? (Better idea: Have 49 states secede from Massachusetts.)

Revision… Seven flags over Texas.

Of course, we’ll have to build a fence around it to prevent illegal immigration attempts by Texans, and Arizona Highway Patrolmen will be required to pull over any vehicle driven by someone with a ten-gallon hat.

To be frank, Texas will turn purple in a few generations since Hispanics are becoming a prominant minority there. The GOP really can’t appeal to them. They tried to connect to their religion and failed.

Feel free to secede Texas & don’t let the door hit you on the way out. I don’t care what party they’re from, all I know is I’ll never vote for a Texan who doesn’t want to teach fact asked science in their schools. Also trying to block minorities right to vote & impede women’s access to Planned Parenthood facilities is not cool.

Why don’t 50 states just divorce Washington, DC? Build a new capitol and government in Kansas.

New capitol and government in Kansas after shutting down DC? What a terrible idea! (BTW, I live in Kansas.)

Last time I was in Quintana Roo, I was told it was illegal for foreigners to own property in Mexico; long-term leases were all that was allowed.

Texas one year, California the next….

I would suggest Texas be split down the middle. 50% men on the right and 50% women on the left. Each gets to decide if it stays in the Union.

Study your history!
The USA never took Texas from Mexico. Texas fought against a Mexican dictator for independence. Texas later joined the USA with the provision that it could secede later if it should decide to do so.

I’ll help them pack.

Southwestern terrorities now part of the US were only in Mexican hands for about 17 years after their independence from Spain. Thanks for your revisionist history!!

Does all this mean if we returned to the map lines of 1843, we’d need a passport to get to San Francisco? (trick question..think it through before you circle “b”)

We bought Alaska from Russia, not Canada.
phoenixnyc over 11 years ago
I’m all for letting states secede…IF there’s also a mechanism to expel them from the Union. It’s like any other relationship: if you want to be able to walk away at will, you need to run the risk of being dumped to the curb without warning.

Oh yes Please. We take back the Alaska Panhandle. Texas has the money – it can do whatever it wants. If successful, I’m sure Canada and the rest of the Commonwealth will recognize the new State/Country.

If Texas took it’s 30 something electoral votes, we’d be very unlikely to ever have a Republican president, again. The same thing would happen in the House and Senate. With the Texans gone, we could have a functioning government again. If they took Florida with them, we would be in even better shape. When “Old Opps” threatened to secede I wrote my relatives in Houston and volunteered to come down and help them pack. So far, they haven’t indicated that they needed any help, but they still won’t go, and I’m getting impatient.
Diane Lee Premium Member over 11 years ago
The interesting side note for both Texas and Florida through, is it that in one or two generations, they will be minority white populations, which means that they won’t be electing Republicans either.
