Oh, yeah. Luann doesn’t know anything about the counseling internship because she wasn’t with them on the road trip. Wonder how she’ll react when she finds out that Delta and Bernice didn’t invite her along because she’s too dramatic.

Are counselors supposed to call the students they counsel “You dope!”? Of course, at Pitt they probably really should.

I dunno… I hope Bernice is properly motivated for such a career (assuming this is her career choice). Given her intelligence, I’d have thought differently. It takes a certain set of personality traits. A strong advocate for kids, lots of patience, thick skin, ability to deal with the “occupational hazards” of working with kids in confidential settings… and, although I’m not sure as to Bernice’s financial objectives, I’d imagine the job pays quite a bit less than I’m sure she could earn with her intelligence (consider “school shrink” if you want to go that way).

Given how Bernice is treating her BFF Lu these days, I just don’t see Bernice in the guidance counselor role.

I just saw your Sept. 8th comic strip and it struck me as rude and in no way funny. I’m not a comic and can do better than that. Your comment about “subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing” is unflattering. What a childish humor you have. I happen to be one of those that rely on captioning/subtitles.

Several thoughts bases on posts I’ve seen:1) Bernice and Delta drove to a district interview site to interview for a number of jobs that would become available in the state.2) Bernice was assigned to Phelps because it was close to her home and she still needs to attend high school while doing this job.3) Bernice is getting a “feel for the job” to help her determine if she wants to major in that field while in college. She will not be observing Ms. Phelps during sensitive counselling sessions. If she does observe, it will be because Phelps thinks it’s OK and the student says he/she approves. Bernice will be told that anything she hears cannot be disclosed to anybody else unless specific permission is given. That will be part of getting a “feel for the job”.4) Part of what she’ll learn is proper attitudes that need to be developed to treat the person being counselled with sensitivity. She may still call her friends “dopes”, but will not refer to counselled persons by that term.5) It’s sorta “on the job training” or practice teaching and that’s why she’s doing it.

Two of my friends were high school counselors (till they went on to other careers), and both started out thinking that they were going to do a lot of career counseling. Maybe if there were more counselors per student, that could happen, but unfortunately, this is one of the areas where funding cuts are made. So counselors end up trying to help kids coming from abusive homes. or living with in homeless shelters with their parents and not able to find a place to do homework, or being bullied and feeling suicidal, etc. I have a lot of admiration for anyone who takes on this job, since I worked as a volunteer on a crisis switchboard for one term in college and had to give it up.

Joel, horsing around and calling your buddies names seems more like a teen guy thing than a teen girl thing. Admittedly, my nieces and nephews think I was in high school with Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, so things have probably changed since then — but, back in the day, if a teen girl called another girl a name, it wasn’t meant as a sign of affection.

Even living in castles has changed, though. Last week, cops pulled guns on Prince Andrew when he was walking in the garden of Queen Elizabeth’s palace, and demanded that he hold up his hands and lie face down on the ground while they searched him.

And congratulations to Seismic & [somebody else], who correctly identified the capital of Australia as Canberra. I’d always assumed it was Sydney or Melbourne, until I checked (while memorizing the worlds capitals, as a memory exercise).

Being intelligent and being sensible are not necessarily joint characteristics in a person.

Agreed, absolutely! But I’m not tying her “intelligence” to her choice to be a guidance counselor. As stated earlier, I believe it takes other personality traits. Intelligence… perhaps… to the extent of studying human psychology/behavior, but I think it also takes a very strong emotional desire to help people and, in particular, kids.

In Bernice’s case, being a counselor is a perfect career choice: she’d be able to pass judgement on a parade of students and not limit her pronouncements to only her ‘close’ friends.

What kind of “judgements,” though? It’s one thing to “assess” a student (and their issues) clinically and form a course of action in the student’s best interests. It’s another to allow one’s personal biases to influence that assessment/action plan. I get the feeling that Bern is just a bit too condescending in her (current) “assessment” of Lu and, thus, not a good fit for a GC.

Or did you mean that sarcastically? ;-)

Agreeing with the comments on Luann career objectives.

She mostly runs around doing projects she likes for people she wants to admire and like her. She has no real idea what she wants to do in life except for poorly formed abstractions and stereotypes. Is this Luann or Tiff I’m talking about?

The above forms a commonality that Tiff and Luann share. While others are growing and moving on, they are stuck in a suspended animation.

They are the yin and the yang around those common traits they share. Tiff runs around making things happen. Luann “happens” around certain things. Assertive versus passive. Passionate versus lethargic. In the summer drama camp arc, in the effort to further solidify the characters of Tiff and Quill, Evans defines Luann by omission. The questions begged: why didn’t she get in, why didn’t she follow up or try, why didn’t she volunteer with her ace-in-the-hole insider Gunther. Meanwhile, one way or the other, Tiff is there.

This lack of definition and weaknesses of each keeps us loving (or hating) our dynamic duo. But I have patience – I’ll wait for when Luann casts off the hidden insecurities that hold her back and look for a self-realized redemption of Tiffany so she can achieve her dreams however ill-formed they may be.

My senior year was not happy. I was too young to be an adult, but too old to be a kid. The boys still looked immature, and pimply. This is going to be a lonnnng senior year with Luann. I am ready to move her on in life. I suppose she could be a cheerleader, to get some zest. Oh, there’s the wedding coming up. That’ll be interesting.Sighhh, I miss Quill.

No, but since the whole point of being an intern is to be a trainee and learn how to do the job, one big rule for being a counselor is not to call the students “dopes”. She’s blowing the very first lesson.
