Frazz: Nice day! Mrs. Olsen: Bah! It's October. Frazz: But it is nice. Mrs. Olsen: And then comes November, and then December. Frazz: I think I see what you're getting at. Mrs. Olsen: I never trust a month that ends in "brr."
Here in SoCal those “brr” months are also the first half of the Santa Ana winds season. So every couple of weeks we go from chilly to miserably hot and windy within the space of a few hours, usually with at least one brush fire accompanying it. We’ve got one forecast for this weekend—Sat and Sun in the high eighties. OK if you’re lolling on the patio, but lousy for mowing the lawn and digging in the garden. Well, since I work for the government (civilian contractor) I probably won’t be working this week, so maybe I can get some outdoor work done while it’s still cool. It’s a good thing I do the work myself, because with no paycheck coming in, I sure can’t hire anyone.
I don’t like the cold, but I like the heat even less. I tolerate the cold much better than most people. I keep the heat of the house just above freezing all winter long just so the pipes don’t freeze. I survive. And if suffering a little builds character (old C&H readers will remember this), I’m definitely a character!
Where do these people live? When I lived in New England, all the seasons were fine. Since I moved to the Washington DC area (about 40 years ago), I’ve much preferred the “brr” months (and the few that follow) to the horrible hot and humid rest of the year!
Move to Southern California! No, please don’t, we have enough people. But it’s not uncommon here to have a 90-degree day followed two or three days later by a 60-degree day, all year round. Especially in the fall.
Rick Smith. Yes, cold can be defended against, and you can still go outside….Hot humid air turns you into a hostage, either in a building or a car…No thank you…
GoBlu, welcome back in advance….I know what it’s like, I live in Paw Paw, but on Spring Break, instead of going down south somewhere, I usually go to Marquette….Talk about people thinking you’re crazy….When the ask me why, I tell them there is still four feet of snow back in the woods…The looks they give then are priceless…Went across the Cut River Bridge on April 2nd, on the way to Marquette..no snow on the ground. Staid in Marquette for a while. Snow shoed around….On the way back home, April 6th, and under the Cut River bridge, 15 inches of snow,….I snowshoed down, snowshoed up…

Amen. And I’m not overly fond of the 4 months after that!

The “ary” months aren’t too comfortable, either.

There are pros and cons of both and even middle ground doesn’t completely satisfy. When push comes to shove it’s just nice to be able to have a home!

Around here they say, “If you don’t like the Pennsylvania weather, wait five minutes; it’ll change.”

Ugh. Here in central Europe we are supposed to get a long, cold winter that will last well into March.

I prefer cold over hot. You can always put something else on, but you can only take so much off!
