“Mission accomplished, dearest. I distracted the nuisance and it’s safe for you to come out.”.And those who root for Leslie can rejoice, for he has won over the evil agressor, Knute. Now for complete fulfillment, all we need is to haul K & C off in a squad car.
Knute the bully? Really? He was just trying to hold him back from intruding on someone’s privacy. Who was the one responding with a punch to the gut? And I don’t buy the “defense” excuse…
Still, Les would be wise [make a nice change] to pi$$ and then pi$$ off; and make NO attempt to lay a move on Crystal,if he knows what’s good for him….
Knute should have been standing in front of the restroom door when Les approached. It’s a little less dangerous to try to blockade the door with explanation – than to grab a guy from behind. Les could have really trashed Knute, claiming self defense.
I had a feeling something like this was going to occur; Les’ facial expression from yesterday was not one of panic, but more along the lines of “you’ve GOT to be kidding me!”Now, Knute can get on with The Better Part of Valor.
I’m with seismic-2 on this one. Knute just physically assaulted Les because Les decided he was going to go to the bathroom in the men’s room regardless of whether there was a woman in there or not. Maybe what Les did is not the epitome of gentlemanliness, but he was well within his rights and he was certainly within his rights to defend himself when Knute assaulted him.
Oh come on guys, we all know that Les IS a Bully and he assaults women who do not want his attention…remember Rosa? He always seems to do as he pleases with out regard for the feelings of others. He really needs to meet his match. I hope it is Ox and that Ox won’t get into trouble for it.
Dang ! I can’t believe that common courtesy is so lacking in some of these posts. I see this world is so full of rude people. I agree with Goodheart. It wouldn’t have hurt Les to be a gentleman and wait a couple minutes…. and I am sure there are other restrooms. Anyway, a better response from Knute would have been to just announce a warning to Crystal instead of getting physical with Les.
We have some bullies, former bullies, or friends of bullies commenting tonight. Knute has had the wind knocked out of him, but should recover quickly. Maybe Crystal will emerge and, when Leslie “Lester the Molester” makes a grab at her, kick him where it will hurt the most. Or maybe Oxford will wander in, to fulfil his assigned fate and subdue the bully.I suppose that will make some people here unhappy.
Leslie is now free to do whatever he intended, but he is not going anywhere near Crystal. He just wanted to use the bathroom. I like Knute but he was totally wrong here.
Crystal can hear all of the conversation between Knute and Les. She will probably not think Knute was wise to assault Les for just being in the bathroom. Les never did anything to Crystal. She seems like she can take care of herself pretty well.
Knute warned Les while they were outside. Les ignored the warning (he COULD have gone to a different men’s room)
Les ALSO said “Hm! Should be fun!” — a threat.Les ALSO said “I don’t care what you told me doofus” — another threat. There’s no evidence that he was going to ignore Crystal, given his statements. We can’t prove whether or not he was going to ignore her but his words indicated that he intended to “have some fun” and certainly didn’t care what Knute said.
Thus, Les was asserting his power over everyone else involved. I.e., a bully.
A gentleman would have cared if there was a gal in the restroom. And not have used it.This guy is shaping up to be a perpetual violent criminal who cares nothing about others. Just cares about his own desires and wants. A possible rapist.
HEY! Where Ya Going Needle-Nose?Thought Ya Said You Had to Use the Bathroom?
And a Tip to Knute: The Next Time (And There Will Be a NEXT Time) You DEAL with This A**Hat, a little Ammonia Based Cleaning Product to His eyes will work wonders.THEN While He’s Screaming in Pain, Punch Him in the (A-Hem) “Jewels” while Yelling “NO!!!”
Uh? Wattaya MEAN “Over The Top”??? They tell the Ladies this “Self Defense” Stuff All the Time!
Knute was not the bully here. He asked Les to wait but Les did not just ignore him, he made a clear statement of intent with “ha,should be fun”. And when told again to wait Les rudely dismissed Knute and insulted him. What I’d like to know is how Les broke the hold, the way Knute had him rapped up he should have been able to back Les out of the bathroom with ease.
School leadership nowdays is blind to all but its own rules. If word of this gets out to the admins then both Knute and Les will get suspended. There is no comon sense in school leadership anymore just blind obedience to Zero Tolerance. Forget chivilary, forget he attacked me first, both will be suspended, and for that matter so might Crystal for being in the wrong bathroom.
-In conclusion, Knute and Crystal took over the men’s bathroom for selfish reasons -Please tell me what planet you live on that defines the need to use a restroom as a ‘selfish’ need. On your planet, are you expected to simply drop trou and make a deposit in front of everyone, or what?
Interestingly, today’s ‘Nancy’ strip shows Sluggo walking his dog, and the dog obviously wants privacy. Sluggo, at least, makes the effort to act as a gentleman…
Les is not heading for the door unless there are two doors. So, when he has drained the ole lizard and Cristal has opened the stall door…we have the prospect of a perfect storm.
Knute had a good grip on Leslie because Leslie didn’t act in a respectable manner upon learning that Crystal was using the boys’ restroom. Knute was protecting his girl. Knute, you need to do some upper body exercises, but right now just pray for Ox to the rescue.
Leslie’s response was, “HM. Should be fun.” How is a guy suppose to react when it concerns his girlfriend? Leslie’s response indicated he had more on his mind than going to the bathroom.
The unfavorable things said about Leslie are rooted in his history of violence toward women.Even when innocent, folks view actions through the filtered lens of past deeds..TJ and Dirk face the same problem.
A person is not a bully if he or she tries to help someone else in time of need. A bully is one who is HABITUALLY cruel to those who are weaker. Knute does not make a habit of cruelty, did not act here out of cruelty and did not act against someone here who is weaker.
“t appears that he…is still heading for the urinals.”Hard to say; Evans keeps moving the plumbing around. In Monday’s strip, the urinals were next to the door, in a previous take on on Knute’s cleaning festishhttp://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y463/ertepix/lu120409_zps1f678263.gifthe sinks are next to the door.Les is still moving away from the door as it’s been in both cases, so his own “relief” mission must still be a “go”.
You don’t really have to go too deep to reach the coward in every bully.(This why Superdooperman has to be careful, he is so much stronger than the bad guys that even the gentlest restraint is bordering on bullying.)
Yesterday, when he was told there was a girl using the restroom — a girl very possibly in some state of undress, very possibly in a vulnerable situation — states, “Hm! This should be fun!”
This Les, who Knute very possibly knows was physically aggressive and threatening to another female friend under even less compromising circumstances.
Whether Crystal is right or wrong in using the boys’ bathroom is completely irrelevant to Knute’s reaction.
The potential threat to Crystal’s safety is entirely plausible. You don’t wait until an assault takes place to take action, you intervene to prevent a possible assault.
And of course Les is going about his business now, he’s been interrupted and now there’s a witness; that’s too high a threshold of risk for a bully like Les.
Also – no other girl has ever been seen crashing the boys room. They all wait to use the girls’.If they can wait their turn, why can’t Crystal? What makes her so privileged?
Propriety”?Knute spent the first strip of this arc being “weird” by standing outside the stall, then the facility door talking to Crystal while she tinkled/texted, and now K is going to enforce “propriety” on everyone else?
One simple way to be left alone is with isolating comments such as, “Wow, look at the size of that! I hope it doesn’t clog the plumbing. I must be ten pounds lighter. What did I eat that was purple anyway? Is that blood? That must be what they mean about a ‘power dump’. Whoa, here comes another one. Where’s the paper????”
Suppose a girl sees Crystal enter the boys’ room thinks, “hmm..that’s a good idea,” leaves the line at the girls’ door and asks Knute can she use it. Chivalrous Knute allows her in.Two or three more girls see the action and decide that they aren’t going to wait either. Knute allows them in.
Gunther comes along with the cafeteria two-step and Knute blocks the entrance. “Sorry. There’s girls in there.” “How did they get in there? That’s a boys’ room!”“I let them in. You’re going to have to wait.”Meanwhile, more girls are steadily going in and out of the boys’ room. You say this can’t happen? Why not? If you allow one girl in, more are going to see it and come in too.Perhaps there should be more facilities for the girls. But crashing the boys’ restrooms is asking for trouble, as we’ve just seen.
The proper response from Leslie could have been, “Sorry, when ya gotta go, you gotta go.” Instead his response of “Should be fun,” sparked an ire and concern for at least one of the two parties who are doing something they have no business doing unless it is a VERY immediate emergency. When you come right down to it, there are no rights going on here, just wrongs.
I used to work out of a Magnet High School, and one afternoon, after dismissal, I heard a girl giggling in the boy’s restroom (one stall / one urinal).I went to check it out, and there were a couple of boys standing around, backs to the mirror who were immediately shocked to see me.Inside the stall was a girl and another boy who was instructing her on how to draw graffiti on the walls (we’d had a spat of this nonsense for the previous week, and the janitors, amongst others, were tired of it).I commented, “very nice”, took the permanent marker from her hand and her by the elbow of her upraised hand, informing the boys that “if (they had) the cojones” to follow us, and I led her off down the hall stairs to the school office. The boys all chickened out, she got suspended, she gave them up.
We didn’t have a graffiti problem again for a loooong time after that.
> maybe there’s more than one restroom? Our high school had a couple, and it was by no means a large school.>Then why didn’t Crystal go to one of the other ladies’ rooms, instead of taking over an entire men’s room for herself?
- she doesn’t want to wait in a line. That’s practically the definition of selfish and inconsiderate.-Crystal didn’t take a restroom for herself; she asked Knute to keep a lookout. That can be either to let her know someone is coming, or to politely ask someone if they can wait a minute till she’s out. When did asking someone to wait a minute become ‘the definition of selfish and inconsiderate’?-Meanwhile, as a person who has to wear an ostomy bag, I am admittedly over sensitive to the lack of available facilities for all people. But your reaction to this is pushing too many of my buttons. -So here is my sweet little wish for you: That which you allow to be done to others, may it be done to you. May you have a condition that creates an urgent need for whatever reason, and may you be denied access to facilities and condemned as selfish and inconsiderate because you ’don’t want to wait in line’.
“The key words being “could have”. Both you and sjsczurek used them. So, ti could have gone that way or the other way, meaning that it’s also possible that they couldn’t wait.”
That is exactly what I’m saying. If Crystal couldn’t be expected to wait, why the assumption that Leslie could be expected to wait?
Yet so many here are ever so ready to assert that Les should have been able to hold his sphincter in deference to Crystal.Unisex bathrooms are no big deal and quite “a la mode” per goths I’ve known since the 1980’s.What’s Crystal’s problem?
I dig Crystal, but there’s no way she could take out Les unless she got the drop on him from behind with a lead pipe. If he let her strike him and didn’t retaliate, he’s more of a gentleman than people give him credit for.
Looks like Knute might get away with no suspension here, and no trip to the hospital (hopefully; still to be seen). Les is not going to molest Crystal, so no report there. Les is certainly not going to report this, since he’d be suspended, too. What’s left to be seen is how Crystal treats Knute now. Since he’s obviously thrown up, this won’t be the magic moment when we get to see Crystal finally—FINALLY—give the lad a kiss. Sigh.
It really is ironic. Crystal and Knute are my two favorite characters in the strip, and I have to spend thousands of bytes calling them out on their boorish behavior.
I’d say the only person who could know how badly Crystal needed to “go” would be none other than Crystal herself. We aren’t in possession of her corporeal body, we are merely observers.”<I could and will say the exact same thing about Leslie. Knute had no right to stop him.
“People keep talking about perceived “rights” and the law, instead of what IS right and decent in treating each other.”<What’s right and decent is allowing a fellow to use the facilities that is designated for his use.
-Yeah, I was kind of referring to that song with my answer. But I was also talking about today’s rules in schools, and they are a lot stricter than back when I was in school. (My HS graduation was 1967…)
(Funny how a comic strip has generated such passionate / vigorous discussion!)
@seismic-2 @ReallyBad
Sorry folks, you’re stretching it.1) Crystal explicitly said she could not go elsewhere and really had to go.2) We have zero evidence that Leslie had no alternatives3) Whatever happened to patience?
It is incredibly common for a restroom to be briefly unavailable, for cleaning or whatever. Knute informed Leslie that it was unavailable — briefly, not for a long time “she’ll be done in a sec.”
By your logic, Leslie’s “right” to barge in overrides anything — full bathroom, being cleaned, girl in there briefly, whatever. Sorry, that doesn’t fly.
Leslie should have had the patience to wait a sec. Clearly he had no intention of doing so. He explicitly was ignoring everything else going on and just arrogantly wanted to Have It His Way.
Les did not doing anything wrong in this case. He made a flippant remark about being in the same bathroom as a girl. The girl chose to go in the boy’s bathroom. Les never made any threat towards Crystal. If the girls bathroom was so busy why wouldn’t the boys be busy too? Crystal certainly could NOT expect to have complete privacy for 3 or 4 minutes. If Crystal was allowed to use the boys bathroom, then Les should be allowed to use the girls bathroom since he obviously had to go too. Why would Crystal be more special than Les?
I see a storyline which lasts for awhile on how they (Luann and co.) seek revenge on Leslie in a way that makes no sense at all to regular people. ^So…. they build a “Rube Goldberg Device”?…. just concoct a “Rube Goldberg Plot”?…if so, I hear that Inspector Gadget is retired…..
ICBW, but I don’t think Editman was thinking that women’s rooms would have urinals. I think he was just trying to call Crystal a… “girl that’s so tough, she could go, standing up”…. either that, or maybe he was calling her a bit more than a “dudette”… – (Honestly, though.. from past strips, she is more female than some give her credit for… she’s that kind that will go crazy buying nail polish, but never cry over breaking a nail…)
Leave Ox out of this. You do not always have a hero arrive to save the day. This is a problem for Knute and Crystal. Let Knute and Crystal handle it.^For all intents and purposes, it probably has already been handled… Les was probably intent on having to go, and having punched Knute, could have proceeded to go, wash (hopefully!) and then… go… the hit was probably just to say: “Knock it off! I’m not interested in anything but going, right now!” (well, maybe not in those exact words)… – And once he went, that will be that… maybe someone else will enter the stall, or maybe Knute will stand guard outside once more, “warn” somebody else for one more “gag”, and then before you know it, Saturday will come, and Crystal will finally emerge and come out and say" “Did anything happen outside (the actual door to the bathroom) while I was in there?”….at which point, Knute will say something.. Knute-like…
There are also bathrooms with two different entrance/exit doors… again, some stadiums and malls… the airport near where I live have some like this, with two entrance/exits, for convenience….
Somewhere, dogs that can read (Scooby, IDK, maybe some others?) are probably looking at this strip and laffffin!!!….laffin, laffin at us…. if they could type, they’d tell us how easy they have it at the hydrants, bushes, walls, etc…..
- I feel it is highly likely that Greg Evans will go to a “get revenge on Les” storyline-I really hope you’re wrong. I’m hoping for a totally different arc after this one; I for one have had enough of Les for a lifetime….
“…he is leaving after gut punching Knute.”Not leaving (door’s the other direction, past K), going to finish his restroom business. If this were not a family strip, he might have done it on Knute’s head to prove he had been in need.
The old ones, no….. I live in an area where if you go into the city, there are more of the older school buildings that go through that age old “story” of “needs more money to renovate”… – However, some newer ones do get built, once in a while, and I would guess that with the stroke of a pencil, pen and ink, that Pitts could possibly be “renovated” when we’re not looking or whenever Greg “visits” it during his brainstorming….
At the beginning of the week, we weren’t expecting to be treated to an installment of “As The Bowl Water Churns”… so, I don’t think we can safely assume (at least for a 100% certainty) where this whole thing is going… that’s why I left room for the possibility of going through this with maybe one other character to take it to the end of the week…. Crystal confronting Les could happen, too, but at this point, we got the “rope a dope” from Greg this week (as far as this week’s strips have been concerned)…
I am 51 years old. In my years of grade school, high school, college and after college; I have seen many, many occasions where women would raid the men’s restroom if the women’s restroom was unavailable. I do not know how you made it to 59 years never seeing this ever.
-What can I say? I just asked my son, who is 25 years old, and is a corrections officer. He’s never seen women crash a men’s room either. I asked him, “never?”“Ever,” he said.I guess you and I live in different worlds.
WOW, Knute & Leslie are getting a LOT of comments. Didn’t get to read them yesterday & doesn’t look promising today. I keep thinking I’ll catch up, but it’s a losing battle…
Once, on a 6hr bus trip, we were allowed a “rest stop” at one of the stations. I went to use the “men’s room,” and realized that I was the only person in the room, with one exception. Someone was in the stall, next to the urinals.
30-60 seconds later, out came the young girl I had been seated next to (never met her before). She had done a “Crystal” by herself (no Knute involved). Very apologetic but, in the end, it didn’t matter as we were both ‘fully dressed" and “closed up” by the time we’d encountered each other.
They did use Roman numerals. I remember one over Auburn at the time calliny it Title X when he was talking about IX (Nine). They were told they had to treat men and women the same. At the time they locked up the innocent girls to protect their virtue but let the boys roam freely. They announced they were going to lock up Magnolia Hall the boys.Nobody griped. They just moved out.The money from Magnolia Hall was paying for the far better dormitories the wimmin got.Love of money outweighed virtue and all were released to run wild. (I didn’t care, I was living off campus anyway.)
Backing WAY up the line:In one, some super powered aliens came to take away Superdoopergirls powers because she had hilled a nonsentient space beast ere it ate Earth.Their code of ethics forbade killing ANY creature. She pointed out they had killed millions of bacteria when they struck a march or something. She thought they would leave her alone but instead, they suicided...Then there was another in which a mummy lady was resurrected and asked Big S to hug her tighter until her ribs broke, leaving him to think he had killed her and making him stop saving the world.10¢ well spent
“And you could have kept Atomic and gone with Dawg or Hog or — best of all — Frog, leap on THAT one next time.”<D’oh! “Dawg” would have been perfect! Especially since I live in Georgia.Although, to tell you the truth, I am more of a Tech fan.
Suppose it had been Ox, not Leslie, who needed to use the restroom when Crystal was in there. (Maybe he ate through the entire menu at both Weenie World and Burger Box.) Would Knute have kept him out of the restroom, hopping from leg to leg in severe discomfort ? When Ox said, “Gotta go, NOW!” and went in the door, would Knute have tried to choke him? Or should Ox have relieved himself of the remnants of 4 2-liter bottles of Coke all over the floor while still out in the hall? Or should he have emptied his bladder all over Knute instead?
> but you’re ignoring that Les did NOT have to urgently go.>How do you know that? He didn’t tell Knute “I have to got!” because, as he said, he didn’t think Knute had any business keeping him out. There is no reason to assume that Leslie’s need to use the restroom was any less than Crystal’s. It could have been greater than hers. If so, what then?
Leslie’s remark “Should be fun!” isn’t really a threat. It could mean it will be zany when Crystal opens her stall to come out and then sees Leslie using the urinal. However, if she’s going to use the men’s room, that’s exactly what she ought to expect. She has no reasonable expectation to make a public restroom her own private one.
A number for ReallyBad but no telling who it’ll say?6.28319Less than that and a wait of 29 seconds (yet ANOTHER number) is not unreasonable, lest he forever be considered a Number Two for disrespect of a Ten
Is this going to be the beginning of the end for Knute and Crystal, or something that will draw them closer together? The couple-relationships among the kids are all being stressed. Will they or won’t they survive high school? Can’t see Knute and Crystal’s pseudo-relationship continuing, unless they both go to (or stay in) the same place. Even then, Knute appears to be firmly in the friend zone and it’s notoriously hard to move out of that. However, Luannverse doesn’t resemble reality very often, so who knows? Maybe Crystal will give Knute a break now.
*
Me, I just want to see them kiss. Just once, is that asking too much?
Not haven’t posted until now, I don’t know if this has been mentioned before (probably has, but here is my take on things): Knute should have realized Les was going to defend himself…even though Knute looks like he was in a world of hurt, what did he expect to happen? Sure, I feel his pain, but what he did had an For Every Action There is an Equal Reaction feel to it. Crystal is still none the wiser as to what actually went on…she initiated the whole thing and I sure hope she appreciates what Knute tried to do for her… ;)
Except that Dirk had a kid in a sling, his new wife and was saying that he didn’t want anything to do with Toni, anymore, when they bumped into each other at the store… – Oh, yeah… he also said that he was taking classes and therapy…. – I’ve known some similar to his case, in real life.. changed a lot from school and young adulthood…
I didn’t say anything about Ox beating up on Les — and I suspect he wouldn’t have to. It seems to me that Ox has handled these situations without violence in the comic before. In fact, I think the whole idea of Ox is that situations can be handled without violence.

@seismic-2: you’ve reinterpreted the events.

A person is not a bully if he or she tries to help someone else in time of need. A bully is one who is HABITUALLY cruel to those who are weaker. Knute does not make a habit of cruelty, did not act here out of cruelty and did not act against someone here who is weaker.

David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace almost 11 years ago
One simple way to be left alone is with isolating comments such as, “Wow, look at the size of that! I hope it doesn’t clog the plumbing. I must be ten pounds lighter. What did I eat that was purple anyway? Is that blood? That must be what they mean about a ‘power dump’. Whoa, here comes another one. Where’s the paper????”
atomicdog almost 11 years ago
Willow Mt Lyon almost 11 years ago

Argy.Bargy2 almost 11 years ago

Sigh.

Not a good way to go through life.
locake almost 11 years ago
Les did not doing anything wrong in this case. He made a flippant remark about being in the same bathroom as a girl. The girl chose to go in the boy’s bathroom. Les never made any threat towards Crystal. If the girls bathroom was so busy why wouldn’t the boys be busy too? Crystal certainly could NOT expect to have complete privacy for 3 or 4 minutes. If Crystal was allowed to use the boys bathroom, then Les should be allowed to use the girls bathroom since he obviously had to go too. Why would Crystal be more special than Les?

Knute-like…

Leslie’s remark “Should be fun!” isn’t really a threat. It could mean it will be zany when Crystal opens her stall to come out and then sees Leslie using the urinal.
