Transcript:
Gene: Nobody was criticizing you! Mary Lou: Oh, yes you were! I'm the mother! I'm the woman! I'm supposed to do it all! Mary Lou: If it's difficult balancing work and home, tough! It's all my fault! Pop: We were talking about the way things are! Pop: The hospitality trade is demanding! It can be very difficult for young families! Mary Lou: Are we just now getting around to finding that out?

No matter how much we think society has changed, she is right; few men take as much responsibility both at work and at home as the working mom. Note: working dad is not a commonly used term. She’s justifiably tired and no doubt needs a break before she breaks down.

Why is it that when a woman is in a bad mood, it’s “she’s pregnant” or “she’s PMSing”? Ever thought that it’s okay for a woman to have a bad day? After all, a man can have a bad day, why not a woman?
And Flossie is right, you never hear the term “working dad”. It’s always “working mom”. Even if the woman isn’t working outside the home, believe it or not guys, SHE IS WORKING. Especially if there are small children around. Cooking, cleaning, grocery, errands, taking care of sick kids, helping with homework, laundry, etc. The list and work is always on going.

No, ML’s point is valid and shouldn’t be blamed on the state of her plumbing. And touché, ML.

It’s true a woman’s work is never done. Especially when one is a mother.

You wanted it all and you got it. Now deal with it (without the attitude, please).

“Mary Lou, I thought you would have already noticed and accepted the situation. You’re always telling me to not tell you the things you already know. I can’t tell you don’t know until you complain.NONETHELESS, I WAS WRONG AND YOU ARE RIGHT. PLEASE FORGIVE ME”
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace almost 11 years ago
“She is putting that on herself, nobody else is.’-True. The heaviest burdens are those we give ourselves.

…are you now saying that she is ‘incontrolably’ rude? So, if she feels that they are criticizing her, standing up for herself is ‘incontrolably’ rude? Being a doormat is preferable? It is Mary Lou’s child. Her father is referring to his grandchild as a “poor kid” and Gene is saying Meg hardly knows where her home is, which is an outrageous exaggeration…they can go all wide-eyed and innocent, but it sounds like criticism to me (and no, I never had any kids, so i’m not projecting here – i am trying to be objective)…

davemchine, I think you’re on to something there….
Varnes almost 11 years ago
davemchine, I think you’re on to something there….How much do you want to bet he pays for both of them to go to school? And I bet he sends her to business school, too… I think Gus is smart enough to know that a modern business, even a restaurant/resort, needs somebody running it who has a handle on what it all means…taxes, social security, on line reservations,…social psychology, organizational an interpersonal relations, training techniques…Best practices..Anybody who thinks you can’t learn more about what you already know well, is just a silly person….And I think all the adults realize that the kids have proven themselves to be hard and dependable workers….Give ‘em a break. The money won’t be wasted on these too…Send them off to school…

" But a father would have been better."-And it’s obvious either his absence or the presence of his genes did much damage.Taking that into consideration, you’ve done relatively well.

“The problem was that men didn’t step up to shoulder the load at home. So it was male chauvinism still at work.”.Or perhaps, the problem is people outside the home deciding how the people inside the home are supposed to be living their lives. That happens a lot.It is obvious Mary Lou is worried about what others think even when they aren’t thinking it.-I’ve seen plenty of women who could not think of having men do what they decided was THEIR domain. They treated every effort to help shoulder the load as an implied insult.

Thanks for making us think, Jimmy Johnson. Apparently this pushed a few buttons. Unfortunately, the commentary is getting a little heated and I don’t think anyone has changed his/her mind. Maybe in another 300 years…

Again— maybe it’s time for them to think of finding other ways of supporting themselves?…
