Les: "Just askin' a girl to the prom. That a crime?"
Gunther: "When it's MY girl, YES!!"
Les: "So you already asked her, huh?"
Gunther: "I---"
Les: "Guess not"
Gunther: "IT'S 2 MONTHS AWAY!!"
“♪…Well… I guess he’d say… it was only 2 months away!…♪” – Is this another case of Gunther doing “the Safety Dance”?… – Is Rosa anxious to say: “I told you so!” when it comes to taking the initiative?… – Did Les actually have a point?… – Does anybody have change for a $5?…..
“Les’ Side Story”“A Deterred Gent ( A Fab Wreck Softens Her)”“Custard’s Frozen Stand”“The Early Worm Catches the Love Birds”or “♪….It Takes Two Months, Baby! It Takes Two…♪”
“Always be proactive, not reactive…” And it does well for you, Gunther, to remember it takes TIME for a young woman to prepare for a prom!!! Especially when it comes to picking out a dress…and a date…for the SENIOR prom… ;)
“Brought to you” by…Plotz’ soup.. “Thick, heavy and full ofsurprises!… For a limited time, find 24 Carrot rings inside, and cash them in for a giant, sweet Date!”… – Time detergent…. “Yeah, you’ll hurry up and do your laundry, now!…” – and by…Lolly and Pop’s Candy Shop… “Buy one can of Plotz’ soup, get a box of Amminal Crackers for free!”…
For God’s sake Gunther – Learn to lie! If Gunther said, “Yes, I asked her to the Prom,” of course Rosa would have backed him. Gunth, whaddya gonna do when you’re married and your wife asks you, “Is my $@! too big?”… BTW, Greg – No real world stories – like both Rosa & Crystal wind up going for Les… Comics are much better than the real world…
That scared look again. . . Nothing ventured, nothing gained, Gunther. Act now or helplessly watch Rosa go off with Les or some other guy—and you’ll have no right to complain.
Am I the only one who thinks Leslie is going to turn out to be a pretty decent character, but just has never been taught how to behave before? Maybe being raised by an abusive, alcoholic father or something.
And on top of that, the whole tux rental and gown arrangements, any transportation that needs to be reserved and school prom committee decorations, etc… it really does need this far in advance, sometimes!…
howtheduck,Humans are possessive. It’s not a matter of sexism since both genders are rhat way.my guymy girlmy seatmy countrymy schoolmy partymy churchmy moneyIt would be silly to pretend otherwise.
Amazing that Leslie is calm, logical and mature. Rosa goes from "I’m listening " in the first panel to “Yeah, Gunther” in the second panel, to Maybe Les isn’t so bad and Gunther is hopeless in the third panel. Or maybe she will say yes to Les to teach Gunther a lesson.
Can’t believe one moment she is enthralled with manly Gunther who stands up for her and now she is ……..
(Of course, I can’t see that there is any way Rosa would have anything to do with that Knox creep. But she might use him very successfully as a puppet.)
Dave53,Just so you’re not green with envy. There is another David Green on NPR, but I’m not jealous of him using my name. (Not that he won’t also become a George, come the revolution and my usurpation of power.)
And Bond said to Moneypenny, “I am to eliminate all free radicals.”.To which she responded, “Oh, DO be careful, James.”.Maybe he can eliminate the bills, too.
Don’t look at us for sympathy, Gunther (panel 3). Rosa now expects you to do the Right Thing, at once. You do know what the Right Thing is, don’t you?Or else, Les wins.
-today’s teenage girl will expect her boyfriend to ask her to the prom -I guarantee you that yesterday’s teenage girl expects to be asked to a prom, too. The idea that when teens are dating, it’s implied that they will go to a prom is like saying that when two twentysomethings have been dating, there doesn’t have to be a marriage proposal because it’s ‘implied’.
Sheesh!!! Imagine how happy parents would be about spending an arm and a leg on a prom dress, and the day of the prom, the ‘date’ doesn’t show up….
If Rosa accepts Leslie’s offer, they deserve each other. Girls talk about proms months ahead with their boyfriends, so I don’t think Rosa cares if she and Gunther are still together in two months from now.
howthe,I’ve heard it.It is silly in context, but I’ve heard it.Just as when someone says, “My country,” they are not claiming ownership but being part of, linked inextricably to that country. Those who equate it with “my dog” or “my slave” are usually just being silly..Admittedly, some can’t make the distinction but Gunther has never acted as if he is one of them.(Rosa shows some tendencies along those lines with how she took control over Gunther, but I shall give her the benefit of the doubt.)
joel,Because you had “an understanding” and understood your social set-up.Rosa and Gunther don’t fully understand each other yet..Misunderstandings make much misery
Prom-posals are like marriage proposals…. In my day, (1950,s) just dating would call for an invitation well in advance. If you were “going steady” all dances were presumed a done deal. Asking someone’s steady out was never never done.
Yeah, would be nice seeing silver pieces, and a few of those liberty coins, and not just the pictures in the book…. – It’d be nice too if one had a steel penny (just for the sake of interest), or to run across an actual 19th century “half-dime”!…
Do either one of these guys even know her name? They both treat her like she is an inanimate object, like a possession. Rosa could do so much better than these males.
Gunther isn’t necessarily taking any steps backward, at this point… it could be that he’s made small strides forward, as Rosa was proud to relate to Crystal and Knute…. (remember his reaction when Les “Knox” the books out of her hand?) it could be just a natural “testing of his metal”, or the “forced” testing possibly, at Les’ hands…. Les’ proposition is just making Gunther seem foolish at the moment… but again, remember that as of Monday’s strip, all seemed to be looking a “bit” forward in the progress department…
Plus, I was trying to fit in something “in memoriam” to Ms. Temple, and it all seemed to tie in, with a plot thickening here, and her beloved numbers/movies “Animal Crackers” and “Good Ship…”
If it’s getting to be like counterfeit money, you can always do something that’s your own personal touch, an “unseen” seal of your approval, if you will….
I haven’t seen a US$2 bill for some time. As it have a picture of Thomas Jefferson on it, I guess, under the Canadian rule, it would be called a “Jeffie”.
Okay I was afraid of that, the covalent electrons are loose again.Iam, you can see ’twas intended for howtheduck, so signing off on my cantankerous Nook for today, might try a hard shut-down or just go back to my normal quiet self
-Apparently you’ve paid as much attention to the words that Rosa has used to explain her concerns about Gunther as you’ve paid to my words.-Rosa has been the one taking all the initiative in asking Gunther out. She has no reason to assume that she has a prom date with Gunther, unless she’s invited him. She hasn’t said that she’s invited him. -So who, exactly, is going to DISCUSS what? If Les hadn’t asked Rosa to the prom and she wanted to go (given Gunther’s past lack of initiative), Rosa would have had to invite him. -And why the diatribe on whether people can afford to mortgage a home for a limo or a dress; that was not my point at all….-Sigh. Oh,well, it’s as absurd for me to try to carry on a conversation with you as it is for me to believe that I’ll buy a winning lottery ticket. Thanks for letting me know what a poor use of my time it is to read your comments or try to talk to you….
Gutner’s version of Dirk?.. Hmm…something to think about… could be… – If we dissect it even further, Miguel, Derek and Stuart also had their exits, though not as “dignified” as Dirk was allowed. But all the same, they each did have their exit, eventually… maybe he could be Gunther’s version of Dirk….
Well, reform is nice, Da(u)e, if Les will reform, but we just don’t know, yet… Greg has said this is based on someone he knew….Every story has to have someone to be the “opposition”/fictional opponent…. – Rehabilitation in society is the ultimate hope, but we’ll just have to wait and see what’s up with this week…
howtheduck,“Man up” thereby establishing society’s expectations of what a REAL MAN is like. Those who don’t meet the standard often overcompensate and/or commit suicide..It’s a small price to pay to keep people in line, as long as someone ELSE pays the price.
howtheduck,Not that odd, Rosa didn’t grow up through the women’s liberation movement, so much older social expectations may be her strongest standard, whereas some here fight the war of the sexes at a hanky drop..Some are opposed to the expression “my girl” while others (?) proudly call themselves “taken” , thereby subject to being misunderstood as PROPERTY..WHAT A WORLD
“When you get right down to it, would there even be a Rosa/Gunther relationship without Leslie Knox?”I think they already Had a relationship (of sorts) before this mess. At any rate, I think that their relationship is on its way to becoming more solid than it already is… ;)
