Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for February 23, 2014
Transcript:
Marigold: *ahem* I am the very model of a modern magic unicorn. I've information magic, and I never wear a uniform. My entrances are heralded by trumpets and flugelhorn. I've eaten magic bagels and my horn can write in cuneiform! I make up for mt lack of hands with magic ingenuity. Manipulating objects with a startling acuity. I'm also rather stunning in a way that undeniable. To stare at me in wonder is completely justifiable. It's all true. Phoebe: I know.

It only counts as a rerun if you have seen it before…. :-) Sung to Pirates of Penzance?

Doesn’t your head looks a little small?

I miss Mr. Worf. I miss all the Star Trek shows, for that matter.

You can’t go wrong with Gilbert and Sullivan.

; ) If this is a rerun, I somehow missed it the first time around – spectacular! Marigold loves herself unconditionally, and I do too – she’s irresistible!!
WaitingMan almost 11 years ago
Gilbert, Sullivan and “cuneiform”, all in one comic strip. Truly awesome, Dana.

Truly a class act. I don’t mind reruns sometimes. It happens everywhere.

The entire week as been billed a reruns “now in color” because Dana is working on something special. Oddly, I missed all of them the first time. I thought I’d seen the entire strip.

(Sorry, can’t resist…) She says she never wears a uniform, but in the title panel she’s wearing a uniform. (Quickly runs away)
Tandembuzz almost 11 years ago
Okay, “I RARELY wear a uniform”…but a saddle-blanket and a hat do not a uniform make!
Apparently Marigold pronounces “cuneiform” as “kyoo-ni-form” rather than the proper “kyoo-neigh (couldn’t resist the pun)-i-form”. Easily remedied: “My horn can write cuneiform.”
But we’re all just splitting hairs here…it’s a lovely interpretation of one of the most entertaining (and pleasant to have stuck in one’s head) pieces of light opera!
caseva77 almost 11 years ago
Well done Marigold, it’s so crucial to keep that mouth open wide when singing opera.

It’s KYOO-ni-form in the original song, anyway. "Then I can write a washing-bill in Babylonic cuneiform And tell you ev’ry detail of Caractacus’s uniform.” In fact, KYOO-ni-form and kyoo-NI-form are the only pronunciations given in the Oxford English Dictionary—but the entry hasn’t been revised since 1893, so perhaps, when they get up to it in a few years, the other pronunciation will appear, as it seems to be preferred today. ======= “The Pirates of Penzance” /is/ an opera, even though relatively lightweight. Much of it is intentional opera parody; Mabel’s song, “Poor wand’ring one”, for example, is a wicked parody of “Sempre libera” (“Always free”) from Verdi’s “La Traviata” (“The Lost Woman”).

Very good, Marigold. However, I’m afraid that today’s edition of WUMO tells a very different story…

This is the strip that got me reading Heavenly Nostrils in the first place. :D has it been that long already?
kantuck-nadie almost 11 years ago
It’s a pleasure to see these strips, since Gocomics has had some serious issues in posting them regularly. A lot I haven’t seen yet.

re: the last panel: Only Marigold could manage to look modest while saying, “It’s all true!” Love Phoebe’s grin and this whole comic. Go, Dana!
andy herbert almost 11 years ago
with my damaged short-term memory, they’re all new to me.
