all depends on where they go with “college days”, they could do “first year of College” and have Brad and Toni married, than in one year (real time) suddenly Luann is a Junior at college, or have her as a sophomore, either way, Gunther and Rosa would have been in Peru either 1 year or two, and they could come back as a married couple, and both mature…………., Toni’s niece, Shannon would be older, and have her in a bigger role as the “new kid in school” stories from time to time

Sigh…I remember when your friends and relatives could accompany you to the boarding gate to say farewell. Even better, knowing that the minute you got off the plane your loved ones would be Right There with big smiles and balloons and such. Sigh. Our little children will never know this little bit of fun that we used to be able to have. Sigh. ;)

I have a very sleepy Irish Setter by the name of Katie who keeps bopping me to put her to bed! Since I’ve a good book to finish, guess I’ll take her…and me…upstairs. BTW, for those who are interested, I posted a picture of her on yesterday’s board near the bottom. ‘Nite all!-————————————————————————————-“No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefor never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." If you took the time to cook a meal for someone for a week, and they kept pointing out the lasagna noodles weren’t perfectly aligned, and that the they only tasted four cheeses instead of five, and the clean plates you served them on didn’t happen to match the tablecloth this time, but yet they were able to chew and digest the food, and you knew that the food you prepared wasn’t really bad, and the tablecloth served it’s purpose despite their protests, how would you feel? – Nothing wrong with noticing details, or pointing things out, as we all had been named “Luannalyzers” (according to the “construct-o -site”), but there’s a difference between pointing out the details (including perceived/actual mistakes), and taking a wrecking ball to the whole thing…

I think if some commenters had experienced more international airports, they might not be so quick to criticize the depiction of the Pitts Airport here. The sign for gate 46 looks as though it might well be an electronic board, changeable as needed. The Machu Picchu poster may well be only one of several adorning the wall leading that passageway, showing various touristic attractions served by flights from there. All the heavy screening might be further within. Or not. Condensing and focussing are necessary attributes of small-scale sequential narrative art.

As unrealistic airports aren’t really important to the story, I’d like to propose focusing on the more important part: They made it to the airport, and the couple goes off, hand in hand.

I suggest the detail critics become more familiar with the process of following a comic strip storyline done in simplified three and four panel installments. Rosa and Gunther are flying off to Peru. Done. I guess Greg has been hitchhiking around the USA or the galaxy for that matter instead of flying. Perhaps he should just quit. He’s BUM. A HACK.

The Peru-specific poster shows that this is a flight to that country, not a connecting flight to another US airport. That means that Gunther and Rosa are inside the international departure area of the airport, where you have gone through TSA screening and passport checks. They do not have those things for individual gates (“Gate 46”) but for that whole part of the airport. Quill would not be allowed there. This is simply bad story-telling. Quill could have been shown saying good-bye to the couple as they prepared to go through the screening area, since that’s what real people do at real airports.

No, it’s a small airport. As evidenced by the fact that the hyphen and the S fell of the “Gates 4-6” sign and haven’t been replaced. I was actually more interested in the fact that G & R are really going to South America, and that it wasn’t all a terrible mistake as they were really going to work at the free clinic in Peru, Indiana.

No .. I have a mechanism in my brain that tells me that I don’t have to go around pointing out everybody’s flaws every five minutes….. – Do you really think criticizing people constantly ( notice that I emphasized it, and didn’t say “only a bit”)… actually would make them do better? Do you go around in real life and walk up to people in the middle of their day and do that, to make the world better? In that case, let me point out your flaws in critiquing, and say “you missed some details”, and so I want you to do better, so shape up! – There… see? “Get the picture?”

and the “explaining away” is only using thought and imagination to try to counteract all of the “non creative” nitpicking being done… – (1) “the water level in the coffeepot isn’t standard for an actual coffee maker”.(2) “that other wall is not perpendicular to the floor’s actual height! It’s not congruent to the tangible fixtures! It’s not right!!” – Does it really feel good to go around looking for these things in a drawing ? A comic strip, for that matter? What about Tweety Bird? Do you say that he’s “inaccurately drawn”? Or Taz? Or better yet, Bugs? Do you hate on those long hallways in Tom and Jerry? Do you go around criticizing “optical illusions”, too?

Artistic License needs a reason to be used, namely that it helps tell a better story. This misrepresentation of how airports work in no way tells a better story – the same story could be told just as effectively by having Quill watch the couple as they head to the departure screening, not to the gate. As it is, it’s a pointless distraction that weakens the story on account of its not being realistic. Artistic License would allow Greg Evans to show Gunther and Rosa boarding a dirigible to sail through the clouds to Peru, but there would be no reason for it. There’s no reason for this depiction of an impossible departure scenario, either.

Don’t worry, Gun will back on the next plane, I promise. He has to have a Visa and Passport, which he couldn’t have gotten this quickly. It took two months to get mine. Also, unlike America, Peru secures their borders, meaning they will probably put him in jail for sometime and then deport him back to the US.

-I’m going to comment on the strip freely-I know you think you’re making things better by identifying smaller issues that you describe as illogical, but let me try one more time to explain why this kind of critique isn’t useful.-I belong to a short story writer’s group, and critique is exactly what we do for each other. But what we concentrate on are the major issues, not points like grammar and punctuation. There are paid editorial assistants who can fix those smaller types of flaws. -The big issues, such as whether the ‘lead’ is buried (too much descriptive detail before the action finally starts, for example), or whether the reader gets lost because there are too many unattributed bits of dialog, THAT is the kind of critique that helps.-A comic strip is an even smaller palette than a short story. With only 4 frames, there can only be so much detail included. If the reader constantly concentrates only on small details, the reader will never see the larger, continuing story (picture)….

Gunther’s mom made him get one. She couldn’t have gotten one without him. Gunther knew he had a passport before she brought it out.

If Gunther was still a minor at the time, I would think she’d have to get it for him. She probably had to bring him to the agency in person (if the two parents are alive then both have to be there with child), and provide a photograph of him. Of course, they would not give the document directly to the child. You wouldn’t want the child walking around with it in the event the child is abducted and taken to a foreign country somewhere. Child abduction is serious business these days. Hence, Ms. B gives him the passport when he’s old enough to use it on his own.

Seems legit to me. My hometown has a small airport. It’s mostly used for deliveries, medical/search & rescue flights and pleasure flights. There is also ONE small passenger plane that connects to ONE “big city” airport. It leaves once per day, but not on Sunday.

“Security” consists of the old man who checks you in engaging you in pleasant small talk. There is no “gate”, you just hang out next to the tarmac door in the “lounge”. It consists of an old couch, bunny-eared tv, coffee table, an ancient diner style coffee maker, a few ceramic mugs, powdered creamer and sugar. If you use a mug, you are expected to wash it before you leave. There’s also a faded, tattered poster of the destination city near the exit door. If you are a local, or at least pleasant, the old man will offer you a beer or soda.

When the pilot is ready to leave you all walk out the back door, across the tarmac and get in the plane.

If you wonder where this may be going. . .

    Go to:

    http://www.gocomics.com/espanol/luannspanish#.U8AZnvldVZU

Forget the airport trivia, unless you still sweat that Charlie Brown has too big a head, or that Snoopy could not pilot an airplane.

Quill is obviously no gossip, but it seems odd that Luann knows nothing of this. . .

And that Rosa’s parents are not there.

“…so tho she may have mixed feelings to deal with I believe she will accept it as for the best.”… ^Ultimately, that’s what I think, too. I am not a "shipper’ as they say for Luann and Gunther, but I know it’s also possible for someone to “miss the well” when it’s gone and dry". She could possibly also have to deal with the fact that “even he” has been able to “find success”. That could lead to what you said about her re-thinking whether or not she values Quill and I would wonder if it would be a “positive” motivation (for her to value Quill) or a “negative” one (as in “fueling” her desire to hold on too tightly). – Good point on that, BTW!

LOL! Don’t forget the “runny meat sauce” syndrome, too!– You’d be surprised ! Even if the cloth was black, and the plates were a soft, muted color, you’d have that one person out there who’d have a problem that the colors didn’t go together, somehow!– Personally, and for the record, I only care that the food isn’t poisoned! As long as that isn’t an issue, I think the rest of the night should go pretty well, all in all!

-withering criticism-There are some here who can be described as providing ‘withering criticism’. I, for one, don’t see that phrase applying to you. My concern with those who dwell on the nits is that the overall picture is being lost…-One of the things I do in our short story critique group is send up a ‘jump the shark’ alert when a story pulls the reader out of the ‘suspended disbelief’ mode by just going a bit too far. And I rarely find that details about setting are shark jumpers. It’s really more about a character suddenly growing super powers, or a villain never before seen who turns out to be the murderer, or what….

This might be a stretch, but some locales may prohibit imaging of screening areas and the TSA agents. I’m sure Greg is keeping this in mind.

For a very long time, photography has been prohibited at INS/Customs (now CBP) stations and in the arrival halls.

It may be prohibited to photograph a TSA screening station, but it certainly is not prohibited to draw one for a comic strip! Even if Greg Evans doesn’t know what one looks like, all he would have had to do to today’s strip, as I mentioned, is change the signage from “Gate 46” to “International Departures This Way”. Problem solved, tells the same story, and doesn’t suffer from the distraction of not being authentic.

    Speaking of which:

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.

If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.

If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. If you are not afraid of dying, there is nothing you cannot achieve.

Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

I’d call it a bit of “Unfamilliar Territory”. But it sounds like the thing I used to say: “You can’t know where you’re going, until you don’t know where you’ve been” (as in history. Probably also works in reading maps too, heh, heh!)….

    Assuming Gunther is 16-17

A huge assumption. We don’t know how old Gunther was when the passport was acquired. But it really doesn’t mater. My point was that the OP that started this sub-thread thought he didn’t have a passport or a visa at all, and I was merely pointing out that Gunther did have a passport (by however he acquired it), and that he doesn’t need a visa prior to traveling for tourist visit of up to 90 days. Yes, you could, simply by stepping over the wall, thereby by-passing the TSA screening. Airports aren’t allowed to be constructed like that.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Greg Evans has showed us that he’s unaware that non-passengers aren’t allowed into an airport’s gate area (and haven’t been for maybe 20 years now):_

It’s not a matter of doing it unnoticed. It’s the possibility simply of doing it at all (by someone who then rushes into the crowd on the other side, and hides a weapon somewhere in the gate area) that makes this arrangement unallowed.

As I showed in the strip I posted above where Luann says good-bye to Quill in the airport’s international departure gate area, Greg Evans in fact doesn’t know, or deliberately (or perhaps carelessly) ignores, the reality of how air travel works.

No, I mean a link to something you should see on the Facebook page. Look at one of the links (with your name in it) above, right in my most recent response to RB, right above Airman’s…. it will lead you right to it, and something should “pop out” when you scan it….. you’ll “run on” into it, at that!

K, just in case you didn’t have time, here it is in a "nutshell’. I was gathering “evidence” (Greg and Karen’s posts on FB) to respond to RB, when “lo and behold”, I saw the familiar “run on sentences” and the name to go with it. It was on June 20th, just last month. So, apparently, it lets us know the “whereabouts”, if you donny know what I’m talking about.
