Mare (from the Latin for “Sea”) = a large, level basalt plain on the surface of the moon. (Plural = Maria)

Example: Mare Tranquillitatis = the Sea of Tranquility – where Apollo 11 landed on the Moon.

Joe’s right. Actually some of them are the south side of a north-going horse.
