Joe: Ok, so we haven't had internet connection for a couple hours...what's the big deal? Danae: Are you serious? No Facebook, Twitter or Instagram?! How am I supposed to stay in touch with everyone? Joe: The same way we did before the internet. Uh...I mean only as far back as the 1980's... Danae: *ook-ook* Me too. What's your point?

Danae does not comprehend “ancient history” or the outdated customs of that time period……Now fix the internet before she plots to kill someone

Come on. The interwebs didn’t go mainstream until 1995, and broadband DSL didn’t see wide adoption until 2001.

I remember in the 90’s being given a demo at Cornell of the WWW when it was about three sites and no graphics!
I’m sooooo old!!!

This is not the generation gap we had heard about in the past; this is the technological gap between the old and the new.

Talk to a wwII radio operator (while you still can)… they remembered morse code phases in rhythmic cadence, like we used to do with songs like the William Tell Overture…

odd…..time warner is having a spotty nation wide outage now.
lee.alford13 over 10 years ago
I’ve read two strips about outages this morning. If the internet dies, people will have to buy newspapers to get their comics.Coincidence?

I’m sure most kids and young adults haven’t got a clue what it was like.

Danae is about to discover that most terrifying of all things: that during the period she was unavailable, the rest of the world continued to exist and function; in fact, it didn’t even notice she was missing.

I now officially HATE THAT KID!!
thirdguy over 10 years ago
Remember when one of the fears about kids, was that they spent too much time in front of the TV. Then it was that they spent too much time playing video games. Now if you can pry their noses away from the smart phone, long enough to eat dinner, it is a minor miracle.

Hey, I wonder if the phone still works! Except if you have a digital package, maybe not . . . .

If you know what “vinyl” means, you might be getting old.If you remember floppy disks, you might be getting old.If you have ever used a pay phone, you might be getting old.If you have the patience to wait for something instead of instant satisfaction, you might be getting old.…Gah! I’m getting old!

What luck! Strips are due to the editor four weeks ahead, but today’s headline is the ongoing Time Warner outage.

Wiley starts this story yesterday… Time Warner Internet goes out today. Coincidence—or evil plot? It would be irresponsible not to speculate!

Ah yes, the old complaint of “kids today don’t even remember a time before the Internet!”
Well, of course they don’t. If you’re a kid, then the Internet is older than you are.
This fact should be obvious to anyone with knowledge of the Internet’s history and some basic arithmetic skills. Or failing that, access to Wikipedia and a calculator.
HTTP dates back to 1991, 23 years ago. The current version of HTTP was defined in January of 1997 (with draft implementations before that), almost 18 years ago.
Email (in its current form) was defined in 1982, 32 years ago. Other email protocols go at least as far back as the ’70s.
TCP/IP goes all the way back to 1974, 40 years ago.

It’s funny to consider the looks on people’s faces when you speak of winding a generator to signal an operator so she could connect you with the party you want to talk to.

Arianne, ENG8INE, thanks for the posts….Lots of fun…..You know what I like about this place? You can be goofy and serious at the same time….I like that…Especially because never been able to use one without the other….
