Luann’s expressions and gestures in the two panels pretty much carry today’s humor. Frank is looking good today; using TJ’s $60k to secure a (much larger) bank loan and acting the decisive father. Quill is understanding. Only Luann was surprised….

Not sure why Frank is worried his Adult daughter might have sex. Kids do grow up, y’know. He doesn’t seem to be too worried about his son.

This project is going to cost well over a million dollars. Are we expected to believe that securing a $60K investment from a third party will be enough that a bank now will loan them the other million? Note that their own resources don’t qualify them for a loan even for the first $60K!

Today’s “explanation” continues to violate all laws of finance and arithmetic.

1I really cannot fathom this entire arc. The very idea of renting out a bedroom in your home (having a stranger have access to your home and BEING IN your home, and having to SHARE the space with the stranger… especially at the end of a hard day getting the “Warehouse Joint” running)…. NOT MY IDEA OF FUN. Now, if a family were financially in danger for their day-to-day living expenses…. then yes, I could see this sort of rental arrangement…. but here? Bah. I think Frank is perhaps in a manic phase. That Nancy (usually the voice of reason for most things) is going along with this boggles my mind. How many folks would use all their funds & then rent a bedroom in their house to a stranger to fund a “pie-in-the-sky” warehouse scheme????To me, a more “realistic” way at which this story arc could have occurred would have been TJ (with his hair-brained schemes already being somewhat legendary) teaming up with some other buyer (either a “shady” sort, or a “clueless” sort) and then all hell could break loose in a reasonably logical fashion.I guess TJ’s “clueless” partner IS Frank… but to me, it just doesn’t ring true or real for some reason.

I do have to say, however, that I am glad that (at least for the moment) Frank has put the “kibosh” on Luann’s flighty notion of having Quill move in with them. That was reassuring on Frank’s part…. I hope he sticks with it!

    > Perhaps the De Groots put up their house as collateral?

No, because originally Frank said they didn’t qualify for a loan at all. So their house wouldn’t be collateral (probably they would have to get a second mortgage on it, and Frank doesn’t rate one).

    > No one said it was going to cost “a million dollars” to purchase and renovate the warehouse. Where’d that number come from???

I said that, Real estate in Southern California costs a minimum of $10 per square foot, do (depending on how large this space is), $60K will pay for one or maybe 2 month’s rent. As for turning it from a warehouse to a gallery / auditorium, do you know how much such a renovation would cost? (Ask someone who has opened a business such as a restaurant what they paid for the build-out.) Even making it a useful warehouse again would cost quite a bit, if it’s in as bad a shape as we saw earlier this week. Just bringing the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC up to code, and fixing any major structural problems with the roof, foundation, and waterproofing, will cost a big sum. And if Frank is considering buying the space – do you have an idea how much even an empty lot in Southern California costs??? Take a look at real estate prices in San Marcos, CA (where Greg Evans lives, so it’s probably the model for Pitt).

There is no indication that Quill is paying rent at Gunther’s. .But we may see here that Quill would like to get out of that environment. .Mrs. B. is a super-mom problem, and Gunther can be very annoying at times. Of course, Quill would enjoy moving in with Luann, but I doubt that he expected that. .He could move in with Brad and TJ, and Toni will not always need separate housing. She is not living with Jonah and Shannon..Quill’s best bet is a Mooney dorm room (near the prop room, please.)

Arson is a crime. Only a law enforcement body can decide whether a crime was committed. An insurance company has no such authority.

Again, an insurance company decides whether to honor a claim. That doesn’t affect whether TJ torched the truck. It is the Fire Marshall’s investigation (and the police, and the CSI, etc.) that determines that. We saw nothing to indicate that even a routine investigation was conducted. It’s almost as if we are asked to believe that an insurance company’s claims adjuster is the arbiter of such criminal matters.

Quill’s response should be reassuring to Frank, since it shows he thinks along similar lines. That said, I think Frank should trust Quill.

Bear in mind that story arc from the last week of May/first week of June where they had the prop room to themselves and mutually called off the fooling around. And that was without the possibility of Frank or Nancy discovering them.

In fact, if you go back through the entire history of their relationship, Quill has always backed away from taking things too far.

I don’t see anything wrong with Luann wanting him living in the family home, because it reinforces their relationship and keeps him away from other women. And given that Quill is both very much into Luann while maintaining his level-headedness, I think he’d see it as a way to safely see what she’d be like as a life partner.

    Sign the rental agreement, already.

    . . . the female friends of Bernice’s roommate!

The ferret was about the only odd thing about any of them. And that never developed into anything interesting. (Another ‘aborted arc’ — like about ten others.).Anyway, would Nancy want a ferret in her house?

Greg Evans himself decided that Quill no longer belonged in the strip, until Karen convinced him to bring Mr. Boring back. I was hoping that once Luann enrolled in community college, she would find another suitor (while Quill lands a job on Broadway, or in a volcano). Maybe next year…

    > But couldn’t they work in association with the police?

Not until the police have finished. Until then it is a Crime Scene, blocked off by yellow tape. The police do not want a Crime Scene messed with, by private investigators. After they’re finished, then the insurance companies can do anything they want. (Often all they do is read the police report.) The insurance companies’ decisions about whether to pay a claim have no bearing on the legal authorities. It is amazing that the strip put so much emphasis on what the insurance company would decide but never even mentioned a Fire Marshall investigation, which is the first thing that always happens after a fire.
