Actually dogs being a pack animal if left alone go a little crazy. No, literally they get terrified and panic. But if you have two, you have a pack and a much mentally healthier dog.
Thus, I have cats. Saner and when they like you, a decision was made.

We used to have two dogs. As far as I could tell, they spent the time we were out of the house lollygagging and drinking beer.

I got a goat. (Because everybody needs a goat, THAT’S why.)One goat is lonely, so I got him a couple of does/nannies to keep him happy. Then I quickly had seven goats. Then somebody grabbed a loose goat wandering around and tossed it in my fence. Then I had eight goats for about a week. Then the real owner noticed and I was back to seven. Then a neighbor decided goats were too much trouble and talked me into taking his 20 or so goats. Then I broke my leg and was temporarily unable to properly tend the Democratic goats (always looking for a …), so I sold or gave them to one of my many cousins. All but the original who ran off into the woods. Then he was a lonely goat again for several years as he wandered the woods and swamps..I should just have gotten a second buck/Billy.
