Transcript:
Arlo: You're not fat!
Janis: I just want to lose a few pounds!
Janis: My clothes would fit better! I'd FEEL better!
Janis: "I want to look like myself, again!"
Janis: Is that so unreasonable?
I work out 2-4 hours per day. I rarely have over 2000 calories per day. I practice martial arts, & cannot shed the 30 pounds that I have left to lose. Man is not meant to be childishly thin, Janis. I no longer care what “they” say about diet, exercise, etc.. I am in superb health at 59, no meds, & a realistic view that I will not have the shape of an 18 year old again. Society puts ridiculous & false expectations on people. Look at pictures of medieval peasants. They are heavy, but their entire survival lifestyle revolved around physical, constant heavy labor. According to today’s standards, they are overweight. So, starving peasants who do physical labor are overweight? Girls are thin, most women are not. Only 1 in 10,000 has a “model’s” figure.
If Janis got her weight down to what it was when she was in her twenties, she’d look gaunt – and probably older than she really is. A bit of fat helps fill out the wrinkles.
All I know is this, I’ve been married to the most beautiful woman in the world for 43 years. She still has the same weight as when we were married. It’s just shifted a bit. She is still the most beautiful woman in the world and I don’t want her to change
I was going through menopause, and whined to my doctor that I was trying to lose weight. He kindly laughed at me, and said, “You are going through menopause. Quit trying to lose weight till menopause is over. Then you’ll be able to.” He was right! He also said I’d be over it at age 52. He was also right. Unfortunately he retired. He’s since passed away. He was such a fine old Doctor, who delivered hundreds of babies. He is missed.
Well there’s different versions of yourself. Infant, toddler, young child, etc. Don’t know why we should still look 20 when we’re 60 if we don’t look 3 yrs old when we’re 18.

You’re asking the wrong person, Janis – you need to take this up with Father Time.
LuvThemPluggers about 9 years ago
She wants to look 30 years younger, and that’s probably not reasonable.
Varnes about 9 years ago

denying reality always leads to problems, sorry, Janis

In 10 years Janis will look back at how she looks now and think that she looked great.
fleebell about 9 years ago
I think she should let her hair grow back out. I’ve always thought long hair looked nicer. Then again I guess I’m a bit old fashioned on that one.

Janis’ memory of herself in panel 3 looks painfully thin to me.
