Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for July 29, 2010
Transcript:
Joe Pyle: OK, girls... We need to get the Ekert back down to a reasonable size before it destroys our house. So no more TV, radio, or any other negative energy... We just have to keep it positive around here for a while. Flo: Are you sure yaw fathah said he wants you to stay with me fah the rest of the summah, deah? Danae: Positive...

The look on Danae’s face in panel 3 … CLASSIC!

Mr. Rogers was make believe. Non Sequitur is real.
ksoskins over 14 years ago
Mr. Rogers was not make believe. Fred was an ordained minister, a licensed pilot, an accomplished musician, and a genuinely decent guy.

Another Brilliant strip. I so wish Non Sequitur would come more often than just once a day. sigh. Any other strips that readers here would recommend? (other than Calvin, Foxtrot and Boondocks)

What is needed is a source of positive energy. Say a squad of bright bubbly blond cheerleaders. just have someone keep texting them that their team scored an other point. rotate in fresh squads as needed.

Fred Rogers also was a highly decorated Marine.

Victoria could fix this…

That’s one way to cut down on the negative waves at the house…..and I love panel 3 too.

Hmm, subplot here: Danae trains to become a short-order cook!

@ arifvakil… Mister Boffo is usually entertaining..

Eddie Murphy did a good Mr. Rogers routine too.

Mr Rogers the marine is an urban legend. He never served in the military. See snopes.com.
MobyD over 14 years ago
@Submachine - Nope, sorry. Fred Rogers was by all accounts a very decent human being, but he never served in any branch of the military (not that being a decent human being and serving in the military are mutually exclusive - they’re not).

I actually don’t see where we’re going with the Eckert. Keep it coming! And if you want negativity in a baseball stadium, try Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona: Home of the last-place Diamondbacks.
Hoomi over 14 years ago
Oh, dear lord, whatever you do, don’t let the Eckert ANYWHERE near Fred Phelps and his Westboro cohorts. The universe could be thrown completely out of balance with that massive a body suddenly floating around!
lewisbower over 14 years ago
Wherever the TV writers and producers are, there you should find Ekert

In my opinion, Non Sequitur is the only comic worth reading today (or any day). Wiley, keep it up with your astute observations of the Human condition and please bring back the reincarnating Homer.

One white Ekert….and there goes the neighborhood!

About Mr. Rogers. I think this cartoon says it all. (Be sure to hover your cursor over the cartoon image to get the bonus punchline.)
And submachine, as others have said, Mr. Rogers was not a Marine or a Seal or even in the military. Those are all just urban legends. (Mr. Rogers was, however, a seminary classmate of my former pastor, which I one reason I know these things.)
magnamax over 14 years ago
Robin Willams did Mr. Rogers in his first HBO concert. I hope Fred never saw it. Talk about character assassination. AT least Danae knows where the problems come from in her neighborhood. Can you say troublemaker? Sure. I knew you could.

On the third panel, Father and sister, Katie looked at Danae. Danae felt like it was her fault for having Ekert, the elephant-fairy in their home. That was why Danae had to stay with her grandma for the rest of summer. Poor thing, Danae! Tsk!

BIRD, “Mr. Rogers was make believe. Non Sequitur is real.” LOL hilarious!
wish I had got in earlier, another urban legend is that Captain Kangaroo fought at Okinawa….

On an appearance on The Tonight Show, Fred Rogers said that all the sweaters he wore on the show were hand-made by his mother. Every year for his whole life (to that point), his mother would knit him two cardigans a year, one for Christmas and one for his birthday.
The man was a saint. I get a kick out of parodies (I’ve heard he didn’t mind them, either), but whenever I hear somebody bad-mouthing Mr. Rogers himself, I feel most unneighborly.
olmail over 14 years ago
a nearly complete absence of politically charged commentary. it appears the ekert has done his thing on the comment board.
Ceceee over 14 years ago
Near complete. Some people are still calling other people a vulgar name beginning with T. And I’m not interested in hearing justifications for name-calling, for there really aren’t any.

OLMAIL -
i was under the impression that the comics and the editorial/political ‘toons were seperate (in opinions).
i don’t understand why we have to add political comment on this section at gocomics…

JANROBK-
r u referring to the “spams” ?

…and where is (looks around real quick to make sure she isn’t here) Vickie?
fritzoid Premium Member over 14 years ago
myming, if the comics in the daily section are nonetheless making political references (and many of them do, either consistently or occasionally), why should there be a blanket condemnation of political comments? True, many people (on either side) will drag their political invective out when it’s clearly irrelevant, but Wiley’s disclaimers notwithstanding this strip often invites taking sides…

Someone suggesting “more than once a day” Is lovely ,but so absurd. I can’t even imagine how some cartoonists can be so creative as to consistantly produce such a product every day. I’m totally in awe! I used to edit the PTA newsletters of both schools my kids were attending (grade and high) and I took to doing a cartoon or two in each (because they did not allow me to editorialize in any other manner). That was just 2 to 4 a month and not easy!
cutiepie29 over 14 years ago
Some of my personal favorites are Cul de Sac (as someone else already mentioned), Lio (there is no dialogue, just site gags), 2 Cows and a Chicken, The Barn, Mythtickle, and Imagine This. It is kind of an eclectic mix, but some fun, fun strips there.

XKCD - agree with CoBass. Pretty nerdy sometimes though. MinkyMoo - it’s Lady Friday… ;)
