Gene: This chicken thing is supposed to be an experiment, remember! Meg: But it's succeeding! Meg: I'm lucky to get a dozen eggs a day! I could sell three times that many. NOW! Even before we open the produce stand! Meg: Are you guys really serious about this local agriculture thing?! Mary Lou: Watch your tone. Gene: Grown-ups say that kind of thing when they know you have a point!

I’ve been enjoying this arc, not only has it been nice to catch up on the second generation, but the entire week has had a great narrative flow as well.

True that, Gene – listen to Meg. She seems a better farmer than the two adults.

Gene, you stand on the edge of a knife after that last comment.

Meg’s got that incentive to succeed that can only be fostered by capitalism. It’s called profit. Don’t let Bernie Sanders near her, he’ll send the chickens to a government co-op, and put her on the government dole, and call that a success.

I don’t think they give a hill of beans about farming.

“Watch your tone”: inhibits growth and communication, builds resentment.“What adults do…” promotes growth and communication; builds cooperation.

They should go to a subscription based local ag operation. Much steadier income than a farm stand.

Why would they discourage Meg? She sounds intelligent and has good ideas. Her mom shouldn’t treat her like a baby.

moonschottYou don’t know anything about co-ops either. They are a free enterprise system in which equal owners band together to provide goods and services for themselves rather than make a profit for self-serving executives. “Government co-op” is a total oxymoron.

jchic said@moonschott“Don’t let the republicans near her or they’ll buy up her operation”.Note she wouldn’t sell unless the money was more valuable to her than her business. She could carry her money and experience into some new business.. (There was a fellow who kept building petroleum refineries. Every time he finished, John David Rockefeller would buy him out. He then took the money and experience gained from building the previous refineries, and build a new, bigger, better refinery. He enjoyed building and improving. The money was just a means to continue doing so. (This is not the same as being bought out with a No Compete clause.) ).In reality, her business would be too easy to duplicate without paying her a penny but too small to bother with.Conversely, nothing is ever too small for government to consider interfering and/or taking over — as shown by shutting down children’s lemonade stands.

I have met Mennonites whose relatives were caught up in the Soviet collectivization and slaughtered for peacefully resisting or starved out by complying as the government stole their food for this year and seed for next year..Their Ethiopian puppets did the same thing a few years back, intentionally killing about a third of the people

No, Gene, no they don’t. Meg has made her point, now she is in overkill, hence the “tone”.

Meg is the kind of kid who will become fabulously wealthy while her friends go to college.

And then they will look down their noses at her because she doesn’t have a college education.

yeah, Go Meg. You will be able to afford that nose job in no time!!!(right folks, I just said that to wind you all up in respect to my ‘homely’ comment the other day. I don’t mean it, and it is late in the comments and no one will respond anyway, so don’t get your panties in a twist!)

DavidHuieGreenOh, so Moonschott was just saying one thing while meaning another. Well that clears it up completely. Really facilitates communication, doesn’t it? Especially when what was “meant” is irrelevant to the subject at hand.

hippogriff said,DavidHuieGreen“Oh, so Moonschott was just saying one thing while meaning another.”.Yep, that’s my guess, from context. “Well that clears it up completely.”.Thank you. I try to help my fellow man — and woman and child and helpless animals.. “Really facilitates communication, doesn’t it?”.Do I detect sarcasm or am I just imagining it? .Proper use of words facilitates communication. It is not sufficient, though, because so many read in unintended meanings. Even with proper terminology communication fails if all parties don’t know or agree on meanings.. Quite often even the correct word is unacceptable because it is offensive. For example, “stupid” was replaced by “retarded” under the theory what was actually going on was that some were just slower to learn. Then “retarded” and “slow” became ofensive and were replaced by “special” which is now insulting. Lately the term is “specific learning disabilities” which will soon offend those who are offended by the term “disabled,” under the theory reality isn’t real if we pretend hard enough. .Communication is hard to achieve when it isn’t desired..“Especially when what was “meant” is irrelevant to the subject at hand.”.Is it really?.The subject was a child’s attempted entry into business and the problems she faces. Stray dogs. Capitalization needs (more chickens and coops). Market demand size. Future. While excessive, it isn’t really irrelevant to point out future problems which might kill her enterprise..Sure, I trust Bernie"s socialism goals to be less extreme than Stalin, Mao or Fidel, but then I’m far too trusting for my own good. Remember there were Jews who went along with Hitler because they thought his economic reforms were most important and didn’t believe he would follow through on other things. They were wrong, besides which he destroyed the economy to boot.
