Mudd: Worse than that! Do you know what the penalty for fraud is on Deneb 5?

Spock: The guilty party has his choice. Death by electrocution, death by gas, death by phaser, death by hanging…

Mudd: The key word in your entire peroration, Mr. Spock, was… d-d-d-DEATH. Barbarians! Well, of course I… left.

Kirk: [to the others] He broke jail.

Mudd: I, ah, borrowed transportation…

Kirk: He stole a spaceship.

Mudd: …the patrol reacted in a hostile manner…

Kirk: They fired at him!

Mudd: They’ve got no respect for private property – they damaged the bloody spaceship!

Quite a negotiator.

Was he supposed to get ‘’death by quartering’’ or ‘’the ratbox’’?

It’s a reference to the Star Trek episode “I, Mudd”, with scofflaw Harry Mudd explaining what he was up to since the last time he tangled with Kirk.

They were originally going to send him to the Democratic National Convention but decided that that would be too cruel and inhumane.

Ford Prefect: If we’re lucky [the Vogon captain] will throw us out into space [without any space suits].

Arthur Dent: And if we’re unlucky?
