There’s a restaurant where I occasionally dine, and at the bottom of the menu is this:“Please no substitutions our chef is crazy, seriously”

Easiest way to tell you’re in a quality steak house. When you don’t need to add ANYTHING to the steak. Not even salt or pepper.

Anyone remember the I Love Lucy when she unknowingly orders escargot in a French restaurant? Once the food comes she asked for ketchup (“tomatan” in French I think) and the chef comes out and goes ballistic.

When a waitress asks me if I want steak sauce, my response is always, “Why, isn’t the meat any good?”

Ketchup on a burger or hot dog or sausage or meatloaf, sure. On a steak? WTF is wrong with you?

If the steak is cooked right you don’t need any sauce. Steak sauce is for bad cooks to hide their mistakes.

One restaurant in Durham, NC has a sign stating that ketchup is for bad food, and that they do not serve bad food.

And the truth is, they serve only VERY good food.

Catsup: usually a regurgitated hairball, sometimes a regurgitated mouse.Ketchup: an un-capsized small sailboat.

I’ll have some of that cold, spicy tomato sauce out of a squeeze bottle for my French fries please.

For me, ketchup only works on fries. And even then it needs to be bolstered with 50% hot sauce for flavor.

Ketchup has been banned in my household for years. Since I do the grocery shopping, it is easy to enforce.

Ketchup needs some love here! Think about it like this: if tomatoes are a fruit, then ketchup is a smoothie.

I never understood putting catsup or steak sauce on an expensive steak. You could just get hamburger and put the sauce on it… it would taste the same.I love the taste of STEAK, it don’t need any help.

I hadn’t eaten ketchup, which I loved, in a long time…like years, just by chance. Then one day I did. Almost gagged. That stuff is horrible. Evidently it really IS an acquired taste, one we’ve gotten as children.

Wow – so many comments about whether or not to use ketchup, and nothing about whether or not one should eat flank steak.Flank steak in a stir fry, or fajitas, sure. Flank steak as an actual steak is just crazy talk. Get a good cut of meat for your steak.

In 1963 KC, MO had some good German restaurants.6 people from our design studio had lunch in one. Menu had all manner of tasty German dishes. When the waiter came to one artist/writer he asked for a hamburger & Orange Nehigh Soda. Without a comment kitchen sent someone out a quick food emporium, bought the hamburger & Orange soda. We were amazed at the service, especially for a non menu item. Of course kitchen staff’s later comments would have been great material for our humor oriented Contemporary Design studio.

We were in a fairly nice Lebanese restaurant a couple of weeks ago and ordered a lamb dish that came with roasted potatoes. We both kind of looked at each other like “what the?” when the waiter plopped the bottle of ketchup on the table.
