This happened just today. My old kitty Melange seemed interested in being a ‘desktop cat’ so I put a bed on it for her. She ignored it, would walk over it to get to the rest of the desk… so I removed it, and now she sits there.
At least until just ONE cat gets into the bed. Then they’ll ALL be in the bed at the same time. That’s the way it is at our house. One of our cats that’s passed on loved the linen closet. Her favorite spot was on top of the bathmats. We tried putting a mat outside of the closet but that didn’t satisfy Miss Molly. We finally gave up and left the door cracked so she could sleep in there. (That’s Miss Molly as my avatar. She was on the mats when I took her picture)
Amazon generously includes at least one free cardboard cat bed with each mail order…that brown paper stuffing is also sent free of charge, and is a real crowd pleaser here at our house :):)
Thomas B. loves his cat bed! I have a photo of him in it when he was 5 months old, filled about half of it. New photo, at 10 months, feet, arms, head hanging out of it. Still loves it.
Recently got an internet order that came in a fairly large box, the boys were overjoyed. Hours were spent in, on, and running around the box until I ruined all the fun and put the box in the recycling. They still have the shoebox to use as a toy/bed/chewing station so the moping didn’t last long.
Every time we bring a box home, it only takes about 5 seconds after we empty it for it to become Full of Cats – despite having about 8 different types of cat beds lying around for them to enjoy!
Off Topic from BCN: Toddler turned four yesterday!! From now on, here and elsewhere on social media I’ll refer to the kids as “The Boy” and “The Girl,” since he isn’t a toddler anymore! (In the comic you’ll see they will still be the Toddler and the Baby until around this age also, and then the cats will also grapple with what to call them later . He is bright, funny, serious, and loves bones and the ocean.
I’ve got a feral cat in my guest room, who has a “happy spot” up high. I put a cat bed there, and he was Most Displeased for about 4 days. Then he decided it was, in fact, an improvement on the happy spot.
I knitted and felted (fulled) hand-dyed wool into a cat bed for mine. Sewed and stuffed a soft flannel pad for inside. Hand-tooled a leather band for the outside to keep it upright. They would rather sleep in an old cardboard Amazon shipping box. SMDH
Has anyone seen the @Tavicat comic in the past few days? OMG, Fargo – sweet, dear, Fargo – has died! It’s awful! Okay, he’s a ghost who apparently has huge angel wings, can still eat, can now deal with Pippi without fear, and is no longer suffering from his heart condition – but his humans must be devastated!
I have 5 psychic cats, really I do. They know whatever it is that I need to use right now and plant themselves in it and sleep. Therefore it is off limits to me until they deem it of no further use to them at the moment.
I found some pictures on the interwbs the other day of kittahs (is “LOL Cats” generic now the same way as “Xerox” is for all copies?) showing their defiance of designated places for sits.
My favorite was the cat that chose the dustpan over the cat bed beside it.
Cats like to see without being seen, which is why they like closets and the tops of bookcases. They also seem to feel more secure when the space they are in is barely big enough for just them.
On cold days, they like things which are warm, like clothes fresh from the dryer and sun warmed spots on the floor. The floor over the basement heater is a good choice too.
1st cat had 2 beds that she loved equally, but in winter our bed under all the layers was best. Current cat has no use for cat beds, but will sleep between us in cold weather, as well as anywhere else when the need arises.

And Chomsky’s “colourless green ideas sleep furiously” is not quite as meaningless as he thought. Elvis shows that it is possible to sleep angrily.

I sprang for a $7 cat toy (7 dollars!!!) the other day and neither cat is interested in it! Sheesh!

The whole house, and its residents, are cat beds.

Lupin’s total disgust is priceless. Georgia, your talent for cat expressions is awesome.

Erm actually, because atoms never touch you don’t sleep in a bed, you sleep above a bed.
