Is that an old WWI or WWII sign? The design of the crown symbol is from that era.

@Chrisnp: it’s from the Second World War - they had this sign and two others in case of a National Emergency (i.e - in case of invasion) but they were never actually used.

Good advice, Pab. We’re remembering the seventieth anniversary of the Second World War Blitz right now but no-one here is suggesting we burn Martin Luther’s Bible.

Two memories of 9/11 and its aftermath seem to stand out in my mind above all others. The first is stories by the last few survivors who escaped the towers, about the firemen and EMTs they passed who were calmly climbing up the stairwells as the panicked survivors were rushing down. The second is Queen Elizabeth ordering the Coldstream Guards to play The Star Spangled Banner at the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace the next day.

Thanks, Pab, for honoring those memories, and many more like them.

    Thanks for remembering, Pab.

Yuko: Freedom is the only way. Does that mean I’m insane?

Roto: Thanks for reminding me of QE’s 9-12 tribute. I’d forgotten. Always did like her.

A Muslim holy day today after Ramadan which is a 30 day holiday ordered by Mohamed to show their strength over other religions by their willingness to fast. There are varying beliefs as the when in the 20’s it happened but the Quoran is said to have been given to M. during this time. Itends with a large feast and days long celebration after

In memory of 9/11 several American Muslim communities have chosen to celebrate quietly and not have the usual open displays of this time. You may wish to honor them for their sensitivity at this time as well.

Stiff upper lip and all that, Pab.

QEII was well-brought up in that respect. During the Blitz the Royal Family stayed in London and the princesses went out with their parents among the rubble and carnage. She knew what it meant then to have the royalty staying in the drop zone!

This is nice. I expected to lose subscribers over today’s strip, but I’m actually up 7 from where I was yesterday.

I want to like today’s strip. I really do. But I feel like it’s trivializing what happened - the fact that Americans were attacked on their own soil, that so many people died and will never be found.

I can imagine that the feelings are still raw to many on this day, and to be honest, they still sting with me, too. It just seems to these eyes like you’re trying to cover over what happened and say “Move on already.” I hope I’m misinterpreting.

(Of course, I suspect that you couldn’t have won on a day like this by posting a statement strip of any kind, and so the effort is appreciated.)

On a less “wow what a Debbie Downer” note, I have always loved and respected QEII, but her tribute on 9/12/01 impressed me to no end. She didn’t have to do that.

I love it! There is no need to trash or burn anything and I totally respect those who chose to downplay any celebrations here on this solemn occasion. I hope that those who want to change the skyline of NYC (yet again) will also rethink their intentions. Most major wars have been waged in the name of organized religions (which is one of the reasons I eschew them).

@ thatsmyshoe - typically, a war begins with one group being attacked on its own soil by another group… for whatever reason. Why should we be surprised that it happened to us?

IMHO, I don’t think this is trivializing anything. I think it’s a welcome respite from all the fury surrounding 9-11 this year.

    Thanks, Pab!
