I used to have an Avis button that read “Ymdrechwn yn galetach.” I knew what it meant but I couldn’t pronounce it.

And so many of us have trouble with ordinary English (or the American dialects!) Is there a Chomsky in the house?

Airheadedness could be caused by generations of inbreeding. Thus the short, weak, no chin “lords” of today

LeftWingPatriot: I didn’t think you were making fun of the language, just thought you might be interested in the information. The tale of Gelert is liable to be a mix of fact and fiction (certainly helps the tourist industry of a small village). Having spent the first 22 years of my life in Scotland, it can be quite amusing hearing certain Scottish Place names pronounced as they are spelt. If I remember correctly, you are a Giant’s fan, so hope you enjoy the play-offs.

Just wandered by. Will occasionally join the discussion. Who knew? Not me: five languages of the British Isles! Other than English have any spread to other locales?

" How often do we get to discuss the Cymra language?"

" Thoir Great na Bliadhn ’Ùire! "

    .

And here I am of Welsh descent via the Greens, even more clueless than usual.

    .

(I enjoyed listening to an Englishman excuse me — a UKer from London tell me how bad the Scotts were (my Huie ancestors), how the Welsh didn’t even bother to learn English and to be perfectly Frank — without going to The Continent — only London was even partly civilized (his part, I’m guessing). )

I don’t know a word of Welsh, but Mwng by the Super Furry Animals is one of my favorite albums from the last couple of decades. Regrettably, I doubt I’ll ever be able to sing along to it (with the exception of a few of the more repetitive choruses).
