School Teacher! A very Noble Profession, Luann! You’re Great with Kids! Say, Weren’t You once nervous around Kids and was Gunther, the Guy that You said many times that You “Care Very Much For,” Helped You overcome that? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Well, Tiff, the Gal You HATE, is playing "Patty-Cake with Gunther!
And “NO,” I’m Not saying THAT because I want to see a"Fight"….,
In order to become a licensed clinical psychologist, you need to:
Earn Your Bachelor’s Degree (Timeline: 4 to 5 Years)
Earn Your Master’s Degree (Timeline: 2 to 3 Years)
Earn Your Doctorate Degree (Timeline: 4 to 7 Years)
When I was growing up the standard line was 10 years to be a doctor, but it appears in the age of universities where it is difficult to get the classes you want from year to year, that number could be as high as 15 years. Bernice appears to be counting on at least 2 extra years, possibly more.
If Luann’s ‘go nuts’ expression were to be taken at face value, my wife, a classroom assistant/teacher’s aide, would tell you that the name of the school would have to be changed to “Planters’™ Academy”!
-
But, somewhere along the way, you get the good feeling of trying to help young minds go on the right track, in life, and seeing them actually take it….
-
And for your troubles, about two months and two weeks (and a few other days, scattered on the calendar) of “Aaaahhhhhh!”….kinda like that travel booking commercial….
Regarding going back to school: I like Lila’s comment, ’I’d rather take all my skin off with an apple peeler than go back to school." (from The Meaning of Lila).
I have a question. Many people criticize Luann for not having ideas about and motivations toward her career. Yet, they admire Nancy, her mother, who does not have a career. I see Luann as a wife and mother. What’s wrong with that?
If Luann really wants to become a teacher, she ought to be taking classes in the Education or Child Development department. Given that we always see her in art class, I had thought she planned to be an art major.
By the way, I don’t really think that her work at Kids First is putting her on the road to being a teacher. That place should be called “Feuding with Tiffany First, Kids Second.”
Do you think Greg will actually allow these characters to grow up and into adults? And then what? Well, maybe we could focus on Shannon as she becomes a teen. Lots of story lines there!
So the whole “actress” / Juilliard thing is off the boards now? Remember that before Greg Evans created Luann, he started out by writing and drawing Fogarty, a give-away strip for school newspapers about a teacher in a classroom setting. Is it his idea for Luann finally to become the new Mr. Fogarty, and then the whole cycle can start over again?
Hey, it’s totally different on the other side of the desk… Isn’t it?Ooooohhhhhhh, yeahhhhhhhhhhhh… like you wouldn’t believe. (Cue ominous cello chords here.)
SallyMargaret comments on Nancy’s lack of a career, other than wife and mother…….I agree with her. That’s perfectly okay. At least she looks a ton better than Ms. Berger, who must be in the same age bracket, but has out of date clothes, terrible hair, and dates a rotund 50 plus ex-Vegas casino manager (with a questionable background). For that matter, what does Frank do besides tinker with his local theater/restaurant?
Since no one’s opinion means anything here, I like to think that Frank met Nancy while he was in college studying accounting, and Nancy was a waitress working at Hooters’. She was very much like Tiffany, but without the family baggage.
This makes NO sense! Her patience with children would make her a good Mom, not a good teacher. Because teachers not only need patience, but also a passion for knowledge, with which to inspire their students. Plainly she doesn’t have that.
What she does have is an instinct for placement and proportion, on a practical level, that she used well in set design, which could also apply in a career as an interior decorator, an architect, or a civil engineer—none of which exclude also being a good Mom. She should go with her skill-set.
GO comics, I HATE how you so overload each page with ads (which everybody ignores) that you become unnavigable. I mean really, buffering on every third letter typed? I wish I was exaggerating! Even as a retiree I don’t have time for this.
Psychologist: 8 years. Less if you can fast-track through a Masters program and straight into a Ph.D. Psychiatrist is different, since it requires clinical training, so about 1-2 years of residency in addition to “Psychologist” schooling.
Psychiatrist: 4 years of undergraduate, 4 years of medical school, then residency and fellowship. Psychiatry residency is generally 2 years. A child and adolescent psychiatrist adds on another 2 years of child and adolescent fellowship.
Luann has never been a better than mediocre student, she doesn’t like schoolwork. and education just isn’t her thing. So why does she want to be a teacher? After what we’ve seen of her own poor classroom performance in the first decades of this strip, would you want to send your kids to be in her class at school?
Luann does seem to be good at providing care for young kids (her reading stories in the library, and what she does to mind the students at Lincoln Elementary’s day care). So why doesn’t she choose a job working at a day care center, or maybe being a full-time nanny? She’d be a lot better at that than at teaching.
Ahh, no, Luann. It’s harder on the teacher-side of the desk. So, if you’re looking for an easy route, becoming a teacher is not what you should do. Try something else to earn your living, and continue to volunteer as an aide for younger kids for the satisfaction it gives you….
I hope she plans to be an art teacher, or else constantly repeating Zebo’s class is a real waste of her time. Heck, it’s a waste even if she does plan to teach art, since Zebo is just a pretentious fraud anyway. Luann could probably learn more on her own.
