Is Marty the Mutant really D-cubed? Is the idea that he grabs Thick, dry-humps him, then shoves him away and, unnoticed by the men around him, draws handfuls of money from his coat, flings them around and somehow persuades everyone that Thick had all the money?
Is that supposed to be D-cubed in panels #2 and #3? How did his cap change positions? And how did he acquire Thick’s short arm?
I really can’t wrap my head around this sequence. If those are three separate men in the three panels, it means that in panel #2 D-cubed has suddenly decided to rescue Thick, who terrorized and attacked him last week. Why would D-cubed do that, since it endangers D-cubed?
If that’s Mullet Head in panel #3, it means that none of the homeless guys realized they had a rich man hiding in their midst, despite seeing all those newspapers with headlines about the give-aways, and despite Thick having met people who know what’s going on among their fellow homeless.
Yesterday I went to the dermatologist and had a tumor removed. My comparison test proves that this arc is five times more annoying than skin cancer, and ten times as unsightly.
Wanna see something scary? Lookit DT on the azcentral.com site and see the high ratings this arc gets. The folks there consistently rate it close to 4.7 out of 5 stars. There’s only one reason why so many people can think the same think about Thick. Clones! There’s a secret factory in Arizona that makes clones! They all think alike, and Simon Penn is one of ‘em, and that’s why so many of the homeless guys look alike! Clones! Thick is fighting the Clone Wars! The Farce is with him! Ain’t that rich?
Just to clear up at least a tiny bit of the confusion, that’s not DDD manhandling Spacy in the first panel. It’s another of the homeless guys (the one who yelled “AARRRGGHH” when he grabbed him yesterday). DDD is in panel 2 throwing cash.
Panel 1: Homeless guy who grabbed Spacy is still holding him.
Panel 2: DDD throws cash to distract the gang.
Panel 3: Yet another homeless guy yells “he’s not one of us.”
I only know this because I’ve seen the next few strips, not that it makes a lick of sense.
neonleon59, it must make some kind of sense, even in Lala-cherland!
I know there won’t be a meaningful revelation in the next few days, but could the Locher Mess Monster be setting this up so that D-cubed was abducted and brainwashed, analogous to Patty Hearst and the SLA? (stupid idea; unlikely to work on a man like D-cubed). Or does he regain his memory after a bout of amnesia? And what’s this drivel about “he’s not one of us, he’s rich?” Class warfare?
Runs with Beer, I crunched some numbers, and when you get results like 4.86 you need more than two voters. At a minimum you’d need six voters to get 4.86 (the number I just saw there) : one to vote 4 stars and 5 to vote 5 stars.
(29 stars total divided by 6 voters). If only one voter votes 3 stars, you’d need 14 others who vote 5. Unless azcentral.com is making up their results, which seems likely because where on earth could you find even five people to give this arc so many stars?
morrow, I can’t think of any law D-cubed has broken. Vagrancy? The Supreme Court ruled most such laws unconstitutional in 1972, and they wouldn’t apply to D-cubed–once he identifies himself he has a “visible means of support.”
Thick might claim D-cubed has obstructed justice by not reporting that he’s alive, but that’s a real stretch.
The money he gave to that senator? There is nothing illegal about making a campaign contribution. Even if D-cubed violated any statutes there, that’s a Federal crime and is out of Thick’s jurisdiction. And Locher hasn’t given us the facts of what went on, other than an unreliable and slanted headline.
Thick is likely to pull some sort of charge out of thin air, based on evidence that he hasn’t shown anyone. That would fit Locher’s “style.” Maybe Thick believes that D-cubed has joined a radical revolutionary group and is plotting an insurrection–in which case Thick should have called in the FBI or Homeland Security.
It’s not so hard to understand. It’s just that the action is happening so fast now the camera cuts from one viewpoint to another to show it all.
Panel 1: The cop strangling Tracy is not doing a very good job of it. Choke by the throat, not by the chin!
Panel 2: A bystander wants to help, but the crowd throws bricks at him. It is an allegory of the state of the world. Try to be helpful, you get bombarded with bricks. Alas. :(
Panel 3: The bystander tries to divert the mob violence from himself by pointing to 3D. You shouldn’t throw bricks at one of us. If you want to throw bricks at someone how about 3D? He’s not one of us! He’s rich!
Or maybe that’s a different bystander trying to divert the mob violence from his friend. It’s hard to tell…. If he is a different bystander, he is getting bricks thrown at him too. I think he is the same bystander, though, and his hat has gotten knocked crooked by a brick.
every day this strip reaches new levels of inanity and incomprehensibility – even worse it looks like the homeless comrades won’t even beat the bleeep of macthick now.
Why does D-cubed court suicide here? Does his Christlike pose suggest compassion and self-sacrifice? Is he giving up his life to save Thick? No, he’s just realized that the quickest way out of this megillah is to let the homeless guys kill him.
I dont understand. Dick is telling them let go theyre making a mistake. Why would they listen? Anyone would say that if theyre in a chokehold. Then you have someone Im assuming is 3-D chucking money around to save him, why? Didnt Dick just tackle him a few days ago? Why does 3-D care what happens to Dick? And the guy saying hes not one of them, no really? I guess they all just randomly hand out $1000 bills to whoever does a good deed. Id ask if this strip could get any worse but every day it sinks to a new low.
That guy in panel one… Why, it’s Cross-Hatch Top! Finally a return to oddly grotesque villains (as opposed to the typically grotesque ways most characters are drawn as here). His head just sort of fades into a deepening cross-hatch at the top. Thanks, Locher!
NVash, when Thick tells the man he’s making a mistake, he means that his assailant has botched the murder. Thick can’t stand imperfections and wants to be murdered in proper fashion.
I can’t wait for the next thrilling installment; I want to see how Locher makes this schtick even more idiotic.
I think the actual crime is “Having a tattoo similar to an unidentified dead guy”, which remarkably is still on the books in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
It must be Monopoly money. 3-D isnt throwing out real money at all, its Monopoly money to throw the homeless off his case. What case that is, however, has yet to be seen.

You get the idea that this whole arc is a crotchety old man’s temper tantrum at having been panhandled one summer day.

Given the deformed arms, “He’s not one of us” has a distinctly “Freaks” connotation to it.
