Bernice sure knows how to spoil fun.

It’s time for a new series in this strip. Call it The Trouble With Bernice.

Tara’s influence is already beginning to manifest.

So…. are we ever going to arc back to the “lingerie party” at The Fuse or is that not til 2018??? Hasn’t it been like a week in Luanne time by now?

Actually, “ambidextrous” + “bio lab partner” could be taken as a deliberate risqué metaphor.

Where is our legal expert? Isn’t community service an option to not get a permanent (stays with you through adult life) criminal record.

Finally. Luann is showing personality and character in panel two. OOOooo….she’s gonna steal my TV. Let’s see more of that. Luann will come to realize Bernice is a downer and sees only negativity in everything. That her snarkiness is part of her negativity personality rather than being flippant. Will she then drift away from her in search for more postivity?

Bawdy or body? Was that a snarky comment, a misunderstanding of the language used by Dez, or what is on the screen on the phone? Whichever it’s a judgement by Bernice, which veers away from any kind of fun not acceptable on her radar, that Luann actually mocks. Luann is ready for change and risk, Bernice is a reminder that risk and fun are things to be suspected. Where will be go from here then?

Unless Ann Eiffel will be running an illegal tattoo parlor for underage patrons, that body art expo should be well into the future.

Mrs DeGroot will want to go to it. To see if she wants another tattoo. And will Brad take the wife or will the wife take Brad.

Oh this is a wonderful and powerful turn. Dear Bernice with all her noble intentions of becoming a psychotherapist will definitely benefit by removing her blinders and experiencing a little more of the world and the people in it. Luann, God bless her heart, is still pretty naive. Tara has already helped her loosen up a bit. The differences in Bernice and Tara and Luann don’t have to be a dramatic dissolution of the friendships, just a loosening up and maybe losing some inhibitions and becoming more accepting of people who are different. I’m going to enjoy seeing how Dez influences their thinking and decisions. I am remembering that Bernice described Tara as fun. Bernice will find her studies of psychology will be greatly enhanced if she opens up for some pragmatic first hand experiences. I speak from experience. After 40 years in early childhood education, I shifted gears to counseling psychology. My grasp of clients problems was much broader than my younger peers. Finally, I decided I preferred working in EC to prevent the problems rather than mop up the messes of the older clients. This is going to be a fantastic learning opportunity for Lu, Bernice, and Tara. I can hardly wait for the next reaction.

While I do identify with Bernice in some aspects (she’s pragmatic, likes safety and security, is more introverted..) I do think she’s being a bit of a stick in the mud here.

Bernice is way too upset: lots of people have “criminal records”. I used to like her character but anymore she is a two legged quaalude.

I’m starting to feel sorry for Bernice. Nobody should be that tightly wound…

Actually, I side with Bernice in applying slight pressure on the brakes. Tara really hadn’t revealed anything meaningful about herself, and is in fact using a sunny disposition and and faux-positive attitude to ease her transition. I think she’s thought this out and has a few feelings she’s not allowing access to. Not that she’s all bad. She may or may not be on the dark side, and Bernice is certainly mixing in her own limited perceptions based on her involvement and experiences here. But she hasn’t really gotten to know her, to feel her out, to discern her emotions nor her mind. But I think there’s more than just the surface tension going on for Tara. Like I said before, we may see for the first time a therapy case in Tara.

What the heck happened to all the people Bernice and Dez hang with? Are they gone?

I like body art, but I’d personally never get any.

The term risqué is not gender-neutral. It almost always refers to women doing something cute to entertain men.

As a criminal prosecutor, I offer a pre-trial diversion program for first time, non-violent offenders. Very often that means college students who do dumb things. Community service & drug/alcohol education are often components of the program. If they jump through all the hoops and pay their program fees, after a period of time (6-12 months typically) the case gets dismissed. No criminal record.

Bernice was always one of my favorite characters, but her high school sweetness has diappeared and been replaced with …..I don’t know what. She’s become so mean and heartless. It may be out of style, but the girl needs an intervention before she becomes a bitter old spinster who secretly calls the police on everybody she distrusts. Before she demands capital punishment for overdue library books. SAVE BERNICE !!!!

That is a flyer and not a phone Dez is holding, sorry for saying it was a phone, and body art = tattoos. So slow I am. So Luann may decide to get a tattoo. Bernice does not approve. I hope Tara joins the party. This ought to be fun.

Do you remember Tara saying that she had allowed herself to be led by people she shouldn’t have? Why don’t we know more about Bernice’s roommate? And does Tara have any Family? How did her parents react to her college mess-up?

If Luann had gone to NYC with Tara instead of with Bernice, their (pretty dull) vacation would have been a lot more exciting than it was, since the “risky and risque’” highlight of their big adventure consisted merely of riding the subway and spending 10 minutes in a trendy night club.

Is Bernice saying that anything dealing with the “body” is therefore “bawdy”?

“Body art” seems to indicate tattooing, which I’m sure the Luann fans—typically men of a certain age—won’t approve of.

Amazing. Over the last 3 months, or so, Luann has become a real kaleidoscope of characters and aborted story lines.

Is anyone here Icelandic? I was asked an obcure question: "Is an Icelandic term the person was told means flirting, ‘Giving under the foot.’ A different way of saying, “Playing footsie.” I.E. do they share a common origin in action?

Honestly, i unfortunately could imagine Bernice and some commenters thinking of it differently.

Let’s see … Bernice is warning Luann about something /someone being risky , tho she herself spent considerable time trying to get closer to Piro. hmmmmm.

Bernice constantly raises the bar for uptightness!

Perhaps Desdemona (“Dez”) has a bit of a (Caribbean?) accent, or perhaps Bernie’s remark (panel 3) is just her usual petty snarkiness. But Luann is manifesting the greater adventuresomeness that she also showed with Pru. I don’t much care for “Body Art” in itself, but would gladly attend the Body Art Expo, unlike Bernice Halper….

“A body art EXPO” not a party. Dez is inviting Luann to at other people who have tatted and pierced their bodies. I wonder if we’ll see Crystal there? Would be nice.
