“Finally snowing” by November 12 reminds us this comic strip is set in a small town in southern Ontario. Where Lynn Johnston lived back in 1988 (Corbeil close to North Bay, Ontario), the first snow was generally a month earlier.
I managed to see the two time it snowed a couple inches in Los Angeles…some 50-odd years apart. It pretty much closed the city down until it melted a two-three hours later. 101 was closed at Malibu, 99 at the Ridge Route, all highways east…it became an island — a pretty much filthy island but there it is.
I had to laugh at the last panel. My kids were better trained – putting their boots by the air vent to dry, hanging up coats and mittens, or tossing them into the dryer (the laundry room lead to the backyard, so it wasn’t out of their way when they came back inside.) I was fairly strict with my two boys, but instead of being harsh or bossy, the rules applied to everyone. We were all responsible for our own outdoor clothing. If you want to play in the snow you make sure that it stays outside. No tracking it or the wet back inside.
Of course I loved snow as a kid…and I went to college in upstate NY on Lake Ontario, so I experienced -60 below wind chills and lake-effect snow that was off the charts! I’m in Florida now and when I feel nostalgic for snow, I’ll just take a 7 day vacation to Vail or Aspen. That scratches THAT itch in a hurry. LOL
I had a designated area for the kids to take off their outerwear. I gave up on trying to get them to pick it all up, though. Constant reminders never worked, so I just did it myself. I had so much fun as a kid in snow, seeing them happy made me happy. Now, the dog was a whole new challenge. Made way more of a job picking up after her after she had been outside.
Make this a teaching moment Elly. Stop her from leaving and say, "Honey, I’m happy you’re thrilled about the snow. But nothing in life is ever perfect. See the mess on the floor? You need to clean that up now. "
I have hunted in the mountains of Idaho for these past forty years plus…Up to 11,000 ft. All I can say is "Bleep’ a bunch of Snow….Anyone who wants to go out and play in the "stuff’ is an Idiot!….

It snowed here in Washington (Seattle area) last weekend, but it didn’t stick.

Elly, don’t live in Canada if you don’t like snow.

I loved snow as a child too. Now that I’m much older, I tend to view it with a jaundiced eye.

Elly’s problem is more one of discipline than mess. She needs to lay down the rules to Elizabeth, not just stand there and watch it happen.

This is why I live in Phoenix. Grew up in snow country and don’t miss it a bit.

Used to live in northern PA. One doesn’t always get snow there. But when you do, it’s not just a flurry.

Even Calvin has been more aware of his surroundings and takes better care not to track such a mess in the house!
