The M word, is, without a doubt, Muslim, for which an NPR reporter was recently fired and had to go to Fox News to regain his free speech rights.

Seeing people with their heads in the sand makes me nervous.

As usual, some commenters keep banging on Fox, denying reality to the bitter end.

It’s got to be true, I read it in the tabloids. As for npr, even they are feeling the pressures of corporate influences, read money. (They’re whoring for dollars too.) While they say they cover a more diverse spectrum of what they call news, fewer people remember what they “reported”. AND it is repeated at least twice in the morning or evening drive times. Welcome to the era of make nice news.

An interesting exercise in how media manipulates the message:

Step 1: View Juan Williams actual statements on YouTube Step 2: Read CEO Schiller’s statement when Williams was fired Step 3: Observe the twists and turns the ensuing story takes, great fodder for Non Sequitur! This island would be a safe place to keep the Ekert!

I gave up on NPR, CNN, and FOX - now I watch/read BBC!

For those of you like “hawg” who continually misread the 1st Amendment, at no time were Williams’ free-speech rights infringed uponm by NPR when they fired him. It was not the gov’t imprisoning or deporting him for speaking against the gov’t or its officials, which is ALL that the 1st Amendment guarantees. He was free to say what he did, I was free to call him an a-hole, and NPR was free to fire his lame a** for it.

Perhaps if more Americans read and understood what the Constitution ACTAULLY SAYS, they wouldn’t be such morons.

There is no news but Fox and Beck is its prophet.

Read? No thanks. Too much work, and that Constitution is sooooo long and boooooring! I prefer to have Glenn Beck tell me (from HIS sources) what the Constitution REALLY means, based on assumptions he makes about the Founding Fathers’ intent, which in turn are based on his own re-creations of them in his own image…

Wondering???? Why would a news outlet hire, at double the salary, a person just fired from his job due to inability to follow guidelines and should have been begging for work.

And KZFisher63, BBC gives you official British government news, supported by their taxes…same circus, different clowns (although theirs tend to be more literate and aware of the rest of the world than ours).

An intelligent person gets information from as wide a range of sources as possible, and draws his/her own conclusions. End of story.

All I know is that if you surf the net for news in other nations, you sure learn a WHOLE LOT of what is really going on in the USA!!!! And I don’t listen to a government funded (ie my tax dollars) news source for sure. They are way more biased than I want to hear.

I think this is aimed at all the people who so proudly label themselves either liberal or conservative but there is to much sand in their eyes to realize that.

Love how SOME people throw “free speech rights” around as though it means “free of the consequence of voicing your free speech.” An example–you’re in a bar and you insult the biggest guy there, who then mops the bar floor with you. He didn’t “stifle” or “encroach on” your free speech–you were able to speak it–he just objected to what you said, in a rather forceful, and in my view, deserved manner. Free speech, in fact, refers to the government not stifling opinion. Here in my hometown, a car dealer put up a “Birther” billboard–he’s allowed to do that, but he can’t whine about suppressing his free speech when others take to the print and airwaves disputing his conclusions. No abrogation of free speech there–just a remarkably st00pid business decision to alienate 95% of his customer base–as is his right. But then, when his business falls off a cliff, he can’t whine about how his “free speech rights” were trampled…

Note: indirect federal funding accounts for only 6 percent of this station’s budget. 36 percent come from “sponsorships” (that is, corporations paying for programs, just as is the case on commercial stations… and corporations are generally politically conservative) and “grants” (most from foundations… which these days are mostly bankrolled by rich conservatives like the Koch brothers). Bottom line: if anything in the funding system influences NPR’s content, it’ll influence it in the conservative direction. That may be why NPR’s “Planet Money” show (funded by ALLY Bank) seems to have morphed from a serious investigation of systemic corruption in finance to a rah-rah apologetic for the wonders of capitalism…

I am genuinly curious; FishStix, SayHowURFeelin’ and the rest of your cohorts - what would the US be like if you didn’t have to pay taxes to the thievin’ gov’munt? How on earth do you envisage the country will operate? Again to satisfy my curiousity - have you travelled to other countries to see first hand how other people live and governments govern? To paraphrase someone else, there are two things that are fatal to democracy. The first is for the people to believe everything the government says. The second is for the people to believe nothing that the government says. The same can be said for the news media. Uncritical reaction to a news source promotes poor news standards.

I would add another pairing of very bad things. Believing the government can do everything and believing the government can do nothing.

At least on NPR it is possible to hear both sides of many issues. I have heard everyone from Newt Gingrich to Pete Seeger interviewed on the station and I doubt that ever happens on the Rush Limbaugh show. In addition the call in shows like Diane Rehm or Talk of the Nation allow people of many persuasions to have their say. That said, I do not for one minute condone what was done to Juan Williams who was not “reporting news” but rather giving an opinion – to which he is allowed.
