Jan, the snake was already used. That’s why it’s wet and John isn’t cranking it. He pulled it out and they’re now trying the plunger. You can’t use a snake and a plunger at the exact same time.
Believe it or not, a kettle of boiling water and dish detergent work great to melt what’s plugging up your toilet. Doesn’t work so great on toys sent down there, tho.
They really shouldn’t be mad at Lizzie – after all, she’s only 2 years old. Maybe they should learn to keep the lid down at all times … but most importantly, they should provide a child that young with constant parental supervision. Leave them on their own to provide their own entertainment and this is the kind of thing you’re likely to get.
Did they pay Don Martin a royalty for the sound effects? I personally think Young Lizzie was one of the high points of the strip. I was never blessed with kids (gotta have a wife first). but I have five sisters and a couple of neices, and she NAILED the expressions and body language and behavior of toddler girls. Not nearly as much when April came along, since the older characters got so much screen time then.
One of the main problems with most of today’s young children (and some from various decades before) is the lack of actual supervision. We did not need car seats, helmets, pool fences and many other devices. My playground had plain hard dirt (and some grass), a very high slide of metal that was hot in summer, a “merry-go-round” that we had to push by running on one foot and much else that would not be allowed now. Still my accidents (and those of my 4 kids) were few and easily taken care of for the most part, until some teen ones.
howtheduck – toilet bowls and tanks once were separate – throughout my childhood at least.
I’m not sure you can supervise anything or anyone 24/7, but I do agree the seat should always be down. I got into the habit from having cats who won’t touch water unless it is someplace gross, and the toilet is a favorite.

Not sure where that snake is going. It’s certainly not in the bowl.

I love the “burp” the toilet gives…. been there with little ones. A friend’s tried (and almost succeeded!) flushing a bath towel down theirs…..

I think, with that snake, John is practicing on his dad for a job with TSA.
