Based upon that onomatopoeia in the final panel and Jack getting $50 to pose for an art class, I think the monkey’s going to the mechanic. No pizza dinner.
“Ka-Pow!” Either they just got shot at or Jack has a flat. Let’s hope he has a spare, or barring that AAA and that his cell phone battery is fully charged.
And I really, really hope Jack can resolve this “little problem” without Luann getting any broken bones this time around.
PS: Looks like Jack is driving a rather new Ford F-150. 50 points deducted from Huffle-Puff! ;)
Seems calamity follows these two. They are not meant to be. It is not in the stars. Or will they fight to overcome the bumps on their road to romance? Not sure if Jack is worth the effort.
They are on date, which they agreed to, he offered, she accepted. He has a nice, newish truck by the way; I bet he has more money than earning 50 bucks posing nude might indicate. Family money? Maybe he works and goes to school? Flat tire though on first real alone date? What adventures, or mishaps will ensue? Luann is such a klutz, so following that logic Jack is a keeper. Again—there I go again using the word bet—I bet he will be because there is far more to him than the jock stereotypes would indicate. Not a hint of Dirk either.
Jack would have liked to stay on the subject – approaching ground zero. But first the flat tire and next – when Jack begins to change the tire – it might start raining like hell. If he’s a lucky guy – Luann might wind up at his place with their clothes drying out…
@LUANN1212: I know I haven’t been reading as long as some of you posters, but I don’t see Luann as a klutz. She didn’t drop a bowling ball on her own foot; Jack did that. And she didn’t forget to check the tires on Jack’s car. If you’re talking about her adventure painting her room, that isn’t about being a klutz. It’s being a little nuts…
They will get out, Jack will get the spare out, and discover that he doesn’t have the tire iron/“Jack” handle in the truck. Just what could they use as a “Jack” handle in a pinch like this?
The spare is a temp which most people don’t keep up to pressure so it won’t be usable. When was the last time you checked the pressure in your spare tire?
They seem to have gone straight from Art class to their date with Luann still in her prim buttoned up blue outfit (we haven’t seen below her waist so maybe I’m wrong). Very un-Luann-like. She normally takes dates extremely seriously and spends hours getting ready. However she seldom acts as sexy as she looks. Pity.
Thank you: as a not native English I wasn’t able to understand this is the onomatopoeia for a flat tyre. Before reading the comments I thought it was the car stereo.
Heh. It’s interesting that Greg choose Jack’s mode of transportation as a pick-up instead of a car with a back seat, thereby eliminating any possibility that a “bad Jack” would suggest he and Lu climb in the back seat for a “little loving” while waiting for help to arrive. So far, Jack’s a good guy and my second favorite “Male” character in the Strip.
Oh. Someone here (And at Acramax) suggested that while Jack may not know how to change a flat, Luann might. THAT would be interesting, since Luann has never been depicted ever working on any car before. That same also person suggested the flat wasn’t Luann’s “fault” because it wasn’t “her” responsibility to check the condition of the tires before heading out on the road.
Well I hate to tell you this, but one could check the condition of old and brand new tires all day long before heading out on the road and still fall prey to “hazards of the road” such as nails, potholes, and pieces of metal.
What is Jack, maybe 19 years old, sitting naked in a room full of people? That means the thing he’s “kinda worried” about is either inevitable or impossible.
More random thoughts:So far (until just now, of course) Greg has lured us away from previous arcs. No one has mentioned a return to Tiffany nor the Al& Irma show.
None of our list makers of renown has attempted offering of euphemisms for a “dude’s” Flubba Dubba.
I take it Jack was concerned he’d make a huge mistake (misteak?).
For all the negatives this arc received at the start, it is rising to new heights of humor and fan interest.
Perhaps we can speculate the zentangle that Luann managed to sketch in class was her interpretation of a morning glory?
Perhaps, later in life, when Luann id married to (whomever) and returns to her tabe from the dance floor, he hubby will ask “Who was that guy you were dancing with so closely out there?” She will say “Oh? Just some guy I knew in college.” That could be the start of a whole new cartoon episode in Days of Luann’s Life. Or would it be Luann: The Sequel.
Oh well. Time to rise to the occasion and do something with this glorious morning. Ta, ta.
Generally an interesting comic today. A few thoughts I had in regards to the text:
1) Initially, I did not recognize what the sound phrases at the end were meant to signify. Ka Pow initially had me thinking of a gunshot. Flubba Dubba Dubba left me confused, so I thought perhaps the whole phrase may have been some sort of unpleasant music. I needed to read the comments to recognize that it was meant to signify a blown out tire.
2) Now in hindsight, the sound phrases make sense. But, perhaps because I was uncaffinated, I did not readily pick up on it. Perhaps if Greg had added some sort of motion lines or tilted the image in a way to suggest the tire had blown in addition to the sound phrases…. it may have helped me figure it out more easily. But, that is a minor point.
3) Jack’s truck is a rather newish model (looks like a Ford, perhaps the F-150). College students do tend to have newer vehicles these days, and Jack’s seems rather fancy. I wonder if it is suggestive of a pretty well-off family background? Back when I was TAKING classes, I initially had no vehicle, and then I had a rust bucket that was at the end of its lifespan and was 15+ years old.
4) Postulating on Jack’s “Dudes kinda worry that they’ll….” I would imagine the word choice he would be planning to end the sentence with would either be a) shrink, or b) grow…. either of which would be embarrassing to have happen while modeling.
5) I am noticing that Jack speaks with a lot of contractions. A lot of folks do. But it is noticeably abundant for him.
My F150 has a full size spare tire that is located under the bed. You have to be smart enough to insert the key in the back bumper to release the latch that lets it down. My thought is that Jack will have the jack collapse and LuAnn will have to save him. Whoever it was that mentioned Quill – this is the surest way to incur Kymmie’s wrath. I will admit that I think she was right a few years ago, Quill is gone, gone, gone….
I just took a look around and I AM WAY BEHIND THE TIMES in my knowledge of Ford Trucks. The model that Jack has was produced from 1995 – 2004, so that would make the truck more age appropriate for a young college student. It is at least 14 years old.
I am now beginning to assume I may have a similar deficit on a lot of vehicles. It used to be that I could see most cars and trucks and identify the year. I still can with a high degree of certainty for most vehicles from 1960 to perhaps the 1990s. I can identify every Volkswagen from 1949.
@REAL S. DOG: I’m afraid that the moderators aren’t very attentive anymore. I had asked for help awhile back when one poster attacked me personally, and nothing was done. It seems that most attention here is directed to continually changing features (such as introducing the ‘like’ feature, and, for some reason, having the comments scroll upward when someone posts).
This must be only one detail in a buildup to something else, because can it really be a storyline of “Jack blows a tire taking Luann to dinner casually?”
How did we get here? We have Lu attending a class where she oogles her naked kinda boyfriend. Who, btw, is a hopless dope from all appearances. This strip has kinda run off the road into the ditch IMHO
You seem to be calling me an “obvious harasser”. What is the problem, please? Yes, I can see that our screen names are similar. However, people do occasionally have similar screen names, and I am certainly not harassing anyone. I’m sorry if you don’t like my posts.

Where is the niceness in that?
